  • Makes a compelling case - this or iPhone 17 ?

    • +8

This. Mine has all day battery and i play Pokemon go throughout the day. I dont use my phone camera in x.5 mode anyway so no loss there. SLightly annoying is ESIM but i just had to change providers. 10/10 would recommend.

      • +1

how do you manage Pokemon Go that much? I use the 17 and I have to use battery saver whenever I play it or it drains 1% every 2 minutes

        • +4

They probably meant through out the day, as in, log in every now and then, lol. Not actually playing it.

I got a Moto G86 Power with its 6700mAh battery, and Pogo still chew through it like its nothing.

I rarely play on my primary phone 16 Pro Max because it just drains too fast.

        • I play it decently, turning off 5G and native refresh rate has improved the battery life 50%

    • +2

The bumper is a compelling case.

    • +6

17 for overall battery and camera.

      This for the vibe.

      • +3

No physical sim and a single camera for 1300 is a no no for me. Like you said, its the vibe and light weight for folks who like it that way.

        • +2

because everyone is now suddenly an youtube star and needs 3 cameras

          • +4

@Freestyle: I had 3 cameras and 5X optical on my 7 yr old P30 pro for which I paid $1100. The wide and telephotos come in handy. But if you are not the kind who travel / take many pics etc, you can do away with a single camera. I wouldnt give my money for such an undercut phone.

            • -1

@John Doh: I thought everyone is now doing it tougg, how do you all travel so much?

I can guarentee you most people just think of it as “I has more camera so its better”

              • +1

@Freestyle: Mate thats not the point. Even motorola recently launched a phone thats lighter than this iphone and has a larger battery and 3 cameras. Its nuts to compromise so much just because the company that released undercut hardware is a mutl-trillion dollar company. There is a reason why most people arent buying it.

I have definitely felt he need for wide angle camera when photographing indoors, and telephoto when photographing out doors. If its not there you will have to manage with whatever you have, but why compromise? You are not paying 300, you are paying 1300.

                • -1

@John Doh: because a camera is obviously the most important part of a phone right? Bigger screen, lighter and even has similar battery life to the regular, better processor, none of it matters as long as you get more cameras

                  • @Freestyle: Yes mate, camera is very important. Most people dont have dedicated cameras at home or DSLRs now that you have good cameras on the phone.

Bigger screen lighteer etc is all BS becuase motorola released a phone that is lighter and has bigger battery and more cameras. Apple could do it too. The iPhone air has its own market, but as you can see from others comment on this very own thread, having different cameras is a good to have feature. I am gonna stop this argument here because our thinking wont match, lets agree to disagree.

                    • -2

@John Doh: no its not, maybe you spend too much time taking photos of everything, most people dont care. I dont know why it baffles you that people dont give a shit about taking 4k photos of their family everywhere

As you can also see by the amount of people who clicked the link, plenty are interested. You should message them about how good motorola is maybe they’ll care

                      • @Freestyle: Clicking on the link does not mean sales. There are plenty of aricles saying how this model was not a hit and Apple has to dramatically scale down production. its clear that this model is not making enough sales. Some times i click on a ipad link to see if there was a macbook was also on sale. yes motorola may not sell well compared to apple, thats because of the Brand and ecosystem. My comparison of motorola was to tell you that having more cameras was doable, yet they didnt. Within the Apple brand itself, people are choosing base iPhone over this primarily because of cameras and battery.

Also, you are clearly living under a rock if you think people dont like taking pics. Its literally what people have been doing more and more in the recent years with social media exploding. That is why Camera is becoming more and more important on smart phones. If you dont believe me ask any AI. Next dont come back and say AI is wrong.

        • Isn't the air basically recouping costs for the development of the foldable iPhone?

Too many comprises for the cost imo. I miss cheap and cheerful phones.

          • @Caped Baldy: I wonder how much the iFold would cost lol.

            • +1

@John Doh: Easily $3k. The Oppo N6 is $3300 for the 512gb model. So probably $3300 minimum for the 256gb version and another $300 a storage upgrade.

      • hows the vibe on the 17

    • 17.

    • I was also stuck between the 2, but I ended up getting the 17

For me, the battery life matters as I am always on the go.
also i need the ultra wide to capture more in the frame without having to step back with people walking in between me and my subject. i didn't realise how much i actually shoot and record in ultra wide

Air has a slightly larger screen (6.5 vs 6.3) but really close, so this was a wash for me.

      • +3

Ultrawide is important, especially indoors where you cant step back at all.

      • I've experienced both as me using iphone air and wife using 17, we both used it for travelling. iPhone air have same battery life if not even a bit better than 17. I think cause air have better chipset and more efficient cellular.

