New PC - Upgrade RAM?

Hey all.

I'm looking at purchasing this from Nebula PC: https://www.nebulapc.com.au/products/nova

Would it be worth upgrading the RAM to 32Gb for gaming at 1440 or would the 16Gb it comes with be sufficient?

I haven't purchased a new PC for a really long time - is there anything else (component wise) you think I should consider?

Thanks heaps.

  • 1) 16GB is perfectly fine for gaming
    2) this is not the time to be upgrading RAM

  • Many games actually run fairly well with 16GB RAM. So I wouldn't spend the money on RAM, I'd either allocate that to more storage (note they are getting even more expensive soon) or a better Gpu.

HW Unboxed tested various systems with 16 / 32Gb ram and systems with 8GB or 16GB of VRAM (Video memory: the kind thats embedded into your graphics card)

Vram is way more important for high resolution gaming, and it's especially true if you want to enjoy using the various AI enabled features such as DLSS, with Ray tracing.

If you have money left over I guess you could upgrade to a 16GB card like a RTX 5070TI, and that will let you crank the graphics all the way up in most games.

  • Is there anything else you think I should consider?

It's not a PC component itself but you should know OLED monitors have come down in a price a lot recently :)

  • I see you are buying a gaming PC. 16GB is the sweet spot. You have an extra 12GB in the GPU!

There will be very little ROI if any for a RAM upgrade. I used to say "RAM is cheap, so WTF", but not any more.

  • IMO this is a better deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/953098

Less storage (although only $49 to upgrade to 1TB) but 32GB RAM and the 9070xt is generally better for gaming than the 5070.

    • Ok - thanks for the suggestion. I'll do some comparing between the two.

  • YOLO it get 64gb

  • I'd go for more RAM. You don't need it for gaming, but you probably have other shit open in the background like firefox / chrome / edge and they take up a surprisingly large amount of memory, as well as all the other stuff like steam, razer / logitech or similar software, and everything else.

Phones these days are starting to come with 12 - 16 GB of RAM, and it wasn't that long ago (or at least it doesn't seem like it was that long ago) when a top of the line gaming PC only needed 8 GBs of RAM, so it probably won't be too long before you need 32 GBs on a PC.

    • Android on ARM is a very different platform with much higher memory usage than Windows on x86

  • OK - I'm sorry to use Oz bargain as a fails safe but I've narrowed this down to (I think) three options.

Which of the following would be best bang for buck 1440 gaming - as far as I can tell it would go from slowest to fastest and also the cheapest to most expensive:

    Nova - from Nebula
Nebula N6 Micro ATX Case - Black
    AMD Ryzen 5 7500F | 5.0GHz | 6 Cores | 12 Threads
GIGABYTE B650M GAMING PLUS WIFI Micro ATX
GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 5070 WINDFORCE SFF OC - 12GB
    16GB Kingston Fury Beast RGB 6000MHz DDR5 (2x8GB) - Black
    1TB Kingston NV3 M.2 [R: 6000MB/s | W: 5000MB/s]
Nebula Ventra ARGB Air Cooler - Black
    MSI MAG A750GN 750W 80+ Gold

    $2,199.00

    Nexus PC's - from Nebula
    AMD Ryzen 5 7500F Processor
    120mm ARGB Tower Cooler

Nebula HydraCore 240mm ARGB Liquid Cooler - Black
    ASUS B650EM-E TUF WIFI - DDR5
Team T-Create Expert White 32GB (2x16GB) 6000MHz DDR5 - White (BRAND AND MODEL MAY VARY - however always 6000MHz or higher and from Lexar, Kingston, Corsair, etc.)

    FSP 750W 80+ Gold
    Nebula N7 mATX - Black
3x Nebula 120mm ARGB PWM Fans

    $2,398.00

I'm leaning towards the Nexus PC for $2,163.00 but hoping someone could confirm this would be the best pick (value for money wise)?

    Thanks again.

    • If you're playing competitive FPS games with a super high refresh rate monitor then the R7 (3rd option) is the go, otherwise definitely go the Nexus (2nd option) for best bang for buck.

Would personally go the Nexus and chuck the extra cash into larger/more storage, 1TB isn't much these days.

      • Thank you - I think that is the confirmation I was looking for!

I have a 1TB drive I can pull out of my current PC that isn't that old.

        • NVME or SATA? Many modern games will require NVME gen 4 or later for fast asset streaming. Gen 3 and lower will still work fine, you'll just get frequent frame hitching as it loads assets.

          • @trankillity: It's an NVME drive - a Verbatim Vi7000 which a quick search says is Gen 4?

  • the motherboard Gigabyte B650M Gaming WiFI on the $2163 system is junk.. (the Gaming PLus is a little better but still bad - power limited..).
    https://www.techspot.com/review/2861-amd-b650-motherboards-p…

the Asus B650EM-E Tuf, gets you PCI-express 5.0 on the NVME and GPU.. if you ever upgrade. and 3 M2 slots if I remember..

the $2399, the extra $236 gets you a 7800x3d, a liquid cooler and a much better motherboard and a different case and GOLD power supply (versus bronze) and 9070xt (16gb) versus 5070 (12 gb), vesus a bronze.. this is my pick of the three..

BTW the free game Crimson Desert is pretty impressive.. its currenlty around the $100 mark.. if you end up getting for free.
