Haven't looked. I know it'll be down but I'm not touching it for another 10 years. Plenty of time for trump to die and the world to heal. Of course I'll be buying in the meantime but I can't say what as I haven't decided.

Yep, the game is very simple. Wait for shares to drop 40%, switch from balanced to 50% Australian & 50% International shares to ride the wave to a new all time high. Once there, switch back to balanced, rinse and repeat until you're filthy rich in retirement.

Good luck picking a single stock

ETFs will work better for most times

      • What is your strategy? If you are going to take the risky option of buying individual stocks, what exit conditions have you defined? Why would you sit back and watch something drop 40%? When did the alarm bells start ringing? Why did you ignore them? Have you set stop-losses for each stock you own? Do you actively monitor sector performance and trends? Why would you remain in Materials as the market turned its back, and Energy sector is so hot right now? I am baffled that you would sit in your chair and watch your portfolio get decimated in slow motion and do nothing about it? You know you can sell at any time, right?

        • selling no. i rather ride it out. its the board market, many small miners are down 50%

          • @Aerith-Waifu: If your investment strategy includes the flexibility to absorb 40% losses in 3 weeks, good luck to you. There are more efficient ways to make money from the market than "ride it out". In my opinion, "ride it out" is a good strategy when you are broadly invested such as through a whole-of-market ETF. If your investments are highly focussed in a single sector, and that sector is getting smashed, and other sectors are performing well, and you remain idle, this demonstrates pig-headed determination to suck at investing. It is not the "broad market" as you assert above, it is specific sectors. During the past month, there are sectors that have out-performed the market. In addition, you always have the option of parking your money in a high-yielding savings account, which right now, should return 5% with a bit of effort. TLDR, instead of being 40% down, you could have moved your investments into other sectors or into cash, and avoided the predicament that you find yourself in.

            • @ParkingFine23: Unless you’d have inside information, no way you’re going to guess the market. You’re selling below recent high, then missing the recovery. Sure fire way of minimising gains.
Riding it out is a far better strategy for most people.

Strange, relative to the all time high, the DOW/NASDAQ/ASX200 are only down 8%. This is just a little correction as it was heating up too much. How on Earth did OP lose 43% in shares? That's crazy. My super has returned 1% this FY instead of the typical 6.75% after 9 months so technically it's only down 6% from where it's meant to be.

OP felt they knew better than professional investors running super funds and went in heavily on individual stocks. Which is always interesting to me as this is motivated by greed & yet when they get a very volatile swing (as such portfolios have the tendency to swing violently so it COULD in theory recover) they feel seemingly unconformtable with this - which indicates it was never their true risk appetite. Thus is classic Dunning-Kruger Effect.

          Netanyahu? Cough cough.

          https://tinyurl.com/59vc78tb

Reza Pahlavi, a Western‑educated opposition figure and potential successor in Iran, is portrayed in some narratives as yet another “Mystery Babylon” patsy — like Mileikowsky — poised to assume the presidency and push regime change.

And Tim Osman… you all know who that is, right? Or am I just too deep down the rabbit hole?

See the pattern? There seems to be a lot of patsies trained by the U.S., or maybe agents working on behalf or associated with one of the three-letter alphabet agencies.

HoshYahu (הושיהו) – “YAHUAH saves” → Hoshaiah
NetanYahu (נתניהו) – “YAHUAH has given” → Benjamin Netanyahu

Benjamin Mileikowsky changed his last name to NetanYahu, most probably to fool the world he was given to the world by Yahuah or 'chosen'.

The true Messiah is YAHUsha, and NOT Jesus BTW. The one that said 'I come in my fathers name and you recieve me NOT'! (John 5:43)

Yahu = Yahuah = El Shaddai = The almighty father. FOREVER - Ex 3.15
          'Sha suffix = Yasha
YAHUSHA = The Son of Yahuah = The true Messiah. NO OTHER
          YAHUSHA literally means “YAHUAH saves”

Only post this here as I feel it is extremely relevant to those who believe in scripture/prophesy and want to iron out the lies and falsehoods they have inherited by tradition or false doctrines etc. etc. For those that don't believe or who are of different faith, please disregard. Not my intention to offend anyone, but if you are a bible believer, what I have just written above should really be edifying if you care to test with your measure (scripture).

