Shame they are forcing you to use extra usage and not just using your sub towards connected apps.

"One note: as of April 4, third-party harnesses like OpenClaw connected to your Claude account now draw from extra usage instead of from your subscription. If you don't use them, nothing changes. If you do, the credit and bundles above have you covered."

    • -2

Yeah this was enough for me to cancel Claude

    • +4

Fair enough OpenClaw is unhinged and is a waste of resources

Less demand on Anthropic is better UX for subscribers

  • +12

I'm just here for the leaks.

  • +24

This is the actual basis for this credit and it's pretty freaking awful…

Starting tomorrow at 12pm PT, Claude subscriptions will no longer cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw.

You can still use these tools with your Claude login via extra usage bundles (now available at a discount), or with a Claude API key.

We’ve been working hard to meet the increase in demand for Claude, and our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools. Capacity is a resource we manage thoughtfully and we are prioritizing our customers using our products and API.

Subscribers get a one-time credit equal to your monthly plan cost. If you need more, you can now buy discounted usage bundles. To request a full refund, look for a link in your email tomorrow.

https://support.claude.com/en/articles/13189465-logging-in-t… [just fyi this link does not explain how to get a refund]

We want to be intentional in managing our growth to continue to serve our customers sustainably long-term. This change is a step toward that.

I'm of two minds about this credit being an OzBargain. Yes, it's important existing subscribers know that they have a credit and are being ripped off. No, this is not a deal, it's a company reducing their offering to consumers and trying to pass it off as a deal. Like MobileMe, which replaced free mac.com addresses with a paid service. Steve Jobs famously didn't get an applause for that one and, similarly, Dario Amodei is going to get a downvote from me for this one. At least until this "deal"s description is tidied up.

How is this awful? Less Openclaw the better. Anthropic already subsidises the compute cost of Claude on their plans, and things such as Openclaw are kind of abusing this.

The Chinese models are far cheaper anyway.

      • -4

True. I must concede that. I have to defer to the Bart Simpson line here…"[it's] horrible…in principle".

    • +11

If you didn’t know this was coming you have rocks in your head, the usage from open claw was insane, it was not sustainable as a business for them. I think you will find ChatGPT/codex oauth will also follow soon

      • -6

nah OpenAI bought all the compute they could ASAP while Anthropic was laughing at them, now Anthropic is compute poor and whos laughing now. Plus OpenAI and OpenClaw are together

        • +2

They aren’t compute poor they are focusing their resources on tasks and things that matter.

      • +1

Possibly but if this is purely an environmental/non-Claw user benefit thing like Sora's shutdown…they've done an awful job of communicating it that way…and then the problem becomes not the OpenClaw bit but the third-party tools bit.

      • chatgpt is so behind thats their selling point now, unlimited openclaw usage

    • +4

Get a refund then if you're not happy.

      • -1

Good luck. I tried, their support service bot says you can… but you can't

My CC provider was not able to process the reversal.

    • +3

It's funny when people taking the piss get outraged that their loophole gets closed

      • +6

To clarify, the use of automated third-party tools meant that people were getting many, many multiples usage than what they were paying for. We're talking hundreds - thousands of dollars worth of token use for $25 - $200 per month. And of course the users knew it.

It's the same as when Spotify and Netflix shut down the use of using Turkey based subscriptions. We all knew it was coming, but were enjoying the ride while we could

    • In other words they were hoping people would subscribe but not use it, then forget…

  • +2

Was considering subbing to claude code but decided to hold back after seeing people complaining about service issues and usage allowance draining quickly. Got a free month trial for codex instead. WIll try CC once they get their shit together which they appear to be remediating.

    • +2

      Codex got nerfed too unfortunately
      Same with Antigravity

GLM sub is my favourite atm
Matches well with cline or kilo code

      • Just looked up GLM, haven't heard of z.ai until now. The 3x claude usage is definitely an attractive proposition. How's it compare to Claude? I'm yet to fully jump into AI coding but some said codex requires more precise prompt spoon feeding to get the results you want whereas Claude gives you what you want.

        • +1

Quality slightly below sonnet but gets the job done
          5.1 is pretty good

Claude usage limits are the main problem (absolutely burns through limits making it hard to finish things on your schedule)

GLM seems more like 10-15x usage

          • @thirtysixd: Are you /clear and /compact frequently?

