Fuel Costs. Can Airlines Charge More after You've Paid?

Just wondering if, say, Jetstar can increase the price of a flight you've booked and paid for a future flight.

You know, ongoing Iran conflict, fuel cost increases etc.

    Generally no.
And also airlines would lock in a a good portion of their cost price beforehand through financial hedging contracts So don't worry about them.

    • Thanks.

However, they can cancel the flight due to technical difficulties (lack of fuel).

They can cancel the entire flight if it is not profitable

    • they have to offer you some sort of alternative

"If Jetstar cancels your flight, you are entitled to a full refund or the option to be rebooked on the next available flight at no extra cost"

A refund when comparable flights are double or triple what you paid for yours isn’t really a great alternative

The bit you quoted isn't in the link

But regardless, sounds like the airline can just cancel and refund you

      • Just beware that if the jet fuel supply becomes uncertain, they'll cancel flights than to leave their aircraft stranded at remote locations or overseas. There might be no more direct flights to the destination.

I wouldn't want to be away from home for the next few months.

        • Thats another concern .. that theyll just cancel flights..

      • they have to offer you some sort of alternative

That alternative can be a BUS ride!

Haha, just checked, if they can't fulfil the flight, under their Conditions of Carriage they can still replace the flight with a bus trip as an alternative form of transport.

ROFL, I thought that with ACL, the terms "usually" & "third party" would have been required to be removed by now (the terms which allowed this in the first place).

Imagine booking with an airline expecting to get a flight to your destination but when they cancel it, they offer you a bus ride instead LOLOL.

If they offered you that, you'd just look at them in astonishment like they were bat shit crazy, wouldn't you?

    No /thread

  • Fuel Costs. Can Airlines Charge More after You've Paid?

    Yes.
They can charge more for tickets they haven't sold yet.

  • Jetstar can increase the price of a flight you've booked and paid for a future flight.

no, once you pay thats what you paid.
they will rort everyone who hasnt paid yet

    • Even though they have fuel hedged like they do currencies … anything for a quick buck

  • Short answer, depends on whatever the T&Cs are you signed up to when you bought the ticket…………

    • Wrong.

      • He's sort of not, ya know.

In this case, it probably hasn't happened, but if there is a clause included allowing this, it's quite possible.

It's how builders or off the plan guys can sign you up for $1 million but manage to increase the costs by the time you take possession. (For example).

It absolutely could be about what the terms were that you agreed to!

However, in a situation like this, as it would not be something that commonly happens or could be reasonably expected, they'd have to really make that term obvious/ not just burry it in with everything else, or I reckon it could be successfully challenged pretty easily.