But if you like taking pictures, iphone air is a no go. Ultrawide is a must if you like taking pictures.

Also esim only is a bit annoying if you like to go with cheap plan as sometimes they dont offer esim.

    • this is better than 17e

      • Well yeah, 17 and Air are both flagships, e series isn't

    • -1

iphone 17 if you want more cameras and better value overall i would get the 17, if you are ok with a single lens then get a iphone air, then the iphone air is definally better its got pro hardware in it. Most people are not happy with a single camera in the air because there is no optical lens for zoom etc like the 17 pro models. iPhone air single lens isn't bad though its good, you just lack the options of the pro models.

    • +4
      • 17 (and 17 Pro) is the smallest.
      • Air is the lightest.
      • Air is the thinnest.
      • 17 is aluminium. Air is titanium.
      • 17 has A19. Air/Pro/Pro Max have A19 Pro.
      • 17 naturally has better battery being thicker. 17 Pro Max has the best battery being thicker and bigger. The Air has the worst battery of the latest generation, but it's still really good, better than all past non-Pro Max models
      • The main cameras are the same. The 17 has an Ultra Wide, the Air does not. If photography is your most important factor, even an older Pro or Pro Max will be better.
      • -2

        3y old S23 Ultra beats them all on AI, >full day batt with 94% health 4708/5000, 200MP 10x zoom, S-Pen with remote/BT… ;)

        • -2

but the software is shit, you should learn by now hardware doesnt' equal better if the software is shit. Samsungs shit implementation of android is one of the worst out there. the google pixel of the same year has less hardware but yet takes way better photos than a S23 figure that one out genius.

    • I HAVE the 17 base model and its great but I held the 17 AIR when I was setting up my sisInLaws new mobile and id have swapped her on the spot. The 17 is fine but you HOLD the AIR and the smaller battery and slight donwgrade in camera was a easy things to give up. Romour is the AIR wont be repeated and these sales are a sign that APPLE who do not as a rule discount the smell of a fart have a lot of stock of these and I wouldnt be suprised to see $990 type offers before or on Black Friday as the 18 looms closer.

Would i buy it over the 17, HELL YEAH. eSIMS rock, you can have 6-8 on your phone and use 2 at once. Battery life is fine and it charges so quick with a decent charger who cares! Camera, well you used to never have a camera with you and now your down to 3 lens and not 4, big whoop! *& Im a photograher!

  • +16

Needs to be under $999 to make it compelling

  • Makes me wonder how much lower this will go. At $1.3k this is already a decent grab, but would sweeten the deal heaps if it (somehow) hits $1k. Tho seems unlikely

Only wish is that there was an ultrawide… Air 2 maybe?

    • There will not be an Air 2. It's a complete flop

        • +1

I think it’s a good product but poorly placed. It’s too pricey considering its shortcomings (single camera, less battery, mono speaker). If Apple can address these in the next iterations and/or drop the price then I think it will be a much more attractive option

      • It's only really a flop because of the camera and battery concerns. Can guarantee you that they would've sold more, so long as it had 2 cameras. Ultrawide lens is insanely important to the average consumer, at least in the u30s demographic

  • +2

wow almost the same as the s26 ultra earlier today

    • +3

You would get the s26U over this if you are flexible with what platform (Android/iOS) you use.

    • +1

Where was the s26 deal for a similar price?

      • It was $100 more here but most of us were skeptical since the site looks suspicious.

        • Its only 50 more on their eBay, though I'm inclined to believe they are gray import despite the OP claiming otherwise

    • +2

Just so anyone isn't confused; the iPhone Air isn't of the same tier as the S26 Ultra. The S26 Ultra competes with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

      • +1

iPhone 17 Pro Max tries to compete but fails on AI, stumbles by the S-pen & value for money vs superior S26 Ultra ;)

  • +2

Pay with discounted Ultimate gift cards from WW to get further 10% off

  • +2

I bought this when it was on kogan for like 1100 for as new deal. I don't regret it. I end the day at like 50 or 60%

    • Any comments on the sound quality from the speaker? Just for social media scrolling.

      • From what I understand, if you just watching TikTok video like vertically, not in landscape mode, it’s fine because there’s only speaker at top, so if you watch in landscape only one side of your phone will have sound?

  • +1

I get why this is not selling and significantly discounted.

If you’ve tried one on display in the store, you might have noticed it feels super hot at the back, and even a bit warm at the front. Not sure if it’s the battery or display making that heat.

But I have read that overheating is a downside of this phone.

If you’re using a case to avoid feeling that heat, you miss out on enjoying the super-thin design, which is the main point of the phone.

    • i don't know too many people who use their phone raw. Even with a case, it still would be thinner than a 17 with a case.

