Booked Hainan Airlines Economy $530 one way to London in May with 46kg checked luggage. 31 hour journey but the value is incredible, lets see how the service is.

    • What's on the menu?

      • +1

Very Chinese-centric menu and generally acceptable, but I would suggest packing your own snacks, eating at the airport, or just fasting for the journey.

      • +4

        Hainan chicken rice

    • Service is great! Friendly and helpful staff.

    • +1

      Hainan chicken rice included?

        Hainan chicken rice included?

        and fish

      • -1

        That’s a Singapore dish.

        • +4

Then it should be called Singapore chicken rice.

          • @RTX9090Ti: well that wouldnt be a great name for when it started being sold at hawker stalls.

It began as a dish made by Chinese immigrants from Hainan in Singapore, using a species of chicken from Hainan, I beleive.

        • That's weird because I ate this dish in Hainan where it originated from.

      According to this site:
      -Qatar Airways 1.5/5
      -Emirates 1.9/5
      -Cathay Pacific Airways 1.5/5
      -Etihad 1.5/5

        • +4

better rating than Emirates is good enough.

      • +2

LOL! Having flown Qatar, Emirates and Etihad more then 10 times each I can say that those ratings are utter BS! In fact all the best airlines have crappy ratings according to that site!

        • Of course airlines have crappy ratings, service is poor in comparison to other industries.
Honestly tho, there should be separate rating that is adjusted from the base rate to reflect the actual quality of service within their industry, rather than just comparing against literally everyone else.

          • +1

@FujinShu: The problem also is that if you feel like the service is bad you are much more likely to let your feelings be known, than if you had service as expected.

      • +3

        both qantas and virgin 1.5/5

      • +1

It's usually a case that people come to these websites to put in a complaint, so it's going to be heavily biased on the negative side as i'd imagine the bulk of people who didn't have any issues, just don't give feedback.

The thing i'd look is just a constant stream of issues, where the airline is clearly at fault. I'd suggest most of the issues on these websites can be where the passenger is slightly in the wrong (ie missed flight).

don't forget your portable fan…. Extremely hot and humid.

  • +2

Good, this time we have a real RETURN trip…

  • Being closer why isn't Shanghai cheaper?

    • probably higher airport tax? or just simply supply and demand pricing as a lot more people want to go to shanghai instead of beijing?

    • Likewise, Sydney is closer than Melbourne to the Chinese cities but it isn't cheaper.

    BNE isn’t included again…

I just went on JD480 Beijing Capital Airlines (Subsidiary of Hainan Airlines) business class - my 1 suggestion: Don't.

It was so bad, toilet out of service, old seats, flight attendants just turned off the lights right after food, closed the curtains and went to sleep lol.

I'm not saying Hainan direct is bad here, just a general review of a subsidiary.

    • +1

done the same with JD, outbound with their A330-300, the 2-2-2 config business class seats are absolutely terrible, however inbound flight was with their smaller A330-200, features same business class seat as non Aria Cathy pacific seat in 1-2-1 config and it was decent

  • very cheap price, same as economy during peak time travel but the long transfer time may be a turn off especially if you aren't able to sleep well

  • I don’t wanna go Shanghai I just want to go hainan but that’s actually more expensive even tho there’s a stopover at hainan on way to Shanghai.

  • Any direct flights for sale to shanghai

  • Flew this route last year a few days before Christmas. There were hardly any people on the plane. Almost everyone got an entire row to themselves.

Apparently this is a frequently reported experience. I would hesitate to pay extra for seat upgrades/business on this route lol.