And finally, the word 'Jew' |Yehudi| originally meant 'Judean', or someone from the tribe of Judea (one of the 12 tribes). It has now been changed to mean someone who practises 'Judaism', which is a form of 'organised religion'. No matter your opinion on this matter, this is another very important truth, because when you understand this you realise the bible calls the collection of believers 'Israelites', its not the land mass called 'Israel', its a collection of spiritual people, and scattered across the 4 corners of the Earth until He gathers them back to the land in the 2nd Exodus (Hasn't happened yet!) That is 'them' trying to convince 'us' that that is what the bible is saying, but it is definitely NOT. So even IF the current day Israel ARE the chosen people, they definitely DO NOT speak for the other 11 tribes of Yashar'el (Israel) (The name of His Kingdom also contains Yasha aswell as the suffix 'el, which means 'of Elohim/God'). If you are a grafted in believer, that makes you an Israelite also. He said there is NO JEWS NOR GREEKS/GENTILES. We are either a natural branch or grafted-in branch of the true vine.

Judaism follows the law of Moses/Rambam ben Maimon, and NOT the law of Moses of the bible. So when they say they follow the law (or more accurately the 'Torah'), they are talking about the Torah given down by Maimonides and other Rabbi's in the way of the Talmud, Torah, Mishnah, Midrash, Zohar etc etc. They are NOT lying, but NOT telling the full truth. It's a different Moses, with different laws, passed down orally and eventually written. If you think i am being some form of -etic, please refer to this video, made by believers of Judaism, who did the research and are shocked at the discovery. 35 mins at least should suffice if you find time…

I'm already on a domestic terrorist watchlist also for speaking truth BTW, so don't be concerned if what I said seems to be me 'speaking out of school' so something! 😅

Not here to hijack the thread but this is a really important issue that requires people be educated correctly in the truth in order to see through the lies. I am willing to take DM's on biblical truths and falsehoods like Churchianity if anyone actually cares at this. I'm not an oracle, nor do I know all the answers, but I have been blessed with wisdom and understanding in regards to scriptural accuracy in some capacity. Time is running out to repent guys!

Truth is like what sunlight is to vampires… 🧛

            • +1

@ForkSnorter: yes but MY flavour is different!

              • -1

@Jaspa7: Exactly - that’s a perfect analogy for belief systems or “flavors” of religion. The base recipe (scripture, law, prophecy, structure) is like your ice cream base: it sets the framework, the consistency, and the foundation. The flavors - personal interpretations, traditions, cultural practices - are added later. They each make the journey a bit different, but they should not change the underlying structure and integrity of scripture (which most denominations and faiths do).

                Basic Ice Cream Base Ingredients:
2 cups (480 ml) heavy cream
1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
                3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
                4 large egg yolks
                1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

So even if someone enjoys chocolate, strawberry, or pistachio, the base - cream, milk, sugar, eggs - is what holds it all together. Similarly, the Bible’s law, calendar, and prophetic structure are the base; the ways people interpret and practice it are the flavors. Some flavor may taste better to some than others, but the foundation should always remain the same. It doesn’t matter how palatable it may be - if you don’t follow the recipe, it is not going to be ice cream.

Almond “milk” isn’t really milk at all - it’s just a plant-based drink; real milk comes from animals.

Pufferfish tastes good if the correct guidelines are followed, otherwise the result is paralysis and/or death.

Take away what you wish, if anything? 😂💯

                • @ozsb: Yep, the ancients knew everything, and we don't know a thing.

That's the reason they produced so many different books claiming entirely different things about invisible, silent beings and people performing magic, and going to heaven after your brain dies, and yet were somehow silent about things like DNA, electromagnetism, relativity, quantum mechanics, microbes, antibiotics, germs, neurons, the immune system, enzymes, proteins, photosynthesis, cell-division, electrons, plate tectonics, carbon-dating, exoplanets, viruses, galaxies, black holes, radio-waves, nuclear fission, the speed of light, the cosmic microwave background, entropy, thermodynamics, gravitational waves, the expansion of the universe.

                  • @ForkSnorter: I'm all for people wanting to explore science, or whatever faith/religion they want to believe, my comments however serve to show the inconsistencies between what the biblical scriptures ACTUALLY say VS what people are practising, which, as defined by scripture, is the 'doctrines and traditions of men'.

I get it, it can be fully perceived that I as a bible believer, also am following doctrines and traditions of men. That would be something for me to reconcile in the future when new facts come to light.

Thats what repentance is. Adjusting your life so you DONT miss the target.

Metanoia and Teshuva are 2 different ideas.

this is what happens when you stock pick. You cant take the 'wins' from gambling on picks and not also be willing to take the larger losses when those gambles dont pay off
Eg none of the broad market ETF index funds for major markets would be down 43%

but as to your question on what am I doing
    Im going to:
    - Buy $x every week like I always do. This week just happens to be cheaper per unit than last
    - Pay minimal attention to my super that is essentially DCA'd anyway based on employee contributions and whatever interval I can be bothered converting from default high growth option into members choice index fund purchases.

