          • @montorola: Mate I've got medication for this shit and even I don't get that excited.

I definitely want some of what he's havin.

          • @montorola: Make that two

            • @jeimuzu: Sorry, it's backordered until May.

          • @montorola: i usually drink 1.25 litres of energy drink a day, but i'm coming off it to save money and drinking coffee instead!!! its a different HIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^^DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

      • Glad I could help mate!

  • says "Sorry the location you entered is not a valid delivery location. Please contact customer service for more information or change the delivery location." what should i do? Can i pricematch with good guys or another retailer you reckon?

    • I just called up Good Guys and they price matched it, didnt have much stock left *in Victoria, had to pay exra $5 for delivery!! ^^D so awesome!!! I probably prefer buying from good guys, they have been really good with returns and issues with stuff i buy from them so far. said will arrive to me next week probably!!!

  • This is really good but if you want to get the same dolby vision compatibility using the am6b+ with a coreelec fork is still what I use and you can link an add on with a debrid service which is my favorite way to watch movies.

    • I just bought the Panasonic UHD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB820GN-K now. not sure what that is but that sounds awesome! please link thanks HaydosK^^)

    • Just curious - why post this on a blu-ray player post?

Also - what's the benefit of CoreElec? Is it an android OS (or something else?)

I just use Stremio on my telly and it works fine for debrid service streaming, and otherwise use my blu ray player (Panasonic for DV) for my hard copies.

      • Because Blu-ray players can play back fel dolby vision and that's the reason why I bought one but later on they discovered that you can use this combo to get fel dolby vision without a Blu-ray player. there are some others but they aren't as well supported but they use a very similar chip to the one in the am6b+ and all have to use coreelec because Android os doesn't work well with dolby vision and isn't as easy to customize. Coreelec is Kodi ontop of Linux which means it's faster than android os and you can customize it on the interface and in the code so they can enable this stuff

        • Fair - my A95K and UB-450 combo does the trick. Only annoying thing is I have to manually set the player output to 1080p to ensure the TV does the (superior) upscaling on non-4K content, then switch it back for 4K.

          • @Thiefsie: Right. that box is more for backups and piracy but you can set it so you don't have to do that manually if you want lol

    • I have reached an age that I have no idea what you just said :)

What's the easiest way to watch Dolby Vision 4k stuff on an OLED TV without wifi?

Can I just grab a player like this and order some old school blu-ray disks?

      • Yep, it'll be plug and play. This player (and the UB-450) will automatically toggle Dolby Vision for supported 4K's, and upscale normal Blu-rays.

      • This is still the best budget player for dolby vision bluray discs but some people have debrid services and want a way to play back dolby vision content as well as a Blu-ray player and the am6b+ with coreelec is one of the only options. Also if you want to watch 4k Dolby vision movies you will need the new school 4k Blu-ray discs which are more expensive than regular Blu-rays but I get them on sale at jbhifi.

        • Ok, I looked it up. Debrid is some sort of torrent service (like popcorn time),

Am6b+ is a device ..and you install coreelec as the media handler?

So you can't just download a 40 odd gb 4k Dolby Vision file and play it through HDMI via a laptop, or simply a USB drive?

      • Just be wary, Dolby Vision is not on all 4K discs. But this player is the best at upgrading Blu-Rays and even DVDs ( though don't expect too much). It also comes with a separate HDMI output for audio only.

        • Just tried to download the LG OLED HDR demo videos from YouTube with saveiotoffline.
          They don't work.
Is it possible to download 4k hdr from YouTube?

          • @tunzafun001: I've never tried to download anything from YouTube. Just add it to your watch list or save for later. Then go to history. Not sure if that helps.

  • Wonder why most Blu-ray players including this one, support 3d discs when no tv manufacturer has made a 3d TV for many years. Gives me false hope that one day they will include it again in TVs. I have still hung on to the Lg C6. It does have screen burn in too now.

    • This player came out in 2018, it's still considered one of the best 4K blu-ray players, and there hasn't been a new model released as far as I'm aware. 2018 was when 3D discs were still a thing.

      • 3d was already dead by 2018

    • I still have a 3D TV and use the model up to play my discs. A lot of movie enthusiasts use projectors which also still support 3D movies. The latest Avatar movie fire and ash is also releasing on 3D blu-ray in a few months over in the US, UK and some other markets.

    • samsung sells 3D monitors

  • Love the player, hate the remote. Great price though!

