  • I'll just sum up the comments so you don't have to

Pro EV comments - 'ive done 100,000km of driving and saved 20k in fuel, instant torque good, service intervals longer, 30 moving parts vs 1500+

anti ev - cheap chinese junk, battery will cost 10k in 2035 when you replace it, diesel powered chargers!!! I drive 900km without stopping and piss in an old coke bottle, what if there is a blackout! resale value bad, only good for now cos fuel is 2 bucks

    • You forgot the CCP part 😂

      • 'president xi will send out a wifi ota signal that will shut down your EV so you cant go to centerlink and your ndis support sessions'

        • There is a hidden 5G tower in the roof that will give you autism after 3 months.

        • Biden passed the infrastructure bill, 3 years ago in the USA, where all vehicles manufactured in the USA from 2026? 2027? onwards must have a remote 'kill-switch', for authorities to be able shutdown the car.

          EDIT:
New Technology Mandate in Infrastructure Bill Could Significantly Cut Drunken Driving Deaths

but but China bad…they're just weeks away from invading Taiwan. US will never invade…Taiwan which makes them the good guys.

            CCP bot signing off.

            • @Creamsoda: Why would US invade Taiwan, it’s about business and $$$, America is rebuilding their IC manufacturing industry , and if china invaded Taiwan TSMC doesn’t get access to etching technology they need in the future so it’s not going to leapfrog tech, for china its unfinished civil war business and national pride and unification, it’s not about $$$$$.

              • @garage sale: The Joke in summary:
                China wants to annex Taiwan
                USA wants to annex Greenland
                The End.

          • @whyisave:

must have a remote 'kill-switch', for authorities to be able shutdown the car.

Very similar functionality has been available in the US for more than a decade, although it wasn't mandated for all vehicles. See OnStar on Wikipedia.

      • Road User Charges are incoming!!

      • long live supreme leader kim jong un

    • Absolutely nailed it mate.

      • also resale sucks because no one will want a 3yr old china ev

in the real world a 2022 MG4 bought for $27,900 is now $31,990

          • @Brick Tamland: Go see for yourself on carsales. Second hand EV market right now is crazy booming.

            • @mrvaluepack: Except for Nissan Leaf’s, owners have jacked up the price to ensure they still can’t sell them, even in an oil crisis.

              • @Brick Tamland: Owners of Leafs with the helping hand of Nissan headquarters creating an obnoxiously high price for brand new ones.

                Going strong since 2012: … buy a Leaf … for around $52,000

        • Right now, maybe.
But that's because of the current situation, people are panic buying.
Normally no, resale is abysmal for Chinese vehicles.
Also, that is what people are asking on carsales, not what people are actually paying. People trying to profit off the crisis.
Remember when masks and toilet paper went up in price.
If I were you I'd sell it now, this is the most you'll ever get for a Chinese EV.

          • @Tamagotchi Breeder: I have been monitoring the ads, and I can tell you ive seen listing prices increase $1000 every 3 days and then ad will be gone within a week. When i call up, they say its already sold. So current ads are what people are paying.

            • @mrvaluepack: Like I said in my previous post, this is a once in a lifetime situation caused by the current global situation. You can't use this as a baseline for pricing or resale value, try looking at any data prior to the last month and it will tell you the real truth.
Like I said masks, disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, Covid-19 RAT tests, how much are they all worth outside of the pandemic?

Based on your current resale projections, ($1,000 every 3 days) an MG4 should be worth $90,000 in the next few months. I think you should sell any property you own and invest in some CH-EVS.

And unless you speak to every single seller and ask them their actual final sale price, my statement stands, it's still speculation (to a degree). I wish I got every last dollar I asked for when selling second hand cars or anything in general.

              • @Tamagotchi Breeder:

Also, that is what people are asking on carsales, not what people are actually paying.

I was responding to this comment ^^^ I saw a batch 2023 mg zs ev go on sale $30990 3 weeks ago, gone in less than 24 hours. Now newest batch is listing for $35k. Go figure.

Based on your current resale projections, ($1,000 every 3 days) an MG4 should be worth $190,000 in the next few months.

Are you stupid? You think everything is a linear equation? Of course I know there will be a ceiling for everything.

