Cheap Flight from Adelaide to Italy

Please help, need a cost effective ASAP flight to Italy.

My 16yo daughter needs me ASAP in Gubbio Italy. She is on a school trip and despite being confident is NOT coping with being away. Complete meltdown with physical symptoms and not eating. Wants parents.
3 days into an emotional breakdown that nothing has helped, she wants a parent with her ASAP. Gone through the school exec, councilor, … options.

The next step is to find a cost effective flight to Italy ASAP to meet her in Gubbio Florence. I need to be travel now at whatever cost. Please help me to find the most cost effective travel from Adelaide to Italy near Gubbio.

I'm asking for help to find an ASAP flight at less than the $5k cost that I can find for Thursday 9/04.

OzBargain community please help.

I have a flight. Insurance has covered the cost. Leaving this morning. Thank you all!

      Safe travels!

    • +1

      What insurance are you with?!

      • That's the main question.
Then post it as a deal.

    • -4

Glad to see it's all sorted.
Can I make a niaive suggestion?
Would it have been cheaper/easier to get your daughter to fly home? Maybe with a friend from the group?

  • +10

Why not just put her on a flight back here.

    • +4

Can't cope on a school trip with known people, won't cope flying internationally with transits, by herself.
Schools also has responsibility to ensure a safe handover to parents.

      • Perhaps knowing she's going home she'd be ok. Just seems like a much simpler solution than OP attempting to organise ASAP flights to Italy, and hoping he/she gets a return flight at the same time as the kid.

        • +2

Also sorting out the unplanned return flight for a student will require time, funds (perhaps the personal CC of the staff) and explicit instructions from the parent/guardian before the airline would accept a booking for an unaccompanied minor flying internationally.
Those resources may not be available to the teaching staff who have the entire group to oversee and the planned tour to maintain.
It is difficult enough when such situations arise when travelling with students within the state or interstate within Australia. Coping with such a situation while O.S. is way more complex.

What does "cost effective: mean and how is it relevant here?

The only way to buy "cost effective" is the purchase tickets many months in advance!

Surely OP means ASAP by the sounds of it…..TOP DOLLAR!

Stop replying to the first comment with irrelevant dribble.

Emirates will get you from Mel to FCO (via DXB) in 24hrs for $1400 one way (round trip ~$2200)
Im sure a basic adelaide to melbourne shouldnt be hard to find

just throw stuff into google flights and work out what works for your dates and urgency (though id use it as an excuse to hang out with the kid in rome for a few days regardless )

  • +5

Best wishes OP and damn lucky you already have a passport. At least that's one thing going in your favour.

    • +2

If he didn't, he should be eligible for the 2 day priority processing

  • +1

School requires us to meet in Italy. Won't send her home alone

    • Damn that's quite a pickle. I can't help with flights sorry, but good luck with the situation.

    To confirm - i don't need $.
I need help finding a cost effective flight (before i book a full price last minute flight).

  • +1

    Firstly

    • Compare with https://www.google.com/travel/flights/
    • Make sure you book directly with the airline, do not use third party even if it's cheaper, you're not in a position to deal with additional hassle if something goes wrong.

I'll have a look, there should definitely be something for less than $5K. Do you want to leave at the earliest tomorrow or wait a day or two if there's a better price? Are you looking to book just a one way for now or the return with her as well? If the latter, which date?

    • I need to travel asap. Earliest tomorrow. One way is fine. Have time to work out the trip home.

Update: This is the best I've found so far.

        • I filtered to 2 stops max.
        • $1462 — according to Google Flights, this may go up a bit on the checkout screen.
        • Book with Emirates
        • ADL > MEL > DXB > FCO
        • Adelaide > Melbourne > Dubai > Rome
        • ADL to MEL departs at 6:00AM or 7:50AM - must catch one of these flights and then a long unfortunate layover in Melbourne.
        • Once you're in Rome, you'll need to find a way to Gubbio, I'll try look into that now.

You seem very stressed. Feel free to PM me if you want call so I can calmly walk you comparing or through the steps. I don't want any money and I'm not affiliated with any flight service or airline or anything.

      • +3

        Got it.

        • Go on Google Flights, select one way for tomorrow.
        • From: Adelaide
        • To: Gubbio
        • I see many options for less than $2000.
        • You can filter by number of stops or preferred airlines.
        • If you arrive in FCO (Rome), it's a 3 hour drive to Gubbio, check train options too.
        • If you arrive in PEG (Perugia), it's a 45 min drive to Gubbio.

Let me know how it goes, I'm gonna keep doing research.
Qantas + Emirates seems to be the best combo so far to me.

        • Thank you. I get a $1460 49h flight. Will pay for a shorter flight

          • @funkyrx: The one I mentioned on my other reply was 37-38h for around the same price, check it out.

        Update 2: Rome to Gubbio

        • Disclaimer: This is information I sourced from ChatGPT, Reddit, etc. It would be best to speak to someone from there directly, the school's contacts in Gubbio may be the best option to confirm with.
        • NCC (Noleggio Con Conducente)
          • It's a private driver that takes you directly from the airport. You can pre book online or walk straight to their counter at FCO.
          • This is the most direct option but also the most expensive. I don't know how accurate it is for current but past reports indicate ~$500. Taxis and Uber are obviously more expensive but no need for them when this exists.
        • Public Transport
          • FCO to Roma Termini via Leonardo Express (30m • $23)
          • Roma Termini to Fossato di Vico-Gubbio via Regional Train (2.5h • $25)
          • Fossato di Vico to Gubbio via E052 bus (30m • $5)
          • This is the fastest way via public transport. For the cheapest way, you'll have to look for bus only routes but there's too many exchanges and reports of inaccurate timing so I would stick to trains for most of it. Read up on the ticketing system, apparently something about needing to stamp the ticket.
        • Car Rental
          • You can do this at FCO and take a car from there directly. One day rental cost is approximately $150.
          • I personally would not trust myself to drive safely and legally in a foreign country while worried about my daughter.
          • You need an International Driving Permit.
          • ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) are restricted zones where only residents can drive, Gubbio may be one of them.
  • How long is the trip?

  • Adelaide -> Singapore -> Rome was 24hrs. Looking for most direct path.

  • Momondo.com
    Rometorio.com

Both great websites for journey planning.
Rome to Rio will list alternatives to flying as well

  • I was about to ask about insurance. Glad it has worked out.

  • -1

Are you sure something criminal hasn't happened to her to trigger this, that she hasn't told you about?

    • +1

Sadly this was my worry as well. OP needs a stress free straightforward flight then ride to Gubbio so they're at their best to take care of the daughter and prepared in case something awful occured.

  • -5

I need OZB travel SMEs to lean in before I just pay whatever it costs.

    • +3

I don't need $. I need help finding and paying for a cost effective flight.

      • +1

        $5K is too much
