Is there still hype for hall effect? I thought the hype was years ago? tmr is the new hyped thing which is definitely better than hall effect from what I have seen. That's going to be my next keyboard.

    • TMR is different technology, and we will launch afforadble TMR keyboards soon!

    • +1

One of the major benefits to TMR is lower power consumption. For a wired keyboard that's less important (but for wireless controllers and stuff, it's beneficial!)

It also is more precise than HE and the slots are compatible with regular mech switches meaning you can have a combo board with mech and TMR switches. Even wired keyboards using less power is important just for using lower power lol. If you use it with a laptop even you will get more battery life with it. There are no downsides to tmr

I read tmr as tomorrow, and was like, damn what new keyboard tech is coming out tomorrow…

  • You can get pretty similar prices on Amazon with free shipping https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0F7R7QMZH/?th=1

  • Got a sk75 tmr from AliExpress. Pretty good

    • -1

That's the reason they are being sold for cheap….

      • IROK is same price and uses sparklink instead of rongyuan.. (sparklink is basically the gold standard of factory oems)

  • how much are these in China? I might go there again if there is a good flight deal.
last yr we went there for holiday (shopping spree) - purchased major brand (make all kinds tech apprear ozb often) RGB mech red&blue switch keyboards for $15/ea. so far so good

What is the deal with a magnetic keyboard?

Is it just that weird little wristband thing that's the magnetic part? or is it the actually keycaps themselves that are magnetic?
    What are the benefits?

      The keycaps

    • easier to google it than to explain it properly

Typically mechanical keyboard switches are actuated when you push down a certain depth, such that two metal plates make contact and conduct electricity.
Hall Effect switches use the magnetic field to determine the exact position of the switch and how far up/down it is.

This is useful as you can now have an analogue measure of your input, if you wanted to modulate your input like for example pressing at 10% or 50% power as opposed to on/off. This can be useful if you are playing a driving game and don't want to go flat out on the accelerator.

It also has further use, as it can allow you to reactivate the key infinitely many times beyond the typical actuation point of a mechanical switch, where you previously needed the switch to rise above the actuation point to reactivate. Or you can change how deep the switch actuation is.

This is mostly a feature for gaming, and you wouldn't see very much benefit for normal home/office typing, as you could just buy switches with different actuation forces.

  • I grabbed a Hall effect keyboard from AliExpress. Enjoy it a lot.

  • I'm considering a smaller form factor keyboard for my work from home / gaming station. Would a hall effect keyboard, or other, be suitable for both typing and gaming?

  • Aliexpress prices much the same, but is 8k polling REALLY a thing?
A standard 1000Hz keyboard reports a keypress with a 1-millisecond delay. An 8000Hz keyboard reports it with a 0.125-millisecond delay. The difference is a microscopic 0.875 milliseconds. Reportedly forcing a high polling rate is more likely to interrupt the CPU And cause stuttering in games unless you have a high end CPU like a 9800X3D….
Doesn't really seem to be worth the hype?
