I guess due to ddr5 ram getting really expensive, lots of people are instead turning to am4 builds instead, driving up am4 component prices.

i guess that's true.. but strange i would of thought that the intel systems are better when sticking to ddr4… i5 12400, 12700 ext :)

You can get an X3D in theory for AM4 but you probably can't risk getting a 13th/14th gen unless you are using it until it dies. Resale value for affected parts will still be eroded because the buyer cannot really know for certain if it was purchased after the fixes.

@tekisei: 12400, 12700 are not 13th gen but are faster vs the 5600 and 5700X .. AM4 X3D chips are hard to get or overpriced

@vid_ghost: I picked up a 5500x3d for ~$180 in the last deal from AliExpress. I figure if I'm gonna be stuck on DDR4 for a few more years then I might as well buy the best AM4 cpu (for gaming) that I can get my hands on.

@Tehcookiemonsta: 5500x3d.. if only for the lower power draw while gaming alone.
but if using a Non X3D AM4 CPU.. i would go 12400 or 12700 because they start at 64w at least.

@vid_ghost: I was thinking mainly performance wise, didn't really think of power draw tbh.
i have a 8700k that needs upgrading.

@vid_ghost: 12400 is slower than a 5600 unless you're on ddr5, equal to a 5500 on ddr4 which is half the price currently. Tied with 5700x when on ddr5. No clue about 12700 but that's more costly. The 210 dollar 5500x3d while overpriced is still faster+cheaper than all of them.

@JerraJones: Bit confused as to how you are able to imply the 5500x3d is faster than all of them, based on that performence benchmark? It doesn't include any X3D cpu's to see a difference between the none X3D models

@Tehcookiemonsta: Gamersnexus has a video on the 5500x3d which shows it beating them in most games and that's with his 12th gen cpus being tested with ddr5. HUB themselves don't have any data on 5500x3d.

Personally I wouldn't spend anything on over $120 on an AM4 board but this whole ram situation has made the market very unstable….

Generally AM4 with DDR4 can do most of the tasks well without the need to pay tons for DDR5

I had a look through the user manual and looks like there's some shared band with on most of the PCIE slots FYI PCIE 3.0 x16_4 will run x1 mode when any of the PCIE 3.0 x16_2/3/5 slots is
occupied.
• M.2_2 shares bandwidth with SATA6G_56. When M.2_2 is populated, SATA6G_56
will be disabledStrange as i have a few 4 year old motherboards and they have two or three at least at 8x
https://dlcdnta.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/SocketAM4/PRIME_B550-PL…

The B550 chipset only has only 4x pcie lanes from the cpu.
These are shared across all slots(other than the main one), the 2nd m2 slot(pcie 3.0) and the sata ports 5 and 6.
The main pcie slot is the only one directly connected to the cpu and gives you the full x16 at pcie 4.0 lanes.
My board didn't have the disclaimer about SATA 5/6 being disabled when the second m.2 slot is populated.
When I added a second m.2 drive last year I was going crazy because I thought my SATA drives had died (I'm using all 6 ports).
Turns out they do mention it in the user manual, just not on the website listing.

That's a bit shit. Name and shame please

It's an Asus B550F Gaming Wi-FI. Listing here.
To be fair it's a great board and this was my really my only grip in over 5 years of using it.

I have this motherboard - lots of interesting info on the pcie lanes I never noticed before - I do have a few random/minor things plugged into the non-main PCIe slots I should see if unplugging any makes GPU go any better

Any recos on the best priced AM5 mobos atm please?

Sorry should have clarified, ATX size please. :)

With the price of ram AM4 B550 motherboard should be like $50 :) .. i paid like $139 with a bonus $40USD steam voucher for the top of the line MSI B550M MORTAR WIFI and MSI B550 Tomahawk boards 4 years ago. w