My /usage is 16million tokens in 2 weeks on $20 pro sub. Even with caching thats more then my $20 worth.

/Plan when required and don't hammer Opus Max effort for easy shit.

Opus max to plan, (currently using gskill from gary tan), write plan for sonnet high to inspect and implement.

Idk minimax, GLM it feels like I'm hand holding more or redoing things which is my time vs CC which is, just press go.

      • What are everyone's preferred subscriptions for CLI?
The best deals seem to be Minimax and the new Xiaomi plan which are actually transparent with rate limits. Qwen used to have a good coding plan but they got rid of it.
Others like Kimi and GLM seem to be intentionally opaque similar to Codex and Claude.

Will be especially important given that opencode and Claude Code forks from source leak are token hungry af.

    • Fireship video on Claude code leaks some of the background process and why the drain happens. Check out out !

  • +2

They had a token exhaustion issue for about a week with near zero comms about it apart from a two brief comments along the lines of "still looking into it".

There is still no transparency regarding what you get from their offering. The sad fact of the matter is AI still doesn't make economic business sense, so apart from a blip here and there is favour of the users, the trip down the road to ensh*tification will be long and constant.

    • Was pretty crap /resume was losing context or adding context and they were radio silent

The usage metrics are a big black hole, you can always pay via api if you're unhappy, you'll just have to setup caching etc for your workflows which can be a lot of time… Can always use a $20 sub to set them up as well :)

  • what have you guys build?

    • +5

Build? Who's got time for building when there's complaining to do!

    • An ultra optimised system TO build. That's what it's all about

  • Still don't know why anthropic booted me of Claude.

  • -3

Guys got to add some input, if you think your gunna use these credits productively think again. Your gunna need to spend like $300-$500 per month and thats just a months subscription on Perplexity Max for example haven't really tried claude.

    • +1

      my gunna?

  • +2

Tip: Claude now uses tool sets for researching that rip through tokens - tell Claude-code to limit research to conserve tokens and do your own research on Grok, Gemini, etc. - then copy your findings/methods/reports to Claude-code - then it will use a LOT less tokens if it's just doing your coding.

    • Do let opus read the web, thats the problem. Convert your findings into . MD to feed the models, e.g. docs folder.

or hookup firecrawl mcp in a vm thats set as a skill for claude

  • -1

Not really a deal when they're trying to make up for this - https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1s7zgj0/investiga…. I removed my subscription after it blew out and I couldn't use it anymore on Pro. I got the email for the credit, but the link didn't work. They're all over the place at the moment. Hopefully they can sort it out and I can jump back in again later.

  • +1

Anyone know whether it's better to get 2 pro subscriptions or buy extra usage when I use more than a normal pro subscription but not enough for a max subscription? Also I'm looking at getting something that can rebuild my website which is an outdated wordpress themed one. Is there a better AI than claude code for this?

  • +1

This long weekend I spent time migrating from ChatGPT to Claude in all the time using ChatGPT I never hit a limit. I am on the Pro Claude plan and already have hit my limit and used these additional $31 add on credits.

  • Anyone got that refund request link they're talking about?

  • I just met a friend that mentioned about this and he uses Claude Pro. While it's public holiday since Good Friday to Monday, he already hit the limit in 2 days … Only designed a website with Claude help. He is waiting until next Wednesday to be able to use Claude again …

I haven't tried Claude and only use Gemini AI Pro that I got for free 1 year from Pixel 10 Pro purchase during JB Hi-fi pre-order (cancelled the plan). I got free upgrade to 5 TB from Gemini AI Pro too :)

I don't think I'll ever want to pay for AI. Maybe I need to get a new Pixel phone every year (maybe through JB Hi-fi pre-order and cancel the plan for cheapest cost) to extend free Gemini AI Pro :P and use trade-in for existing Pixel phone.

  • Weird I had $94 credited then Anthropic reduced it for $31, must have been an expiry

  • +1

I have a ChatGPT plus plan ($30/mth), and recently started using Claude free version. For my case scenario - content writing, general use, it has been pretty good! I like that it gives better solutions to my queries, wherein ChatGPT just goes on and on lol!

One issue with Claude is that the free limit gets used up pretty quick. For example - sending 5-8 phone screen shots to review social media content analysis will limit out and it will ask to upgrade!

Wondering if there is a way to get the Pro version cheaper than $34/month?
