Recommended an EV under $60K

Hey OzB, I need some help looking for a BEV (totally new to this space, but I have solar and battery to charge at home so thought it'd be the best choice for a next car). Some requirements I have are:

  • Under $60K drive away
  • Large boot that can fit double pram + some light groceries
  • Spacious rear seats that can fit 2 rearward-facing car seats without impeding on space for front driver and passenger
  • Good range (ideally 450km+)

In this economic environment, ideally the cheaper the better but obviously don't want it to rattle or fall apart soon after buying it…

Thanks for your time. Feel free to tell me anything else I should know or ask further questions if needed :)

The three main cars to look at are

There are some options in the sub 50k category now but they are fairly smaller and/or less popular cars. You can look into the JEACOO, Geely, SMART and MG

I think you might need to look at the Kia EV5, Leapmotor C10, or Tesla Model Y especially for the double pram and groceries requirement.

Many of the smaller midsize ones seem prioritise cabin space over boot space, so the Geely EX5, Aion V, MG S5 would fit the rear facing car seats with tall driver and passenger, but probably not the double pram.

Sealion 7 is the way to go. Fantastic for the money. Go test drive one.

    • Saw one of these the other day in the flesh and up close the other day… Very good looking piece of kit and MUCH larger than I thought it was going to be.

Skoda Enyaq. It has the largest actual boot in this segment (not counting areas you can't access when loaded or dodgy measurements to the roof).

You might be able to get the long range (547km) for $60k or there's the standard (437km) advertised for $55k drive away.

Not sure about the rear facing seats?

A unique layout combines strings and the door speaker panel to create a guitar-like effect. You can strum to relax

      Lmao

For me, I'll look at the Zeekr 7x, a little over your budget at $63k drive away.

  • BYD Sealion 7 if you hate Elon Musk more, Tesla Model Y if you hate the CCP more.

    • Which should one choose if they enjoy both the CCP and Elon Musk? Asking for a friend.

      • Both, obviously

      • Tesla because they're made in China.

  • I have a Geely EX5 …. Not sure about double pram (had one of those $uckers over 25 years ago… they are big!) but as far as car going from A to B it’s been great. I mean if you fold the back seat down then sure the pram will fit. For a bit over $40k u get a great car, quick charge, built by a maker that sells more cars in China than BYD I believe.
    Good luck.

if you fold that back seats down, where will the 2 babies sit? ;)

I'm sure most double prams will fit in a Geely EX5 with the back seats up.

  • IM6 is a big one. Base model is $62k I believe.

Seal - deceptively spacious. Take your pram to confirm boot size. You already know it's not just the volume, it's the shape that matters.