        • I have a look at DHHF thank you

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Maybe you should look at more defensive/fund of funds ETF and not all growth since you're so deep in growth assets.

Also, stop listening to randoms on the internet like me and others and do some basic research.

            • @microsnot: Bingo.

OP either has a SMSF or direct assets via a SF (Choiceplus etc) - which should only be done if you know what you are doing. Now if he had no idea about something as incredibly well known as DHHF, I am saying there's a major problem with this decision making process as thats smoething they should and would have been very aware of IF they were well versed enough to be pimping out their super to an individual stock type level.

              • -1

@Daniel Plainview: Personally I don't know how OP could be down that much unless they put it all on black and didn't look at it for a period of time.
If you know what you are doing you can make much better money managing it yourself than in a fund, but most people don't have the time or interest.
I've averaged 14% pa since COVID with the exception of the last 12 months where I'm at 8.5%, playing individual shares, ETFs, riding the gold wave etc etc
I'm now 100% out and waiting for this war to hit bottom, whenever that is, then I'll likely sink some money into Qantas and Virgin and whatever else looks undervalued

If you're not in that position, stop stressing.

No idea still continue to DCA into my ETFs and superfund ill worry more when im closer to retirement in which ill probably change to a more defensive set up if you're over 60 i got no idea why you would be on growth at that age and if you are under 60 you got plenty of time

  • +2

    It’s ok I can’t afford to retire till 99

    • How much is the total value of your watches :P

Are you sure you'll reach 99? No diabetes, high blood pressure, etc? Good legs, no problem physically?

      • Grand parents both side hit at least late 90s

        No diabetes … yet
Blood pressure surprisingly fine according to gp
30 min decent exercise a day

Diet is out of control but 🤣

    • 2099 or 2199?

I invested in defence before Ukraine kicked off. That holding has been my MVP.

If we can post pictures insert "I did this sticker" of Trump.

Another day, another case of market manipulation

At the end of the day, TACO… Because he's a weak spineless pathetic bag of bones in a human suit

No poll option for an increase? God bless defined benefit. Might be a good time to convert to accumulation?

      • +4

        Google defined benefit.

      • It's basically a taxpayer subsidies pension/super scheme that (mainly) government workers got back in the day.

They quickly worked out that it was costing more to pay out than it was making so ditched it for the newer generation coming though… Just like the free University and all the other perks that generation got and we are still paying for.

We will only get what we put in ourselves, plus any returns minus the (increasing) tax on super now.

      • Micron. doubled since i bought in November.

        • Micron, doubled…

But it's so small you can barely see it.

      • Cash / fixed interest is still ticking along… slowly.

Went from high risk/return to balanced/indexed about 6 months ago when gold started going through the roof thinking something was up. The strengthening Aussie dollar also helped after getting out of international shares.

Extremely happy with its performance at the moment.

    • Smart move! Well done

      • I made over $150k profit on super trading gold, pmgold, etpmag, ooo since October.

    • Gold is not so good now?

      • +1

Yeah everything bar oil is not so good

    • Has balanced performed any better?

It seems like basically everything has gone down (except oil obviously) and property, but that's just due to property being so illiquid and there is a lag there.

      • -1

When you hedge your highs by changing out to a defensive one almost at its peak then yes, balanced and indexed will perform better in the downturn as they're less volatile.

        • Yeah I understand the theory, I was asking if it actually had performed better.

In the last 6 months through to Feb the high growth option had outperformed the balanced option at Australia's largest super fund, though things may have changed a bit in the last few weeks with this war.

I dunno if there is a way to access the up to the minute charts with super funds or not.

          • @Binchicken22: Yeah a lot has changed since Feb and i feel the Balanced will be coming out ahead now.

            • +1

@Drakesy: For how long though is the question?

Do you pile into high growth again after this war is settled? Or do you wait for the seemingly inevitable takeover of Taiwan and see how that plays out? Or do you wait to see how Ukraine/Russia plays out too? Or do you wait to see if USA ever does anything meaningful to address their massive nation debt burden?

There are a million factors that we haven't even thought about, that's what makes "timing the market" so hard and 9/10 people come out worse off in the long run than if they had of just held.

              • +4

@Binchicken22: Binchicken22 is 100% correct - timing the market is hard enough for professional traders. That home users think they can do it is nice but the vast majority of the time complete self delusion. Especially with Super where generally changing positions is NOT instantaneous and unit pricing is often opaque.

  • +1

This is why you regularly buy at set intervals and don't time the market, and also why something like ETFs work.

I'm down about 7% in total, which isn't too bad. 40%+ is insane though, you really need to re-evaluate what you've invested in.
