2004 wants its mobile plan back

  • Can you port from Aldimobile to this, or need to briefly change networks first?

    • +3

Yes, you can port directly. I've never had any issues porting between Telstra, Belong, and Boost.

  • +1

Can I port from Boost? Just clicked ‘critical info’ and saw the documents are labelled’Boost’

    • that's just telstra being cheap

      you can port from boost

  • Regular price goes up to $44 on 5 May (and when it's on sale again it will likely be $15).

Will the SIM still activate after 5 May or will it require further payment of $5?

    • +1

It will activate without further payment.

  • Can't proceed with payment with technical error on their website.

    • +3

I’ve had this issue for many years. No matter whether I changed my name, address, or phone number, the problem was never resolved.

      • +2

It went thru now, the only thing I did was key in all the details manually not with autofill from the browser.

        • Sorry, my mistake. I thought this was the Boost deal. My issues have been with Boost, not Telstra.

    • Use different browser

  • I have this plan so I have some coverage in remote areas for non-000 emergencies (calling a tow truck, etc).

But I was recently on the top of a mountain in deep southwest Tassie (well away from civilization). Not a bar of signal with Telstra, but full 4G with Vodafone, I'm thinking about ditching this plan, especially because the missus has an iPhone with the satellite messaging feature

A cheaper option is to get a Roamless eSIM. Roamless are one of the very few eSIM providers that can roam through Telstra, and AFAICT they're the cheapest eSIM provider for Australian data that has non-expiring credit. It's like a pre-paid PAYG plan for data, with data at 2.45 USD per GB (roughly $3.55 Australian dollars per GB at the moment).

But it is a data connection they give you, so you'll need something extra to make phone calls. If you add credit to Skype, you can call out to ordinary phone numbers, as a voice call. Or you could use messaging to contact your tow truck, if they monitor messaging.

If you don't like Skype, you can sign up to the Crazytel PAYG plan with no monthly fee, but be aware that this plan doesn't include a phone number, so people can't call you, and on outgoing calls the caller ID will always be "private number".

You can pay extra to add a phone number to the Crazytel plan, so it will appear as your caller ID, and people can call you. That costs $2/month for a landline-type phone number.

Roamless also have two ways you can call out to ordinary phones through their app:

      • The simple method is to use outgoing calling through the app, which cost 0.04 USD per minute (about 6c Australian currency), but you'll appear to be calling from England or possibly some other overseas country. No incoming calls possible.

      • The more difficult method is to sign up for a "roamless number", which is a brand-new thing, and looks like it costs 60 USD per year, so rather expensive.

Or you could always message someone you trust, and get them to call out the tow truck.

      • So all the spammers use crazy tell by the looks of it..

        • I'm curious why you think so. There are plenty of overseas VOIP providers who have significantly cheaper call costs than Crazytel, why would telemarketers use a more expensive service?

      • This post is super informative! Only a small correction I'll add… i just set-up with Crazytel on PAYG plan and I've set up Caller ID with my normal mobile number (which I'll soon change from Boost to Telstra casual). I'm overseas much of the year and I mainly want free incoming calls to my AU number. When I need to call outbound, mostly Australia or NZ, my Caller ID is registered with Crazytel, i don't pay them for a new phone number and caller ID. Hopefully that makes sense!

        • I'm overseas much of the year and I mainly want free incoming calls to my AU number.

          and

my Caller ID is registered with Crazytel, i don't pay them for a new phone number and caller ID.

Having your Caller ID registered with Crazytel is called "CLI overstamping". While it does show your mobile number when you call out, it does not create a way for people to call you through Crazytel. Anyone who tries to call the overstamped number will actually be calling your mobile, through the mobile network as a voice call. In the commenter's case above, that won't work as they're out of range of the mobile network they have a call plan with.

Nor will it get you "free incoming calls" while overseas, as again you're out of range of the mobile network you have a call plan with. You'll need to have roaming enabled on your mobile call plan, and that costs money to receive calls. Or do you mean you're using wifi calling while overseas, to avoid paying for roaming?

      • i cannot get roamless to work properly. it worked for a while and updated its APN details to CSL and uses optus

        now it stopped working

        did they switch to telstra?

        • Roamless eSIMs will roam to Optus or Telstra, apparently you get whichever one your mobile "finds" first. I usually get connected to Telstra in inner-city Brisbane.

Is the signal indicator at the top of your screen showing you have signal? And is Roamless the only eSIM you have?

Go into your phone's SIM settings for the Roamless eSIM, and check that roaming is turned on, and data is enabled. If both are on, try turning data off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.

Also, have you checked you still have credit in your account?

        • Second reply: I just saw this advice on Whirlpool:

So the tip is – if Roamless not working, use Manual Network selection to select one of the other Roamless roaming partners in the country you are visiting.

Also remember, if you're swapping between different eSIMs, when you select the Roamless eSIM it can take up to 2 minutes for Roamless to auto-negotiate with the local telco. Data will only be available when the signal indicator at the top of your phone's screen shows some signal for the Roamless eSIM.

          • +1

@Russ: yes i originally got the esim working using these hacks. coincidentally figured it out myself by accident

including the manual network selection. however recently it stopped working.

might need to reset and start from scratch

  • +1

The renew $ will be $39 after six months I guess. So no deal for long term plan.

    • +1

Yup, I would go with Amaysim's $60/year plan over 2x this a year

      • Where is this plan?

      • Deal breaker for me is WiFi calling overseas. Annoying that only Telstra and their MVNOs support it when outside of Australia!

        • You can inexpensively add a roaming pack to that $60/year Amaysim plan.

Roaming packs last for 365 days, or until you've used up all of your data, SMS and call allowances. The cheapest roaming pack has 100 SMS and 100 minutes of calls, and only costs $20.

There are several roaming pack options available, they're listed here.

  • can't check out online.

Try using a debit card (instead of credit card) and typing your address manually (instead of the autofill).

    • Use different browser

  • Would work for a GPS tracker?

I have same problem, tried different browser and different card, same issue.

  • As the name implies, this looks like a great plan for some casual use.

    • i'm a very casual person and it suits me just fine

  • Does it come with a BigPond CD-ROM?

  • 5400 pts onTelstra Plus - Can be used as 28 days or casual as this..

  • +1

It is about keeping the number alive and getting incoming calls then $15 for a year is much better choice
