Was looking for e-readers to use for an upcoming holiday, seems like a decent deal for the Kobo Libra Colour.
Amazon price can be matched at JB Hi-Fi as they seem to have stock in-hand.

@0jay: Shipping crazy fast right now!
I've been using the "Choice" tagged items, they bundle everything together. 7-10days tops to WA.
@0jay: Mar 21, received yesterday, Sunday Mar 29.
They're still doing the 15 day thing or you get vouchers for every day it's late. I've never got a voucher.
Heck, when you're in WA it's quicker to order from China than the east coast via AusPost.

i don't doubt this.
i order from ali four or five times a year on average i guess, never wait more than ten days or so at the longest. this last time was stark.
ordered twice, diff vendors a day apart, early march. first arrived within seven days, the second was shipped, arrived at outgoing airport and hung there for 11 days. finally arrived in aus on friday still waiting for a new update.
both small packages less than 500g
@0jay: I put an order in last Thursday and it arrived in Sydney yesterday, just cleared customs this arvo.
Never seen this before, nice find.
On their website, the pic's feature it stuck to the back of a mobile. That's cool, why not just use the mobile as a reader?
E-ink is so much easier on your eyes
Fair call.
How does e-ink compare to OLED?
And how is it lit when in the dark?
@norkle: The Xteink 4 doesn’t have a backlight at all, so not very good for dark conditions.
I feel as though it puts much less strain on my eyes and I don’t feel anywhere near as fatigued reading 2+ hours on my e-readers compared to <1 hour on my phone, even on readers that do have a backlight.
what i like is the community are big and there are like 5 different custom o/s already on github well they are similar anyway its just a reader
I ordered 3 times on Aliexpress off 3 different sellers, all got cancelled.
reminds me of reading Lord of the Rings trilogy on my Palm Pilot V.
Just put a new battery in my palm m500. Worked great as my first eReader.
I got mine on Aliexpress for ~$75
Crosspoint is great.
I got KOReader sync working between it and my Kobo.
@theguyrules hey do you have the easiest step by steps on how to do the sync that with kobo? im noob but installing crosspoint i can no problem thanks
I had to install KOReader on my Kobo (using NickelMenu)
I already had NickelMenu set up but not KOReader and KOReader has its learning curve.
But once you set it up, making a KOReader Sync account and setting it on both isn't too hard.
It's really getting used to reading in KOReader that is the hardest.
Not really comparable to a colour reader though is it?
there is used black for 304 quick get it
oh OW is better, new for 306
I'm seeing 378.
price beat bro
Eyeing the Clara BW but seems to never go down in price.
For something as basic as an ereader technology wise i do not get how they can charge so much for them.
On digidirect it's 212.46. I think the lowest I've seen was around 200.
edit: sorry, it might not be in stock.
Black is currently $269 on Digidirect, but says 'awaiting stock'.
mini review Have had this reader since day 1, Would probably not get again thought its not that bad I would get rid of it.
If you primarily read ebooks, the colour eink isn't as hi def as B&W eink, really notice the difference side by side with my gf's Kindle. Its still legible, just not as good
I thought I could read PDFs and then use the pen but the screen is too small for that. I really like the physical buttons for page turns, however the downside is the reader is now too big to pocket (wide) compared to my older Kindle which did pocket in cargo pants type pockets.
I do use the embedded elibary App to borrow books from the local library but 1/2 the time don't finish them in time before they are gone. I mostly used DRM stripped books via Calibre directly (USB) and have mostly given up on reading PDFs. I don't read comics so can't comment on that aspect
Annoyances: It has gotten better but it rarely went back to the same page when I reopened it, it still does that but only 1 in 10 times now not 1 in 3. If you have a cover and it's closed there's no visible LED to show you the charge state when you plug it in to charge, Kindle has orange for charging and green charged, so you can visually see WTF is the SOC. The power button is on the back, so if you had the cover turned back and put it down and it goes to sleep, you had to close the cover and reopen it, or move the cover aside and fumble for the power button. They have fixed that with a firmware upgrade by allowing the page turn button to be a "start me up" button. It gets regular updates, I had one the other day but I only turn the WiF on once a month or so to specifically check (preserve battery life) It's battery life is less then stellar. It does have USB C :)
Quietly dubious about people who complain about reading legibility when it's superior to a real book…
the BW though in multiple tests has been proven to be better for reading straight up over the colour version.
Yes the influencers are very strong with this. Analogue books, newspapers and magazines are a miserable reading experience from all reports. Borderline unreadable without precision digital clarity.
ok.. but then i wasn't comparing it to a real book, so i think that's called a strawman.
Compared to the Kindle it's not as legible.
They're equally as legible. I'm not sure you understand the word. As someone who has both a Kindle and Kobo I'm reasonably confident your motives are impure, and you're just another tedious brand pony pushing your device.
Thanks for the write up.
I'm interested in using 3rd party apps, like KOReader. Installation of KOReader on Kobo devices apparently doesn't require jailbreaking, whereas on Kindle it does. Later versions of Kindle software and hardware have the jailbreak methods patched out. Perhaps I should just get a regular black and white Kobo.
You can disable the color if you are really desperate. I personally don't find it a problem compared to old black and white models.
yep same i thought color is cool but i think again, most books are bw and if i want to read my colour tintin comic pdf on it, they would be too small for the screen (my eyes are old).
odd question, are medical or engineering texts readable using this?
Check reviews on the colour e-ink displays, they are not good. Unless you REALLY need/want the colour for comics or manga or something, the b/w tech gives much better contrast and a whiter white for half the price.
i've had one for 6 months now, love it. The colour really adds a 'pop' to magazines etc. though i do agree, it's a little too small to do those ccomfortably. RE the stuff about legibility, it IS slightly less sharp than other 7" non colour readers, BUT, it's about the same as my older Kobo Glo, I'm happy either way.
I do love the speed / responsiveness of magazines / PDF's however, they zip around nicely.
Skip the stylus unless you plan on taking notes, it's an expensive novelty.
Get a flip cover, most of them have magnets that will put the device to sleep when closed.
i just bought xteink x4, like it. so small
