    Are we playing gamble here?

    • +25

      Arabian roulette

    • +2

If you are lucky, you might be able to see the meteor shower lighting up the sky during your flight there.

      • Front-row seats

    • +1

It’s obviously a gamble. But not an insane one.

All that needs to happen is Trump declares victory (almost certainly without actually achieving it) and says he’s going to stop bombing Iran. If that happens these flights will happen and you’ve saved thousands on your tickets.

If you book everything refundable and book towards the end of these deal dates it has potential to be a massive win.

      • +17

He has been declaring victory. So yes it is insane to gamble on a lunatic.

      • +3

Have you been reading the news? He did that already - Iran said it was fake news and now the Pentagon is ordering 3000 troops to the Middle East.
Unfortunately this isn't just like the tariffs where he can just TACO. It's up to Iran to open the Strait.

        • Iranian economy is undoubtly in shambles with the war, but because out of the goodness of their hearts, they will open the strait so the world's economy survive unscathed.

          /s

        • +1

They will open the straight when Trump declares "victory" and moves on to his next quagmire. Iran isn't blocking the strait and attacking their neighbours (which is the concern with this deal) because they want to, they're doing it as a counter to the US bombing them. They need the money from exporting their oil through it even more than the neighbouring countries.

If Trump decides he's bombed them enough then things will go back to normal relatively soon.

If Trump decides that 3000 troops is enough to invade a country of 93 million and this conflict drags on into May you'll get your money back… Not really a big deal

          • +3

            @stirlo:

They need the money from exporting their oil through it even more than the neighbouring countries.

The strait, where its deep enough for the tankers to cross, is all in Iranian waters. They can just let their own ones though, and block the rest.

You need a bigger carrot for them to play ball lol.

            • -1

@dyziplen: I'm not saying Iran will "play ball" with Trump. I'm saying Trump will give up and stop bombing them. He's going to realise that there's no way to "win" in a traditional sense so he'll pretend he won and there'll be a ceasefire.

Whether the strait opens and who it opens to is also irrelevant to air travel. All that needs to stop is bombs and missiles flying back and forward and flights will resume.

              • +2

@stirlo: You are forgetting that the other gulf states have US bases and are US aligned. Iran will not stop bombing them until they kick the Americans out completely, and that does not look like happening any time soon. Trump stopping his bombing will not magically open the straight to all shipping. Iran holds all the cards, and they are pissed. Have a look at their demands. No way this ends quickly.

                • +2

@dtpearson: Nah, Iran needs the money and support of the Gulf countries to rebuild. No way Iran continues a war against its neighbours targeting their cities and airports if the USA gives up.
Once again opening the strait to shipping has nothing to do with reopening middle eastern airports/airspace.

                  • @stirlo:

                    1. The rich gulf nations aren't allies with Iran so why would they help?
                    2. Why would Iran stop without extracting something out of this? Especially when they could be attacked again anytime?
                    3. Which dates of travel did you book?
            • -2

@dyziplen: Also you think the USA will just let Iranian tankers through to sell their oil?

Now that's the funniest thing I've read on the internet today!

          • @stirlo: I doubt it will be an issue. If American movies like Rambo are true, then 1 US soldier can take on 10,000 enemies. So the 3000 US troops will be more than enough to take over the country and subdue the enemy before its time to get popcorn.

Look out the window, for the "in-flight" entertainment.

      • "Flight of a lifetime"

      • "Return"

        • If they can find the body to repatriate it.

  • Added mass for deeper penetration.

  • I'm not expecting an immediate cessation of hostilities, but I think there could be a ceasefire as there doesn't appear to be any real provisions for a long conflict. A bit of a bet on purchasing tickets, but could really work out.

Edit: It might even work out paying a little bit extra for a ticket with more flexible cancelation/delay provisions. They are only a few hundred to a thousand more.

    • Why do people keep believing the US administration when they say this? No provisions for a long conflict on the American side, yes. But continuing the conflict drives the price of oil up, and Iran can keep letting its own ships through. Why would Iran stop their drone attacks? If you think they are defeated and want to stop, I have a bridge to sell you.

      • One word Midterms.

        • +3

          Iran doesn't have midterms…

          • @lovafo: But US does and if the Prez wants to avoid being a lame duck, he'll need to be looking for an out soon as Inflation killed the Dems in 24 and will likely do the same for the GOP if they don't anytime to stop it.

            • @Pcoder: It will be interesting how “no foreign wars” from Trump plays with his base. He seems determined to attack everyone with no long term goals in sight. Then again he is just doing what Netanyahu is directing him to.

    • +3

Trump have no plans, he is just there to pump and dump on the stock market.

At the end of the day, you can't bomb Iran into submission. Any ground invasion will be suicidal. Look at the build up prior to the Iraq wars, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 10k marines and 5k airbourne will just be driven into the sea. You need at least 10 times that at the minimum and look at the mountainous hellscape along the coast and upto Iraq.

Putin thought Ukraine would just have been a 3 day war. Trump thought he could pull off another Venezuela. Both are wrong.

what about the iranian commercial flight downed by US Navy?

      • Downed not, but one was damaged at the airport. I think that’s enough not to fly there…

    • US has shot down as many Iranian passenger planes as the Iranians have any passenger planes (both at 1). US has shot down more from other countries to boot though.

not just irgc, friendly fire as well

  • Side eyes this post. Just rescheduled to Cathay.

  • Very hard to get refund if they cancel flight.

    • pretty easy if you book via the airline directly

      • At COVID times we booked directly with the airline, but could not get refund. Flight was cancelled by the airline.

    • I looked at pricing directly with Etihad - for around extra 300 per leg you can book direct and have it refundable, with lounge and chauffeur. (on a sample MEL-AMS booking)

sadly I miss out on an actual booking I need by 1 day on the return, afterwards it jumps back up to 6k +

"While many airlines are scrapping flights with fuel rises/restrictions, Etihad seems to be wanting to fill more seats,"

    Nothing to do with that.

People are cancelling their bookings through the middle east due to the uncertainty and number of cancellations.

Having a ticket booked on a flight that doesn't fly is as useless as <choose your analogy>.

So now Etihad have excessive seats left in the near future, so are discounting as the only way to get some desperate cash flow while fuel prices rise. As others have said, all you're doing is paying for an expensive lottery for your own trip - that will need to have all other costs cancellable as you may not go (or will need to spend more for a last minute alternative),

    • Agreed with above however it’s a discounted lottery ticket given these seats are normally $8000-10000.

If you can book near the end of this period and avoid booking non refundable accomodation and activities and have flexible leave policies with work then this could be an amazing deal.

If the war in the Middle East is still going bad enough to affect air travel in June we’ll all have much bigger problems…

This war could literally end tomorrow if Trump claims a false “victory” and announces he’s going to stop bombing Iran.

  • We have flights mid year via Singapore and already copping changes. I have no faith we will have flights or at best nothing resembling what we booked by the time this comes around.

  • +3

This will go nicely with the strait of hormuz cruise I have planned.