And finally unless you speak to every single seller and ask them their actual final sale price, my statement stands, it's still speculation (to a degree).

Did you not read my post? I actually called the sellers to chat with them. I called one of the MG ZS EV sellers who had 4 instock in the morning to enquire, and in the afternoon i called back to try and make a deposit and they were all gone.

          • @Tamagotchi Breeder: Resell values for Japanese car are actually abysmal in real value terms, as you fork out 40% more money with less power, more expensive fuel and basic interior.

          • @Tamagotchi Breeder:

Normally no, resale is abysmal for Chinese vehicles.

            Bugger!!

I keep missing those abysmal resell prices for Chinese vehicles … always too high … when and where are the dead cheap ones, please!!!!

Paying cash, short rego ok, low range ok too.

            • @LFO: I've owned 2 ICE MGs in the past few years and lost a load of money on each, way more than any Japanese car ive ever owned.
Yes all EVs are artificially inflated now. You are all skirting around all of my previous points.
Anyway you can learn the hard way like I did, after this artificial once in a lifetime EV bubble settles down let's see how they hold their value.
I want to see these posts at the end of this year, enjoy and find out first hand like I did.

            • @LFO: So, the short and long of it is that you are paying cash

          • @Tamagotchi Breeder: I was going to buy used china EV, byd seal, wasn’t much cheaper used than new, less than 10%, the battery life for most people will outlast the car which will be sold because it feels old, cracked seats, etc the mileage life of batteries is now crazy long.

        • Given a 2025 one is $30,990 sounds odd.

          Also:

          2023 is $27,500

          2022 is $24,990

    • When my car has more than 35 moving parts I get a headache.

    • EV is also quieter

      • anti ev: but you can't hear them coming

        • another: EVs lack soul.

          • @Creamsoda: And don't forget: no switches to flick on and off!!

        • That was actually a problem. EVs are now required to make artificial noise or something under a certain speed!

        • Pedestrians in car parks don't get out of the way

          • @Caped Baldy: Then you'll need a bigger hammerhorn

      • How dead silent do you even want your car to be?

    • Somehow someone will mention Tesla and Elon musk and then it will turn political

      • I bet Trump's involved somewhere too 😅

        • And if all fails bring Adolf and the Nazi era …

    • You forgot the higher insurance bit.

      • As soon as the Iran war began, every Murdoch newspaper has been talking about the price of EV insurance 😂

      • In my case it wasn't that bad. Old family car - Skoda Octavia - insured value 23k was $700. Bought a second hand Model Y, insured value 45 and insurance is $1150.

      • I was expecting more for insurance. Turns out our MG was cheaper to insure than our 2009 kia.

      • My Ora is $860 per annum with $1000 excess

        • how do you like your ora? Good and bads after a while of ownership?

          • @tete: Mostly good.

            Good

            • Very peppy off the line and in 80-100 overtaking
            • Very well built compared to other small EVs like the MG4 or the Aion UT
            • Grip on roads is great, though I have upgraded my tyres to Pirelli Powergys
            • Has basic physical HVAC controls so its not all on the screen
            • Can easily fit a space saver spare under the boot floor
            • Super cheap to run and service

            Not so good

            • ELK is a PITA. Depending on the destination, I typically turn it off each time I start it
            • Would be great if more switches for HVAC system were available, like a rocker to turn fan speed up\down and temp up\down
            • Wish boot proper was a bit bigger, but I guess thats what the family SUV is for
            • No wiper on rear window
            • GWM service (well at least the one at Berwick) is not so great.
    • Thankyou for saving me from the other 65 comments (at time of writing) in this thread 🙏

    • great comments @Mortgagetightass !

I always say you are buying technology or a computer. If that laptop you bought 5 years ago is worth something you are lucky. Just drive the crap out of the golf cart and enjoy it.

Toyota CEO on Chinese competition: "Unless things change, we will not survive. I want everyone to acknowledge this sense of crisis."

Honda CEO on Chinese competition after recently visiting the country: "We have no chance against this."

      • GWM Chariman: "In reality, there is still a significant gap between Chinese automakers, including Great Wall Motors, and those excellent companies."

        • Smart to still position themselves as an underdog.

    • how did you do the anti EV argument without mentioning "woke" or one nation?

