the ultra model is objectively much more than just a smartwatch

      • -2

Does it was the dishes and feed the dog? For this price I'd want it to also clean the car. You have to have rocks in your head or be extremely insecure to pay this much for a "smart watch"

    • +21

You don’t wanna know how much a Rolex watch is

      • +2

        And it has limited functionality.

        • +2

Never gets outdated though. Unlike this watch.

      • +4

How much will this apple watch be worth in 5-10 years.

How much will the Rolex be worth in 5-10 years

        • +14

Do you buy apple watch for resale lol?

        • +3

not every rolex appreciate in value lol. the one that appreciate in value you wont be able to buy them at RRP lol

        • +2

What functionality will both have in 5-10 years? What functionality will the latest versions of both have by then? Rolex’s are basically attractive jewellery that tells the time. Apple Watches are mini computers you wear on your wrist. If you only want to tell the time then get a Rolex, if you want something with more functionality than that buy a smart watch. Both are valid options for what they deliver.

          • @try2bhelpful: No one buys Rolex to tell time lol.

          • @try2bhelpful: Ironically, in five years, Apple Watch will be ewaste but Rolex will still tell time.

            • @Ghaowudjy: And that is all the Rolex will do. Most of my Apple products have lasted much longer than five years. If you add on a battery change then the Apple Watch could still be working in five years and still have way more functionality than the Rolex. Rolex’s are just time telling jewellery.

              • @try2bhelpful: 10 years? In 15? More functionality, definitely. Longevity, it doesn’t even come considering Rolex or most analog watches last decades without much maintenance.

                • @Ghaowudjy: So you keep extending out the time, hilarious. With all my Apple products, over 20 years worth, I’ve only had one that has actually died and it was the Apple iphone 6 Plus. With most of them even the batteries are still working. Even a Rolex can die in the end, as my friend has just found out. They are also very expensive to get repaired if they do die.

However, you are comparing apples with oranges. As I said I have a piece of technology and the Rolex owner has jewellery. We have them for different purposes.

                  • @try2bhelpful: Why are you not using them? Why do you have new Apple products?

But that that’s my point too, they’re completely different things and trying to say Apple Watch lasts longer is just unrealistic. I’m not saying a Rolex plays music either. Accept that one item has a ton of functionality and another lasts much much longer.

                    • @Ghaowudjy: That is precisely my point. The Rolex is jewellery that tells the time and the Apple Watch is a multifunction mini computer on your wrist that, incidentally, tells the time. Mostly the Apple Watches are replaced when people want better functionality rather than them dying. If people are willing to change the batteries regularly they may well last for 20 years or more.

Yes, Apple devices tend to be upgraded regularly because of better functionality but I tend to repurpose my old devices as music players for the car or pass them onto other people.

Completely agree that à Rolex is likely to retain its value better than an Apple Watch but that is because the Apple Watches are always upgrading functionality and the Rolex isn’t. People buy Rolexes for the name; à Casio watch could give you the same functionality and they don’t keep value either.

      • +1

        Rolex is also a scam

      • -1

But rolex has good resale value

        • +1

good luck buying one with good resale value at retail lol

      • -2

The watch for the ultra insecure.

      • Rolex watches are much cheaper in the shops in Asia :)

    • +1

Bro hasn't heard of Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, Omega, A. Lange & Söhne, Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Richard Mille or Breguet.

      • -1

        have you heard of Hamilton?

        • I’m not giving away my shot.

  • -8

Not for me, let us know when it hits at least 8.3% off.

  • +9

I have the Ultra 1 and it is a great watch.

I use it for fitness, as an extension of my phone, for apps like weather, messages, controlling my iPhone music; you can even as a remote for the camera. Since I got into the Apple watches my iPhone is barely used; apart from taking photos and the Qantas fitness app.

The price is a fair bit to swallow but you use these watches every day for multiple functions.

I’m a 5ft female but I went the bigger watch for the screen realestate.

These obviously aren’t for everyone but the neggars are displaying their own ignorance rather than if the watch is suitable. My suggestion is people do some research and see if it meets their needs.

