I used this service when Medibank trialled it last year, unlike a couple of the usual suspect online med cert services (which provide a nurse practitioner rather than a GP) my med cert and prescription had the full name and provider number of the GP. They even had a good chat with me, which my in-person GP rarely has time for since their practice got bought by a big health conglomerate.

  • Not bad when you are in a rush.

Quality of doc seems better than bulk billing services.

  • Also has an auto-renewal feature for some medication scripts,2 of my 3 fall under it

I’ve had a couple of appointments through Blau with Bupa. I was happy with the first consult but the second time I felt the doctor was just doing it for the $$. He rushed me through everything. I haven’t tried them since as I’d prefer to pay for a caring GP who knows my history.
I might give them a try if I’m desperate or a hit short on cash!

    • Was the 2nd consult with the same doc? Was thinking of using this service to get my annual bloods done, but wanted to know if you see the same doc again to then through the results. Don’t wanna pay $$ just for that..

      • It was a different doctor. I think you can request the same doctor, but I’m not sure

For Blau/Doctors on Demand, I had two consults with the same doctors previously. Just need to match their work schedules (e.g. some only work weekends)

    • not so much money with Amplar but these services have strict KPIs and will want to wrap you up within 12-13min. they are not designed to address chronic/complex issues - more for urgent but not life threatening single issues when you can't get into your regular GP

  • I'm with bupa (…) how do I know if I am eligible, please?

    • Go to the website OP linked above, click "Book now" and enter in your Bupa membership details. It will tell you if you're eligible.

    • Very good article that, thanks for posting. Not sure why you'd pick that line for your link though. The AMA being primarily concerned for patients is a stretch. Are insurer-owned hospitals worse than others?

The line following that does reflect genuine concerns among health professionals though: "While that could be a win for some patient hip pockets, it might not be the best option for their treatment." There's no doubt some health professionals are concerned about the insurer "vertical health/preferred provider" model because it encourages unsustainable low fees, and leads to both over- and under- (poorer, time constrained) servicing.

No gap is a big incentive, and unfortunately there's no easy way for most patients to find out the quality of their doctors, specialists and allied health professionals except word of mouth and direct experience.

      • Once, insurers mainly had their own dental or optical service providers. Now insurers are increasingly expanding their reach into GP medical centres and telehealth providers.

The most recent foray by insurers into GP care has raised specific concerns that insurers may be creeping too close towards US-style managed care.

  • Wonder if they are GPs are doctors who are 2-3 years out of university?

    • You can read doctor's bio during the booking process. It sometimes includes their qualifications, such as MD/MBBS and FRACGP.

    • not possible to be a GP 2-3yrs out of uni - you're looking at a minimum of 5-6 years training post graduation

this is already available through 1800Medicare, previously known as After Hrs GP hotline # it's staffed by the same group (Amplar Health GPs)

    • that's a nurse?

      • nurse does the triage, refers to GP if required

  • have we all forgotten how to hold a phone up against our ear and talk on our mobiles? even ads now show people being hunts and talking loud on speaker!

No Schedule 8 or Schedule 4D drugs will be prescribed. Boo