      Imposter!

    • Pls keep the anti ev comments coming, they're propping up the sale price of my diesel!

    • you forgot that EVs are just disposable appliances you replace every 5 years

  • "Begun, the EV Clone War has."

i like it how this is just an ora cat on stilts and somehow gwm only have that title pic and nothing else

    • Ora 5 has bigger dimensions and boot space

    • The Ora 5 is considerably larger than the Ora 3, in particular the boot. Also it has a spare!

      • Has a spare in some markets, not all.
27.2cm longer and 8mm wider isn't really considerable larger.
They still both have the same feminine styling which will discourage a lot of customers. Was such an easy fix to make the front end more mainstream and it'd sell in droves.

  • why does it have to be so darn cute

    • its because the original design spec for the 'oral cat' hatch was to appeal to women… which is partly why it sold like shit

      https://www.drive.com.au/news/2026-gwm-ora-5-price-and-specs…

even that looks very very feminine

      • Which is the manly SUV lined up in the school zone?

    • It looks like a Frankenstein'd Mini body with a Porsche front.

I personally find it extremely ugly, looks are subjective though.

      • Agree, I'm a bit fan of some of the Chinese designed vehicles but this is just straight out ugly

    • Because it was designed by former Porsche designer Emanuel Derta

  • If you stuck a Porsche badge on it you could fool a few people

    • Which says more about those people than anything else. Looks like a combination of rejected designs by Porche and Mini got merged into this. In darker colours i think it might look tolerable.

      • Exactly my thoughts. A Frankenstein'd Mini x Porsche

        • The best of both in a single car.

  • My memory connected to this: Mr Bean Mini

  • Very girly looking car, but I can't deny it, it's actually also very good looking.

    • you know what is crazy? girls buy cars too. I am assuming by girly you mean things that girls/women like?

      • Do you know who you are talking to?

        • i've heard of them before

    • I love my girly looking Ora 3, brings out the feminine side of me.

  • I think to make ev really mass popular, drive away prices for BEV's should be:
    1. WLTP range 220-300km , ~40kWh battery - 22-25k AUD
    2. WLTP range 350-450km , ~60-70kWh battery - 30kAUD
    3. Anything above, I will leave the selling price to manufacturer depending upon the specs , range and battery - let them charge any premium but if the manufacturers can deliver in above selling price range, Australian public would be a clear winner and also, helping nation by saving forex on fuel imports.

    • i would love to live in your world but it seems 40kW batteries and sub 300km seems to be death

look at thow the Honda One EV will bomb like shit

we may be close to the 60kWh 400km range at $31,900 because isnt the Gac UTI Aion already there?

if they cut all the bullshit screens and shit you could probably do it

      • Why do you have a Urinary Tract Infection?

  • Looks like an ugly little frog. Temu Porche influence would be too kind.

    • yeah this car looks ugly for me lol

    • The chief designer of modern Porsches designed the Ora.

  • Great car if you couldn't care less about what a car looks like

Reminds me of when the Hyundai's made the Getz. Horrible looking things but the grandma's were all over it because of the price.

    • I think it looks great, like someone squished a Porsche.

    • Couldn't agree more, although I think this is way uglier than a Getz. More along the line of Excels

  • Anyone found a good review for this? Does it have a heat pump and is it LFP. Then if ordered is refund available if test drive isn’t great?

    • check the reviews in Thailand, the same car launched this month over there already. the PDF brochure with the specs is here https://www.gwm.co.th/content/dam/gwm/pages/th/en/model/ora-…

battery type says lithium ion 58.3 kwh on page 1

      • they are doing the equivalent of releasing a preorder for a game that they havent given preview copies to reviewers….. so buyers will be the first to beta test it

i mean i could trawl the chinese forums for mainlainder reviews but i dont give a shit about this car

  • To each their own. But to me , its the car equivalent of bloke in a wig.

Though cannot fault that price in the current climate! If you like the style and need an EV, then this is your car.

    • What do you mean by that first sentence?

      • It’s not masculine enough for them.

  • Reminds me of the old Nissan Micra but as a crossover

  • It looks good in some of the photos and was It was designed and styled by a former Porsche designer (Emanuel Derta).