    • +1

I am still rocking the Gen 1 too, was thinking of upgrading to the Gen 3 but then again, battery level still ok and the watch titanium case is a tank. So I may hang onto until Gen 4 comes out later this year perhaps.

      • +2

I’m happy with my Gen 1 as well. Although the schmeck stuff like detection for sleep apnoea and hypertension are on the later models. I also do like the newer black case. While the battery life is OK, or they come up with a real game changer, I will probably stick with what I have for a while.

        •   Thanks to both of you for those comments. I still have a Gen 1 which I got refurbished. Seems to be doing a pretty good job, although I would love to upgrade and get a few of the extra goodies youv'e both shown me I can wait a tad longer…cheers

          • @slipperypete: Look at when the new model is about to come out. MacRumours doesn’t have much info on the new model Ultra or when it might be released. Usually roughly September, if they are doing an upgrade this year.

      • I too was mostly happy with my ultra 1 however I cracked the screen recently and it seems they are very expensive to repair …

        • +1

Mine seems to be bullletproof. Not a mark on either the case or screen and I’ve had plenty of oh damn that’s surely busted moments.

    • +14

the neggars are displaying their own ignorance

      The who now? 🤨

      • I suspect most of them have never worn any sort of Apple Watch let alone an Ultra. Happy to be proven wrong if they wish to give us their experience with the products.

        • +1

So I got à neg and they didn't refute my statement. That would be typical.

      • +1

it's ok she has friends that are neggars :D

    • Pretty much everything you mentioned can be done using a regular apple watch or even se

      • +4

Disagree. Battery anxiety is real on non ultra.

        • +1

          This.
I upgraded to the Ultra pretty much just for battery life alone.

        • Not when you are aware that your heart won’t stop once your watch is not counting beats 😅

I don’t think that many people really use their watch as their main device or for any critical reason

        • My wife's series 7 S/Steel lasts a full day comfortably

          • @maverickjohn: My ultra which replaced a series 7 lasts nearly 2 days. When I couldn’t change it at the end of day it gave me battery anxiety.

            • +1

@ozbargainhunter400: Fair enough, I guess if you can charge it nightly the non ultra are still ok.

              • +1

@maverickjohn: 100%, I would've kept my s7 if it wasn't for that! Going camping or just slightly off script just caused me so much woes cause I try not to rely on the phone too much and work from my watch/laptop.

  • I got a practically new ultra 2 with original charger and packing for 682.43 via techagain_au on eBay . loop mobile sometimes has similar. Battery health 100% , registered 2024 originally. Might be worth a look if you are on the fence. I have a random Amazon bought Milanese rip off band that I main.

    • +4

I have a “third party” Milanese band as well. I think they are the best option because they look good and it is pretty easy to get the watch on and off.

    • +1

Yeah, I got a similar with my Gen 1. Absolutely immaculate and battery 100%. Strap and charger were absolute rubbish though. I would rather they just sell the watch body and nothing else.

  • +6

5% off if you go to Officeworks - they still haven’t matched.

  • +3

One of the best sleep and fitness trackers on the market according to the Quantified Scientist on YouTube. Worth every cent if you care about your health and wellbeing.

    • +4

As far as sleep and fitness tracking goes, the Ultra offers nothing more than the standard Apple Watch. Better to save some $$ and get the slightly less overpriced version.

      • +6

For me the biggest advantage of the Ultra is the screen size. It makes it easier to read. You can use watch faces that have more complications in them. Having gone to the Ultra I probably won’t go back.

        • +4

Agree, night and day difference, regardless of if the tracking is the same or not

        • +3

Waypoint and modular ultra faces are ace

        • If only my wrists were bigger. Wanted those complications as well. Tried the Ultra 3 at the Apple Store, I looked like Ben 10. Went for the Series 11 42mm instead!

    • -2

I hate to say it, but those sleeping and fitness trackers don't actually do a single thing for health and wellbeing lol

      • When you’re able to see vital information about your body without visiting a doctor, I think it’s very useful for your health and wellbeing.

      • +1

i can see how it might not for some but it made a life changing difference for me.

      • Garmin's multi-band GPS tracking is more accurate than my phone, especially with tall structures.

