4K in glorious 30Hz! How old are these? Can get a new one from China for $5 with these specs - minus the power supply. I guess you are paring for a power supply with free bonus vintage dock.

    • +7

It's actually a great dock. I bought (a second back up) one off their last post because it's the only reliable one I've been able to find that doesn't cost $100 plus and is a brand. For someone that works from home in an admin capacity, this is perfect.

      • +5

Yeah, pretty good price considering the genuine power supply. I purchased a Dell dock from Australian Computer Traders and it came with a generic power supply that didn't even have a RCM. Plenty of people still use 1080 monitors for home office.

      • +3

        Which one do you recommend?

    • +5

What Chinese one do you recommend?

        • +3

Don't worry. Don't need it anymore

    • Can you share the link which one $5 you referring?

    • +1

Not sure about the lenovo, but Dell likes model year naming. WD15's are 2015, WD19's 2019, WD22's 2022. Retired the last of them a few years ago now but the WD15 was solid enough for a couple of HD panels.

For a couple of 4K screens on a budget I'd be looking at maybe a lenovo usb-c gen 2 (40AS) but they're nowhere near this price point yet

  • +1

FHD 1080p is getting pretty underwhelming on any level now .. its a pass from me

  • +8

kinda standard price for 2nd hand TBH

  • What's the best buy In this situation?

  • Is the 130W charger the 7.4mm ?

    • -1

      Lenovo Slimtip

  • If I have 2x S2721DGF, which dock would be best?

    • +9

Considering that your monitor supports 2560x1440 (144Hz on HDMI or 165Hz on DP) - neither.

Both docks limited to FHD (1920 x 1080) and at 60Hz.

      • +1

I've been looking around for a 120Hz+ dock lately and there are surprisingly few good options. You have to go fairly high in the price range to get 1080@120 support, let alone 1440.

        • There is Thunderbolt 5 Docks (at exorbitant price) if 120Hz 4K is your thing…
Tho anything above 4K is still stuck at 60 Hz.

  • Can anyone confirm if it will support dual monitors for MacBook? Will it need some software to support that?

    • +1

I doubt it. You need thunderbolt. Or displaylink

    • -1

Had the same question. Gemini says no as both monitors will just be mirrored

Both the Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock (DK1633) and Dell Business Dock (WD15) will likely struggle to provide extended (different) display support for two monitors on a Mac. Apple's macOS does not natively support DisplayPort MST (Multi-Stream Transport), which these generic USB-C docks use to split dual-monitor signals.

    • +1

      tried this. no

    • +1

Nope, not with MacBook air I've got.

  • Can this support one qhd and one fhd monitor?

  • +2

    Any deal on Dell Wd19?

  • +2

I handed a WD15 back this week due to underwhelming res.

  • Does this work with Samsung Dex?

    • Good question

    • It works with Huawei EMUI desktop

    • +1

tried on Samsung A23, doesnt work.

      • +1

Gemini says: The Samsung Galaxy A23 does not officially support Samsung DeX. DeX is a premium feature reserved for higher-end Galaxy S, Note, and Fold series devices to provide a desktop-like experience. The A23 lacks the necessary hardware to support wired or wireless DeX functionality, as confirmed by users.

Fairdinkum was looking at similar product the other day, but didn't want to pay more than $30… Boom… Purchased.

  • +1

    Just purchased

Dell 24 240Hz Monitor - SE2426HG for WFH. Will this be compatible and work well? Newbie here.

    • +3

It will 'work' but you'll be sacrificing a lot of your monitors capabilities. You won't get more than 60Hz out of these docks.

      • Hmm okay thank you

        • +2

Though probably also ok if you just using ms office etc

          • +1

@chinaman: Yeah it's just MS office and some other what I would consider 'light' internal work programs. Not for gaming or graphic design/engineering

  • +2

I use one of those Lenovo docks at home for a dual screen setup, can confirm it works great no issues

  • +8

Ahh Ozbargain, expecting 10+ year old mid-range business hardware to keep up with current gaming kit for the massive price of $30.

Either are great if you need a cheap WFH solution, the WD15s are pretty solid, from memory most of the breakages for all the ones I've supported were from people trashing the USB-C plugs

  • +2

I have this at work: Dell Business Dock WD15 K17A. Absolute rubbish.

  • I use a dell WD19 with a macbook pro and it's always sucked - intermittent crap-outs requiring reset. Still, when it's working it at least gives 60fps unlike the thinkpad usb-c gen 2 dock I used previously which caps at 30fps w/ shit quality.

    Maybe newer docks are better…

  • The Lenovo docks are solid, if unexciting, performers. I’ve re-homed hundreds of them over the years with good success. I agree they’re best paired with monitors that don’t have high res - although you can connect at least one 4K it’ll only run at 30Hz so it’s a good idea to stick with 2K or lower. Hence, they’re really only good for home office setups.

I’ve found for the best results:

    • update the dock firmware to the latest.
    • update your computer drivers and firmware.
    • upgrade the cable to USB-C 3.2 or higher.
    • if possible, upgrade the power supply to 135w.

Have a look on eBay and you’ll find plenty of these around a similar price, or for a few $$ more search for the Type 40AS USB-C Gen 2 dock which has a HDMI instead of VGA.

    • +1

CAUTION: This only supports PD1.0 and only outputs fixed wattage (60W) to your laptop regardless of 90W or 135W slimtip power supply. I tried both and Lenovo Commercial Vantage reported as 60W supply.

      • +1

Fair point - 60w is generally good enough to keep most laptops alive and charging okay, but if yours is a high-powered device it may need more oomph otherwise it won’t be able to draw enough through this dock. But, it should be fine for most general purpose laptops. YMMV

  • dont forget that the Lenovo one has the power button so you can connect your laptop and then press the button to turn it on. worth $$$

    • Yes, but power buttons are not universal. So even tho this dock will work perfectly on all brands, worth pointing out the power button will only work on Lenovo or Dell respectively

    • So does the WD15

  • Caution: only supplies max 60W regardless of 90W/135W adapter.

  • FYI,
I did get a $5 DP-USB cable, that works with 4K60 display on a macbook. It could be paired with a cheap powered hub like this in the other port.

  • Thanks OP bought one for work, basic setup with a Lenovo laptop and a single 32" 4K screen, not fussed on refresh rate just need it to simplify connecting laptop to workstation.

  • -1

I need one I think as my Lenovo complains the USB ports are overloaded when I connect my webcam, light bar and microphone. But I can probably get work to supply me with one free

  • So refurbished doesn't mean alot at untech. I bought a dock from them, it was filthy and as soon as I powered it up the fan pushed out a cloud of dust. The connector was also broken and taped together. They replaced it but the issue is I literally think these are pushed out untested and not even cleaned, let alone refurbished.

    • That's a pity.
I've bought some big screens off them, and they came perfect. And the packaging was 10 out of 10.