    • Agreed! I ended up hacking mine apart to put a bit of cardboard behind the Netflix button because I was so sick of pushing it in the dark and aborting the bluray I was watching.

      • Did the same with mine using tape
        Absolutely necessary

    • You can buy a knock off UB9000 remote for $15 from eBay or Amazon or AliExpress etc. Much better experience.

      • GREAT IDEA RANDOLPH!!!!!! becareful when buying out there guys.. some remotes are "no backlight" and some do have backlight!!! with backlight is better! i ended up getting one around $19 aud from china will take a month to arrive, but says it has backlight! Thanks!

  • Been wanting this for a few weeks, never bit the bullet.
    Have now.
    Thanks!

  • Just as heads up, this player is very sensitive to damaged disks.

    • My current Panasonic UHD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB820GN-K lens is currently playing up and has trouble playing 100gig 4k dics which seems to be a common problem.

    • Can't be any worse than my Sony X800 player surely

      • My Sony x700 has been solid, more reliable than my Panasonic. I guess I'm one of the luck Sony owners, not a lucky Panasonic owner instead

        • It's a shame the X700 doesn't have automatic Dolby Vision switching, I bought one for my parents and it's quicker than my UB-450.

        • Tried watching the Super Mario Movie the other day and the player just wouldn't recognise the disc as a movie disc. Kept coming up as data disc and didn't matter what I did it wouldn't play it. We have watched that disc before no problems though. Sometimes it freezes and even just stops completely. It was good when we first got it but lately has been terrible.

    • Mine is failing to play all 4k disk's after 12 months. There's a lot of users in the same boat on forums. My ps5 sitting next to it plays the same disk's no problem. Even brand new disk's out of the box come up with read errors.

      • The Panasonic has great sound and video playback, but not reliable long term. Google search will show lots of complaints.

      • Mine played all 4K discs fine but started failing to play standard Blu-rays. Since it was out of warranty, I fixed it by adjusting the laser.

        If you don't mind tinkering:

3 screws to remove the top plastic cover (watch out you don't lose the plastic bits for the power and eject buttons)
2 screws on either side and slide the metal top cover back
3 small screws on the disc drive top cover which also has 2 plastic clips near the front
Turn the tuning screw for the Blu-ray laser (marked BD) counterclockwise a tiny bit

I don't have photos but it was this comment from Reddit that prompted me to try:
        https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/comments/18pd30o/comment/m…

  • Do Good Guys beat the price or just match it ? My current Panasonic UHD Blu-Ray Player DP-UB820GN-K lens is currently playing up and has trouble playing 100gig 4k dics

    • i asked if they could price match, didnt try price beat, didnt know you could ask that. They didnt haven any stock in nearby stores to me in victoria, but had 1 in stock in a store on the otherside of the city they said they could get the store to ship to me. these are my order details:

      Order details
      Ready for despatch
      $455.00
Panasonic 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player

      1 item
      Preparing order
      $5.00
      Small Item Deliveries Via Store

      • I could be wrong, but I'm sure they do beat by 5%

        • There isn't an exact number but I'm sure they know how far they can push it.

    • they're not really. tried jb deal to include the 30 coupon and they said 'best we can do is 700'. think they did the backorder excuse.

tried good guys, they say because it's an online store, best they can do was 650 odd

i pointed out that it doesn't say that anywhere in their policy, they closed the chat.

maybe calling up is possible, but i wanted to pay with gift cards for more of saving. not sure if you can pay with gift cards over the phone (not likely). i doubt they give you a link to pay online either.

not sure i want to waste anymore time, i've already got one but could do with another one. paid $443 in 2022.

      • yo. when i called up and they price matched, and said they'd ship to me for $5 extra, they found my online account by recognizing the mobile number i called on. I was then given a sms link which took me into a web browser checkout screen, already logged into my online account linked to my mobile, with options to choose how to pay (credit card, zip etc), but i can't remember if there was option to put in coupons or codes on that screen, sorry mate. ACTUALLY I JUST RETRIED CLICKING THE SMS LINK AND YES IT IS A CHECKOUT, AND YES IT HAS A TICK BOX WHICH SAYS NEXT TO IT "Apply Gift card, 90 Day store Cash or Store Credit: ENTER NUMBER, ENTER PIN or check balance" and the the APPLY button! *only thing is, i dont know if you can apply multiple gift cards, but maybe once you press apply to one gift card, it will allow you to enter a new gift card details to apply again, not sure about that. probably best to call up and just say you have multiple gift cards, and will it allow you to apply them all in the checkout

        • ok i called the number and got a 455 cart tied to a local store that may or may not have stock.

but i'm not sure if i am getting a better deal as i don't have a gift card for the total amount only a fraction of it. so the $30 sign up bonus with appliances online may still be cheaper but ~1 month wait and no warranty. might try head in store and pay via multiple gift cards. but then i'm wasting petrol, but OTOH i'm getting it today.

no idea really, not sure i really care tbh

  • Forgive my ignorance but how does a dedicated Blu-ray player compare against just using a console like the PS5 or even the Xbox One S which could be picked up second hand for less than this?

