Epic spends about $20MM/year on the free game promotion. This was revealed when they sued Apple. It's a rounding error for their business.
The 1000 fired employees supposedly saves the company $500MM/year. (Company spend/employee is roughly double salary, so about US$250k/year salary for each of those 1000.)
In context, Fortnight alone makes revenue of up to $400MM/month. About $2MM-$3MM every single day.
The entire free game program is about 10 days worth of Fortnight. That's a really cheap ad to get people to engage with the Epic store.

I agree. Fantastic game, best game in a while and well worth playing.
I don’t know about it first-hand, but just as a matter of interest, the VR sequel is said to have some of the best melee combat mechanics of any VR game.
It's excellent, and I would recommend it, but it does feel a bit bare bones and repetitive compared to the campaign in the original.
