  • LOL this company must be burning through so much money.

    • Same, I don't understand the logic here. I've had 12 supermarket cards in the past on identical deals, so saved $240.
They are paying Stripe fees to process my payment.
Maybe they are earning fees when I spend at the store, but this will be far less than what they are paying Stripe.
      How do they make money?

    • They are building a defence moat. Comes October Visa and MC won't have any CC surcharge but Amex will. Guess what happens then ☺️

      • amex still allowed to have surchage?

        • @prankster Yes. Amex still allowed to have surcharge.

        • Visa/Mastercard everyone is allowed to charge surcharges - it will just be added to the price of an item. This is just government making sure, bank cards are widely used - people will not use cash… Banks will be richer

    • Is AmEx still relevant? The world is De-us$ (expensive fuel & better value EVs ;) 🪃💥

  • Thanks OP, got it on the Velocity card.

Previously always bought Supermarket Slayer but the Aussie Explorer fuel card is a great suggestion just before the Easter road-trip. Anyone know how widely accepted it is?

    • I've used it at most of the majors. Will probably be getting another one off this deal too.

      • More painful with the small residual balances compared to supermarket self serve?

        • Not in my experience. I've had no issues using the remaining balances at 7-Eleven, Shell Reddy Express and EG Ampol outlets. That's not to say others won't; I've just never tried to split a payment at them.

          • @daanish: 7/11 allow paying by 2 cards max. so you can split once.

            • @bashar20: Hmm. I don't often need to split more than once. Usually I finish off a card and then the second card will cover the balance.

            • @bashar20: Depends on the outlet - one of them only let me split one card and cash after telling me otherwise.

        • if you only have, for eg, 31.87 left or some random number just squeeze the petrol nozzle slowly at 31.50 and I'm sure you can get within a few cents less than 31.85

          • @cloudy: And then you've got to work out the fuel lock or 6c discount?

  • Looking to get and use to make a larger Jb Hi-Fi purchase. Anyone know if the tech head can be used to buy jb hifi gift card?

    • JB is on the List for Techhead. I would note that there other regular offers for 10% off JB cards thru other regular offers.

More value in using this offer where you cant often get 10% off/back for fuel and supermarket (usually around 6% max). And you have previously (and still likely too) been able to use the supermarket slayer to buy discounted gift cards at Coles/Woolies, eg stacked % off/back

      • That’s a good idea, thanks!

    • Get the Supermarket slayer, add it to your digital wallet, and then you can use it to tap and pay for gift cards when they're on discount (either 10% off or they will be 2000 points for $100 spend etc). You'll see deals posted here or on freepoints.com.au

    • Got $0.17 left on techhead. Can these be used at woolies/coles split payment or only the supermarket slayer are accepted there?

  • Got it on Velocity Escape but not Qantas Discovery. Time for another Aussie Explorer to mitigate the fuel price increases.

  • Sucks they got rid of spending on Amazon. Anyway to convert this to Netflix?

    • Buy Supermarket Slayer and get the Netflix card from Colesworth.

  • Nice. Got them again this time.

  • Anyone have an idea if the "Supermarket Slayer" card can be used to buy gift cards from Coles/Woolies?

    • Yes

    • The POS just treats it as a tap and pay debit card rather than as a gift card, so you can bypass the restriction where you can't buy a gift card with a gift card.

      • Just checking, this would only work buying in-store gift cards, not online e-gift cards, right?

  • Thanks for sharing — this is one of the better Amex deals around.

Just checked my history and I saved $80 on the same offer last year, so looks like it’s a repeat deal.

Also worth noting NAB and CBA run similar promos from time to time as well.

  • I’ve had trouble verifying these gift cards on my iPhone which has only started being an issue this year. Anyone found a workaround? I asked the gift card issuer and they just said it’s an issue on Apple’s end and then cancel and refund my purchase.

    • I just had the same issue with Google wallet today at Coles. Not looking good!

    • No issues setting it up on an iPhone earlier today. I did run into issues in the past, turns out there is a limit on how many cards you can have linked to your apple wallet. Try removing a couple of cards, and try again.

    • On and off issue for me going on more than a year. I have a spare android phone so if it doesn’t work on my iPhone it usually does on the android.

If you call Special they don’t help. Just cancel the card and you don’t get $20 Amex credit.

    • Might be time to upgrade your phone

  • Got it on my explorer primary card but not supp. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks op got it on my card.

  • Thanks, got it on my end.

  • Thanks op got it on my card.

  • Hooray. Was targeted for this.

  • Has anyone tried stacking with Spend $50 or more, get $10 back?

    • Can confirm it worked for me. $30 back in total for a $200 spend.