    • Consoles don't support Dolby Vision playback (AFAIK Xbox's only support it for streaming)

      • Which is insane considering it’s available for games on the PS5. Apparently the licensing costs pennies per unit but Sony won’t include it.

        • Maybe not so cheap or something else going on considering neither of the two have it. Perhaps you should make the argument that Sony wants to sell you a dedicated unit so purposefully didn’t include it but MS has pitched their console as a media unit not just games.

        • I'm pretty sure dolby doesn't licence dolby vision fel support on any devices besides Blu-ray players. I don't think this is a Xbox or PlayStation issue. You also have to use hardware that has capability to decode dual layer fel which they don't have im sure so it's not just a license they have to pay.

    • I just use my Xbox Series X because my Samsung TV only supports HDR10+ and there's not many of my movies that support that.

Tempting purchase but not worth the ROI at the moment.

    • This player does a much better job upscaling older content (DVDs at 480p or Blurays at 1080p) to 4K. Also it handles triple layer discs much better. I use a Series X in my office to watch movies on the pleb TV and some discs it has a massive struggle with and refuses to finish or has a lot of dropped frames. Congo and Flash Gordon are the main ones ive had issues with. This player has no issues. it also does Dolby Vision and has dual HDMI outputs. So originally I had an older AV receiver so I could decode Dolby True HD or DTS MA on this and send the 5.1 PCM to my 15 year old AV receiver that couldn't decode those formats while the other output sent 4K to the TV. Another thing is this unit is very easy to mod for region free playback.

Anyway I am a total cinema snob. This player is awesome. At this price its a steal (I am pretty sure I paid double this many years ago). Handles any disc without much fuss (I have only had 2 discs out of hundreds it refused to play and taht was due to some pretty deep gouges on the discs). I use this thing every other day and it has been reliable

    • The Xbox series X is a reliable player but you have to use the controller or Xbox app as a remote which is crap and 4K discs spin so fast it sounds like a washing machine is in spin cycle it's so loud.

How loud is the Panasonic with 4K discs?

  • I have this. Everything looks great, but the interface is a bit dated.

There's also a region free firmware out there, but it's a bit finicky to install.
    https://www.avforums.com/threads/lets-try-again-to-put-the-f…

    • Note that only a fraction of 4K blu rays have region protection, it’s more of a thing for standard blurays.

      • Well yeah but there is also way more DVDs and Blu-rays out there than 4k. It's very valid to want a region free player

    • Love this unit - yes can be a bit finnicky with dodgy discs, but as posted back in 2024 below, can be effectively jailbroken which opens up lots of customisation.

Great unit and amazing quality on my LG OLED. I recently flashed the firmware using this guide which is also discussed on AV Forums search regionfreedom; and it worked a charm!

    • Apparently just pressing STOP then rapidly tapping TOP MENU 5–7 times when the region error screen appears bypass's the region lock - I recently got an 820 and have yet to try

  • Bought this way back in 2022 at around $423.00 + $8 shipping. So definitely a bargain and a really good player, as others have said the player doesn't like damaged discs so make sure you clean and store them correctly.

Had a few 4k disc that needed to be returned due to the player not able to read them or would skip. Not the issue of the player though.

  • Thinking of trying physical discs again. I have a 55 inch LG C1. Unsure if I should buy this. Are there any movies that are superior on an LG C1 55 inch with this player?

    • That's a bit of a loaded question..

      Define superior?

Blu rays are significantly less compressed than streaming services. A 1080p blu ray most of the time will look and sound better than a 4k streamed movie, hdr or not.

If you're running a budget sound bar or the TV speakers blu ray may not be for you, so it really depends on your setup and use case…

If you're STARTING fresh, sure it's like one of (if not the?) best player currently.. But it's an expensive hobby ultimately. But at least you'll be able to watch your content anytime!

