What's Japan like in June, not too hot?

    • +23

      Unbearable

      • What part of Australia are you from?

    • +2

      Brisbane in February x2.

    • +7

June is a wet season and still relatively okay even at the worst spots, such as Kyoto.

Things get worse from July onwards.

There is always an option of visiting Hokkaido during that time.

      • +2

Agree. We found August was the worst in Tokyo and Osaka. Unbearable with humidity at that time. Our favourite time was November, really nice weather.

      • For extra context though, it is peak period in Hokkaido for the locals because they know Hokkaido is one of the coolest areas in the country for the season

    • +1

very humid and sometimes its brutally hot with it

    • +2

Never again for me, sticky, humid, rain rain, it's just not enjoyable unless everything you're planning on doing is in doors and you live just under some train station.

But there's a lot of parts of Japan you want to visit but is outdoors, so it ruins the trip.

      • +1

Also many train stations particularly away from the major cities the platforms aren't air-conditioned!

They basically rely on fans or the trains themselves moving air.

It gets absolutely awful in high humidity, I felt like I was dying the entire time.

        • You’re complaining the platforms aren’t air conditioned??!! Good god !

          • @mjref: I'm not talking about above ground platforms.

  • +5

Sticky and hot. Cheap fares for a reason.

    • +4

      And not even that cheap

      • Probably because the fuel surcharge skyrocketed

  • Is Japan’s summer really that much hotter than Australia’s?

    • +9

I went in August a couple years ago and yes, it felt way worse than Australia, mostly due to the humidity.

    • +5

Depends which part of Australia but yes the humidity is pretty rough

    • +4

      Humidity, not hotter

    • +3

Yeah. Has anyone who complains about Japan been to say… Cairns?

    • +1

No. If you’re from Melbourne it will be very different to our dry summers. If you’re from anything north of Sydney it’s the same.

    • It's terrible, annoying because a lot of festivals is happening in summer.

Not so much hotter but it's very humid so you'll be sweating all the time, esp in big cities they don't really have a lot of trees like here so you'll be walking under the sun (or rain) and on concrete paths. Then when you actually find tree shade to hide from the sun you'll get swarmed by mozzies.

Those you can still plan though, it's the typhoon related disruptions that you really need plan B for.

    • When I went in 2023 (albeit before a nerve injury which has screwed up my temperature sensitivity) it wasn't too bad. However, it depends how well you tolerate humidity and heat. There is air-conditioning in most places, and you can go north if it is better for you as it will be cooler.

Dang, was hoping for dates in Nov/Dec like last year.

    • +1

could be a deal later but even in dec would be hard to find a good deal as its peak season, normally you just book in advance before prices go up?

  • +1

Perfect time to go up the mountains and do some hiking since it'll be cool but not too cold. Too bad I've already got an upcoming trip in May so this'll be too soon after that. Oh well, maybe this time next year.

    • How's May across Japan for weather, if you've been before?

      • +1

I went last May and the weather was okay. Some rainy days, some warmer days, some humid days.

Gets a little uncomfortable considering the amount of walking but nowhere near as bad as late June-July

        • That's interesting. May in Japan is considered one of the best months weather wise. It's generally put in the same category as October and November.

    • It gets very hot in the mountains also, especially when around valleys. You must also be careful as there are lots of bears, wild boars, hornets, snakes and leaches.

  • -2

My 9 yo mind read it as fuk u oka

    • -3

Day one take-a-shita street, day two fuk-u-oka. Hilarious.

  • From Sydney and didn't mind the heat at all, been twice in June because it's the off-season, there's less crowd and I would do it again.

The only downside is that it makes hot springs and hot baths unbearable because you're just sweating in double the heat.

  • Any Perth to Tokyo specials?

  • +1

Hokkaido OK that time of year?

    • Yes, Hokkaido is good but gets busy around popular areas.

  • When do the deals for october come up? I would like to fly into osaka and out of tokyo. Any idea the best way to book that trip?

  • I love how you get an extra return flight to Fukuoka for cheaper than Tokyo !!