      • -1

I do. I also don't really know anyone who uses a case. The missus got a wallet case thing after she dropped her 16 and had a mini heart attack, but even then, she takes it out 90% of the time anyways.

If you spring for a decent (by which I mean, expensive) name brand phone these days, they can take a hit. I've dropped my Pixel 7 on the road / carpark a few times now and there's a little ding on the back but beyond that, barely a scuff, let alone a scratch.

If I'm paying four digits, the screen had better be (profanity) tough as nails.

    • +1

      I wear mine naked.
I’ll notice the camera bump get hot every so often.
But Never found the front hot

  • Perfect as my wife's phone for photos/messages/calls? Are main gripes just regarding the heat - assuming from gaming ?

    • I thought main gripes were camera and battery.
My wife didn't want one. For her its camera.

    • +1

Main gripes are 1. battery, 2. camera and 3. price

  • +2

If this is not esim only I would bite

    • +2

I nearly impulse buy'd an iPhone 17e to go with the MacBook Neo when it released, but eSIM was what stopped me then too.

I don't have a problem with eSIM, but I bounce between phones quite a bit and it's just easier to plug and play. I know transferring eSIM has got easier, but it's never going to be easier than a straight swap.

      • did my first esim yesterday when transferring from Optus to Belong and all done in 15 minutes - so smooth and easy

      • +1

17e is not eSIM only; it also has a SIM tray, as does the rest of the 17 lineup excl Air.

        • Son of a bitch, it may actually have a proper SIM. Some countries don't, and some sites say Australia doesn't, Apple don't say much of anything on their site. The hype is gone, would have just been fun to get a computer and phone on day of release, but I'll withold further comment on the eSIM stuff until I have triple checked. Apologies, my dude.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: IIRC, US, Canada, parts of the Middle East are the eSIM only nations at this point in time

Australia (so far) is not eSIM only, but with the Air being eSIM only I think it's entirely possible now…

    • Likewise, especially on prepaid plans, eSIM limits the choices.

      • Tbf there are many options now for prepaid eSIMs. Amaysim, Boost, Belong, Felix Mobile, just to name a few.

Every network should have at least 3/4 MVNOs with eSIM support at this stage, coming from someone who frequently jumps plans across prepaid MVNOs. Tho found that Telstra MVNOs have more options for eSIMs vs Optus or TPG.

        • Not Coles Mobile yet.

Do you know any long expiry 5G prepaid under $200 includes international call and not on Vodafone network?

  • +4

    999.99

  • Found out OnePass 5x FlyBuys points at OW only applies to C&C, any idea if order through phone for price beat and collect in store qualifies 5x points?

  • Is there a deal on the 17 that people here keep mentioning? Considering getting a new phone for my wife as a gift but don't know anything about iPhones

  • +1

    HOLD!!!

  • None of the Officeworks near me has it in stock, do I need to call them or go in store to make an order? Assume I’m paying with the ultimate gift card for additional 10% off

  • I see these often on marketplace for $900- $950 in near new condition.

  • +3

Lots of misinformation on the air battery. It is on par with IP 17 while being larger and lighter. Heavy 4/5G usage will see the Air pull ahead of the IP 17 significantly. This is a 10h+ SOT phone (non-gaming), it has flaws but battery isn’t one of them. Also keep in mind smaller battery capacity means your powerbank can top up the air more times.

    • can't reason with those. they are on an agenda that this iphone is trash. so any cons are amplified like battery, camera. any pros are ignored like bigger screen, pro chip. they will it doesn't matter any way.

  • Reburb'd air is now ~$1070 on green gadgets ebay using APR12 discount code.

  • +1

I grabbed one for free at Jb with the $99 plan today. Managed to get them to throw in a case & screen protector. Went for the Stealth black. Pretty happy so far

    • Can I ask, are you thinking of cancelling the plan? Could you please confirm the cancellation amount when you get there (if you do)? Thanks!

      • If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term.

        • Yes! Sorry, I probably wasn’t clear enough. I’m aware there’s the cancellation fee of ~$800 ($766 or so?) + potential for $300 on top for the bonus voucher. The critical info suggests the $300 is only for promotional periods, so I’m curious to know if it changes either because of year or device, or is it pretty flat now at ~$1k

          • @Blah00: Sorry I am not going to cancel as I actually needed a phone on Telstra. She did make a point to say that the voucher will need to be paid back pro Rota if I cancel within the 24 months and the actual voucher was written up as $1299, so I would think that loophole has been closed

  • "Limitations are the single camera (which still takes good pictures) aka iphone 16 pro max and only one speaker. Apart from that, it is a great buy. It's a great iPhone; I swapped the other day from an iPhone 16 Pro Max. It has all-day battery life."