  • Sorry if this has already been answered but is there no way to convert to amazon credit? Colesworth don't sell amazon gift cards anymore and I don't think. techhead works with amazon anymore

    • Nope.

    • since big w doesn't sell amazon gift card anymore.

  • I got it again!, it's great considering I have the $0 annual fee Essentials Card.

Who funds these promotions?, is it the actual business or Amex trying to drive card usage at the specific retailer/business for agreeing to accept Amex etc?

    • People like me who pay $450 annual fee for the card

  • Thanks, another supermarket slayer card for me!

  • tried to purchase ultimate gift cards at woolies with the supermarket slayer but it was getting declined today :(

    • Thanks for reporting- hopefully just a temporary glitch; or just a limit imposed as it happened with Category Choice Groceries GC a while back.

    • Maybe Special decided to do you a solid. Try again tomorrow - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/954713

    • @Lemoo
      any update?

  • Bought a $200 Supermarket Slayer this afternoon and used it straight away at Coles to grab Apple gift cards on this deal. Worked perfectly.

  • Bought $200 supermarket slayer giftcard. Tried to use it at Coles to buy 4 x Netflix Gift cards.

The eftpos machine declined to accept it.

  • I have problem to use the Supermarket Slayer gc on Google Wallet for the last three I bought, there were no problem to add them to google wallet, but when I tried to use it at either Aldi, W and C, both are not valid. But after I added them to Apple Pay, no problem at all.

    • Had no problem using my 1st card at couple of Aldi stores in the past. But got declined at 1 Aldi on both my 2nd and 3rd cards with Error 05.
I will try either Coles or Wollies next time when I shop there.

      According to ChatGPT:

Aldi terminals are stricter and faster
they reject anything slightly “off” in authorisation

      So:

card might still work at IGA or Woolworths first

      • Update: used one (got declined 3 times at Aldi earlier today) at IGA, accepted without any issue

  • There is another problem of using the Supermarket Slayer, one day SS gc tap was declined by Coles checkout machine, that day, I tried CIMET GCs (from AGL deal) they were declined too, only normal CC was accepted on that occasion. No problem of using those gc after that incident.

However, one of the declined SS gc transaction amount was not credited back to the gc balance, that day, 4 transactions from different GCs were declined, only one transaction from SS gc was not credited back. The transactions listed under the Special GC app didn't show that transaction at all, normally it would should all transactions included the declined ones, but the balance is short of the declined tx amount after all other transaction amounts added up.

So be careful to check the balance of those GCs to make sure that you are not getting short change.

    • I just had the same issue with the card I bought back in Feb.
So it seems to be an issue with Special Gift Cards….

  • I use these cards to shop at Aldi as they don't accept AMEX

  • If I purchased the Supermarket Slayer card, will I be able to top up my Opal at Coles? My assumption was yes, but thought I'd check :)

    • Curious if you tried this out - did it work?

      • Yep! Confirming it worked :)

  • Anyone know how to remove the used gift cards in Special app - or web?

    • Not that I know, but there should be! Takes a while to cycle thru them to see the active ones, doesnt it!

      • There's none.

  • Can you buy Amazon gift cards using Supermarket slayer at Coles, Woolworths?

    • You can if:

      • The supermarket lets you do that. Special gift cards are prepaid Mastercard gift cards that can be loaded onto Apple Pay and Google Wallet, so you redeem them the same way as you would redeem a regular Mastercard. The checkouts at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI (as examples) should let you use a Special gift card to pay for a gift card, but if a staff member notices what you are trying to do, they may stop you.

      • The supermarket you go to sells Amazon gift cards. Physical Amazon gift cards were withdrawn from sale from brick and mortar retailers (e.g. Coles, ALDI, BIG W, Shell Reddy Express, Ampol Foodary) in late 2025, so I would be extremely surprised if a supermarket still sold them today.1

      1. As an aside, digital Amazon gift cards have also been withdrawn from sale from multiple digital gift card platforms as well (e.g. giftcards.com.au, Macquarie Marketplace), so it looks like Amazon is massively scaling back their gift card program in Australia.

      • Thank you for your detailed reply

  • Thanks, picked up another supermarket slayer

  • I can't complete checkout with an amex? Keep getting an error this card is not supported? Tf?

  • i've been trying for days to buy this but payment keeps getting declined - across mutiple browsers, spoke to amex support who say its not them doing it, they've had no declined attempts on my card. wrote to specxial customer supprt - on their website it says they are open weekends but the email reply says not till monday so will miss the deadline..

  • Ordered $200 supermarket GC last night.

Got an email today saying it's been cancelled (no reason given).

    • the gift card itself had been cancelled? did you get a refund?

      • Yep.