  • +5

Sadly, we're living in an influencer based economy

    • +4

Sadly we have people commenting who have no practical experience of the product.

      • -1

My $100 amazfit watch does almost everything, at a fraction of the cost.

        • -1

          Whatever dude.

        • +1

Only other smart watches that come close are some of the Garmins and its different use cases at that point.

      • +5

        It’s always the Android brokies.

        • +1

          apple fanbois are very touchy

    • +4

Sadly, your comment has zero relevance

    • -1

What's wrong with that? What economy would you rather be living in?

  • +5

Doesn't last as long as as Garmin unfortunately

    • -7

Don’t say it out to loud you might trigger the Apple fan base 😂

      • Am Apple fanboy. Completely agree re battery

        • +2

Absolutely. If battery time is your most important feature then that is a no brainer.

    • True story

    • Different use cases.

Garmin is a sports watch with smart functions. Generally inferior integration with phones, apps, cards. But it can go days/weeks without a recharge.

Apple and Android options are smart watches with sports functions, doing everything well at the expense of battery life.

  • -6

Will this watch last around 20 years like my previous 'cheapish' Seiko watch? I want to buy this but I only buy a watch every 20 years so I hope this one will last until 2046 before I upgrade. Do Apple do the servicing every 10 years like the Seiko watch service center and if so how much does it cost? The Seiko store charges me $400 to service every 10 years. They say the Seiko will last more than 50 years but I know Apple Watch won't last 50 years but if it lasts 20 years I will be happy.

    • +2

Look at it like your smart phone. How long do you expect that to last?

      • +1

Exactly. Imagine expecting an electronic device to last that long.

        • +2

I have an iPOD and a nano that are still working and they still have the original battery. They were manufactured in the early 2000s However, the functionality is so out of date I don’t use them anymore. Nowadays things often become obsolete before they actually fail.

          • @try2bhelpful: would happily take them if you don’t want em ;)

          • @try2bhelpful: Also got a functional OG ipod. Ive seen videos of folks modernising and jacking them up with SSD’s, bluetooth and custom software. The price for them already bottomed years ago and somehow on an upwards trend lol (no one is getting rich though lol)

            • @Charity: Especially for its time it had a pretty good hard drive in the iPOD. Retro seems to be the rage. Personally I would just buy something modern. My ipad Pro 11” is series 1 and it is still going strong too.

    • -1

Your nokia 3310 is still probably running (Albeit without service). Do you apply your logic the same?

This is a digital system, the battery will be shot in 4 years let alone 10 years.

I don't think smart watches (any, even garmins) would be suited for you. Stick to quartz / mechanical.

    • Only some garmin or xiaomi models might serve you more than 5 6 years with similar functionality as their battery can last more than a week. The rest are literally normal consumable digital products with inflated prices and smart marketing.

  • +2

A few years ago I got an Apple Watch 5 so I could have my Dick Tracey watch. My phone goes in my bag in the morning and I take it out in the evening to update my health apps and to charge it overnight. Most of the things I want to do on my phone I can do on either with my watch or my iPad. If someone rings me, or sends me a message, I can deal with it on the watch. The battery on my Apple 5 was a dud, and we were going OS for 50 plus days, so I got an Ultra 1 for under $1K from Costco. As I said earlier the extra screen realestate means that for me the Ultra is easier to use than the standard Apple Watch. Once you go big you can’t rejig.

  • +1

If you want to save a bit of $ and are ok with an older gen, keep an eye out on eBay for refurb Apple Watch Ultra 2. I picked one up last year for about $650 it was as new and had AppleCare+, 100% battery health etc. Not a heap of difference between the AWU 2 & 3 imo.

    • -1

the fast charging is worth it imo but i'd also probably wait for the 4 to release and get a used 3 or new 4

      • Worth paying double the price? I’m not convinced tbh. I’ve had the AWU 1 and 2 and the 2 charges plenty quick enough.

  • At least the Apple watch Ultra has a usable battery life unlike all the other useless apple watches less than 24 hours or usable battery life. To me having to charge your watch multiple times a day makes them useless

  • Used - As new? Are these refurbs?
