    Are these any good?

    • +17

Pretty good for tracking pet at home, so you know you don't blame the wrong one. I found it more useful during arguments.. "I didn't swear…" let's see the video - you did !

I got some C232s from a deal last year, and recently C120s. C120s have far better night vision/clarity. (Both with the night mode turned off because its sitting behind glass, so the infrared etc will just reflect and blind the camera)

The tracking is actually kinda annoying at times since it doesn't always return to the correct position, but its good to let people that they are being watched lol.

      • +1

So if I want a camera behind the window looking out into the street, C120 is the best Tapo camera to get?

        • +4

C120 is the cheapest that I have seen with the "starlight" sensor. Then they got the "full colour night vision" branding, its a bit hard to tell which one is better at the end.

But comparing C232 with C120, C120 is definitely way better.

C120 is a lot smaller and got a magnetic base, and uses a USB C port as well.

If you don't actually need the tracking, I would get the C120.

        • +2

I have the C110 and you can use it behind a window, but not at night. Once that red night-light sensor turns on it reflects off the window and you can't see a thing.

anyone looking at baby cams, baby monitors, this is all you need without paying baby tax.

Tapo app works great for motion/crying detection.
You can set up VLC to view the RTSP stream for 24/7 monitoring, or audio only with screen off.

Plenty of 3D printed attachments as well, handy for monitoring your 3d printer too.

    • +3

Does the RTSP stream to VLC still go through Tapo servers?

I don't know how I feel about sending in-room footage (of baby) out to Tapo's cloud.

      edit:
another downside with requiring Tapo is no internet = no monitoring. never know when those nbn outages may hit unfortunately.

Can always get the H500 hub to not worry about cloud storage

        • +1

Wow this is exactly what I need for my Tapo cameras. I have bunch of Tapo C200 overseas to monitor my old parents and each of the cameras has an SD card which was tampered in the past by the caregiver.

Do you know if I can use this hub to connect the overseas C200 through cloud without local network access? I’m in Sydney and can’t go to overseas now.

My camera view is pretty much just the baby cot.

Looks like any other baby in night vision.

I have a C210 and it allows you to setup local RTSP. It's in advanced options or something and you just set up the username and password and then the stream is available at rtsp://user:pass@ip:554/stream1

        • +2

I do this with my C216 too.

    • disagree, the c100, doesn't have a auto stream. so you need to keep on refreshign to view.

yeah you can setup a rtsp, but a lot of people wont.

    • +1

I use an old iphone with the tapo app open all the time with no issues.

      • +1

Wow I need to print this off now

      • +2

Looks nice, but somwhow Zaku fit perfect… lol

    • +2

I did this for a while but there's one big flaw - when you take it with you somewhere and it has to connect to a different WiFi network it takes about 5 minutes everytime. And then again when you get home which gets pretty annoying.

Some smart Ozbargain dude has a workaround by just taking his GL.Inet Beryl with him everywhere, but yeh, still one pretty big flaw for using as a baby monitor imo

    • Would you recommend any of the listed models in particular, for use as a baby monitor?

I will probably use with RTSP if that makes any difference.

      • I use C200/C210 as the pan and tilt comes handy

Just an FYI if you use Google Home, the integration for cams have been broken for like a year

    • +11

Safe to assume anything Google Home related is broken.

      • +3

I would like to add that that includes Google's own cameras. Constant errors, freezing, etc. For whatever reason, some of their cameras don't support 5GHz WiFi in Australia. I'm stuck with their ecosystem, but I wouldn't recommend it to others.

      • Google Home is so borked, basically not fit for purpose.

I used it for a couple of years to turn off the TV whenever the wife falls asleep lying on the remote control. It worked about 80% of the time. Some parts function some days, other days its the other way around, extremely unreliable.

Often I can control the volume on my Android TV without issue, but receive the error "Not available. Can't see Android TV on this network" when trying to access the Remote Control from exactly the same screen for the same device. The left hand doesn't talk to the right hand.

Google claim to be hiring only the best of the best minds but if I'm ever in a position to employ people, somebody who previously worked at Google would be crossed off the list immediately. I wouldn't want staff who believe that barely functional mediocrity is an acceptable product. It's embarrassing. They're the new Microsoft.

    • Broken in what sense?

"hey google, stream garage" works for me using google nest hub and google streamer, with C200 and C220 cameras.

  • Anyone had any experience use these as outdoor security camera? Been looking for a deal on outdoor security cameras but cannot find any.

    • I'm wondering about this as well…

      • I am using 3xSolar ones (TAPO-C410-KIT) and it is working fine. One of the solar cameras has stopped working and I got it replaced from OW. It is not the best out there but it works as it supposed to for its price and with solar panel.
I have got wired one since I can rotate it 360 (Tapo C520WS). It has been working fine with out any issue. Even though the person who was mounting it dropped it and broke its antenna but I glued it back and its working fine. Mind you, there is network cable attachment as well which is quite annoying as it is always hanging as extra bit. Photos don't show this.

I have got Tapo Door Bell, which works really well and gets connected quite well with Google Assistant as ringer. Battery life is pretty good, You can get at least 1 year on single charge, of course depending on your usage.

App is ok, easy to use but I dont like their Home and Away mode. You lose your default settings once you press Away mode, so you have setup Home, Away and Default modes.
Doesnt work with Google Assistant, I can see them listed in their but cant see any video.

    • +1

Some have used these under eaves with no issue.

      Cheap enough to replace.

      • I have a C210 at the front door under a bit of cover, so it doesn't get rained on. Just running an extension lead to it (clipped to the ceiling). Haven't had any issues since it was put there a year or 2 ago.

    • Dont i did and it worked for 6 months and died

    • If you mount it inside behind a window, it could work. I did this with the Eufy equivalent. Just don't angle it too much from the window as there will be internal reflections.
If you want night footage, best to get an outdoor camera. But for this price, you can try it and repurpose it if it doesn't look great.

  • annoying just bought some tapo devices last week too grrr

Also for travel, set up your wireless router to same SSID as home.

Then you don't need to go through the whole wifi connection process

Ive been running some c220s in the office, and they have been great, app is snappy too

  • Tapo H500 hub is on sale too $189 @ amazon . Seems like a good setup for internet down situations, may need alternate power source though for power outages, solar, powerbank, etc

Cool but not cheap. 1/2 price and I get one as a backup.

Wait … home assistance local should work without this?

    • silly question but is this a hub so then instead of buying sd cards for all your cameras, then it just saves it locally to this as it has 16GB? (expandable) which you would as i have my cameras recording 24x7 and have between 64GB and 128GB

  • Need C120 to be 1/2 price.

    • need C120 to be $0

      • Ehhh 😏

  • Frigate + these in RTSP mode would surely be a cheap, reasonably high quality home surveillance solution right? Am I missing something?

    • +1

Thats what i've been doing. been solid. Also have low quality stream

      • Nice

  • doesnt support tuya /smart life does it?

  • hamza from dhurender….is there a sequel coming.

  • Any memory card deal for c216?

    • any memory card deal period? the SD cards i bought from amazon 1-2 years ago the price of them is double/triple the price now bloody hell

  • The deal is pretty good now on their website https://au.store.tapo.com/pages/mar2026aut. I just bought the Tapo H110 Smart IR & IoT Hub and finished setting it up and using it a few days back. Very useful for centralize control from my phone
