  • Whenever Oats are on sale at my local Coles, they get absolutely cleaned out

    • Yeah I was surprised that people still have plain oats as just noticed that the other day too. The only ones I have are the prepacked mini packets as they just seem a lot easier.

      • +9

Those prepackaged porridge sachets are filled with sugar and flavor.

        • +2

Oats certainly aren't filled with either.

  • +5

What makes this worth almost double (or triple when not on sale) the price compared to Coles brand oats?

    • +1

Try them side by side and find out.

      • I've tried both and honestly can't tell the difference. They're both Australian oats, what else am I missing?

The Coles variety are even rated higher overall according to Canstar Blue.

        • I eat my oats raw, just mixed with cereal or banana to make a kind of raw muesli.

Uncle Tobys traditional (whole oats) can be eaten immediately after adding milk. The Coles ones need to be soaked overnight, otherwise they are hard and taste fairly indigestible.

Not sure if there is any difference for porridge though. I heard someone mention the Uncle Tobys ones are a bit creamier. But I guess if you're adding milk, that would add creaminess.

          • @ForkSnorter: That's fair. I guess if that is worth it to you then carry on.

I use oats mainly for making granola, so it doesn't really matter how hard they are as they get baked anyway.

          • @ForkSnorter: That suggests to me that the Toby oats have been more processed than the Coles brand.

You may as well buy the Coles branded quickoats if you are in the non-porridge usage but not 'raw oats' twin sets.

            Whaaaat?

        • +4

I use quick oats to make porridge. The Uncle Tobys ones are milled finer and have fewer rogue husks.

    • +6

I was long of the mindset that oats were oats.

I started eating overnight oats last year and the difference between Uncle Tobys and generic supermarket brands is like night and day. I'll spend the extra couple of dollars every time now.

      • +1

You've only peaked my curiosity. What makes them different? Is it the processing? If so, wouldn't just blending any oats achieve the same result?

        • +1

I assume it is something to do with how thorough the processing to remove the husk is.
They are simply softer and lighter than the generic brands. Overnight oats with Uncle Tobys become really creamy. I highly recommend grabbing a box and giving it a go!

        • +1

Try it to believe it. I cook my oats using a microwave and uncle Toby's ends up creamier than supermarket home brands

        • +3

          piqued?

      • Just use quick oats and save dollars?

  • -3

I have been told by the doctor that this causes gut issues

    • Probably depends on the person. You should probably drink water after eating oats, because they continue to soak up fluids.

      • If you soak up overnight with plenty of fluids it's better for you

    • Can't see this causing more issues on my stomach than high-in-gluten Weetbix

  • I usually buy coles brand oats $3.50 for 1.8kg for use in a morning smoothie.

  • For people raving about the quality difference between regular Coles/ Woolworths oats and Uncle Toby's.

Please try the Red Tractor Creamy style oats atleast once. They are absolutely top tier which will blow uncle Toby's out of the park or whatever.
I could never get myself to eat the horrible sludge that is called porridge until I tried Red Tractor brand. Now this is what porridge should taste and feel like. It's absolutely delicious.

    • Tried them already. Same as Coles own brand, no matter how you prep them.

      • no matter how you prep them.

        What ways did you try?

        • +1

Slow pan heat, slow microwave heat, with both soy and full-cream milk. Overnight soak in soy, milk, yoghurt. Results virtually identical between Red Tractor and Coles own. In a good way…I luv me oats!

What's happened to "Apple Cinnamon" - is it OOS or they changed it to Apple Brown Sugar?

    • Looks like Woolies still stock Apple & Cinnamon. They're Out of Stock on Amazon, I think.

Coles sell both Apple & Brown Sugar, and Cinnamon Scroll varieties. You could mix them together!