Personally, I have an older blu ray player I pinched from my dad for 1080p blu rays. I've got a ps5 pro for 4k blu rays if needed (I don't have many) but I already have a shelf worth of blu rays and roughly 2 of DVDs.

I also now have multiple shelves of CDs..

If you're willing to buy used, go op shops, etc it's pretty quick and viable to rebuild a physical media library.

Some will say OLEDs make older stuff look great, or really show poor encoding or colour work..

Tldr ymmv and you need to define 'superior' and how far down the rabbit hole you wanna go!

      • Does anyone know someone who would know some gorgeous-sounding speakers to go with my 55 inch LG C1? Something balanced and warming. I like when mids get paid proper attention to so it's not too loud and sharp and bassy. I don't have much space, nor a lot of money

    • Some 4K's are substantial upgrades over Blu-rays, some are virtually identical, and a few are arguably downgrades (Terminator 2 being an infamous example).

I get the 4K over regular Blu-ray if it has at least 2/3 of these:
      - Native 4K instead of a 2K upscale
      - HDR
      - Spatial audio

I usually check Bluray.com for the above info. IMO HDR is the biggest difference with 4K's.

      • The movie being native 4k doesn't actually matter. When you look at the size of the 2k masters which are uncompressed they look way better than any compressed 4k movie you get on a Blu-ray disc. Then after that the high quality upscaling and the compression that happens after closes any clear quality gap between a native 4k and 2k upscale. Also regular Blu-ray has dolby atmos and dtsx also.

        • @HaydosK Correct, it's just a general rule of thumb that I follow - saves me from "needing" to upgrade all of my Blu-rays to 4K's.

          • @S Baldrick: I would say it's a bad criteria. Almost all have HDR and atmos and dtsx can be on regular Blu-ray so that just leaves 2k to 4k which is not really an issue after it's compressed to fit on a disc. You can have a movie that has all of these things also and it can look terrible. I would personally watch videos and look at screenshots of the movies and see if they are worth buying and also looking at reviewers on YouTube for a subjective take on the quality of the transfer.

          • @S Baldrick: Also just to prove it more the movie you talk about being bad fits 2 of your criteria as it's hdr10 and a native 4k scan.

            • @HaydosK: I should've been clearer sorry, I usually default to buying new 4K's over new Blu-rays - I'm referring to upgrading my existing Blu-ray collection.

90% of my existing Blu-ray collection don't have Atmos/DTS X. The ones that do are recent purchases, and those are because there's no 4K yet (eg. The Big Short). The only other time I pick Blu-rays over 4K's is when the transfer isn't to my taste (eg. excessive DNR).

I upgraded my X-Men 1 and 2 Blu-rays to 4K because they fit two of the criteria (native 4K and HDR), whereas First Class and Days of Future Past are 2K upscales with HDR, and the same audio as the Blu-ray (so only one of the criteria). Reviews state that First Class 4K is barely an upgrade, whereas DoFP is (allegedly) only an upgrade for half the film. The latter already looks fantastic on Blu-ray, so I don't see the value in double-dipping.

I didn't mention any films until this comment, not sure what you think I was referring to.

      • yeah agreed. Cameron's films are notoriously upscaled with a ton of noise reduction. Weirdly the first Terminator has tons of grain and is crispy unlike T2, Aliens and True Lies

Also yeah, bluray.com is awesome and I use the app to scan barcodes of stuff so i don't double buy (it also lets me know what releases have what cuts of films on them). Some releases it shows the bitrate too which can be like 4-5 times over what streaming tops out at

    • Unless you have some really outdated tv any good quality 4k tv will look the same mostly (besides brightness and other issues) so it's not about what panel but about the movie. I think 4k is necessary if you like watching older films because the jump in quality from early Blu-ray encodes and dvds to 4k remasters from film is just crazy. A lot more effort is put into making sure the colour grading is correct and retain grain and details from the original source if it was remastered by a competent team but sometimes it isn't so you should check reviews before buying a specific movie. New movies it can help sometimes but it depends on the master and If the HDR grade is impressive. Some movies look exactly the same on 1080p Blu-ray because there is 200 nit masters which is almost sdr with the color being the only real improvement

    • Thanks for the replies everyone. I think Reaper X22 summed it up well. It’s basically an expensive hobby.

I assume most of us, like myself, are already paying $65 a month for internet plus a couple of streaming services, so that’s plenty. I’m keen to watch some of my old DVDs, but I’m not keen to find more storage space for more DVDs.

Maybe I’ll just borrow/pinch a DVD player from a family member for a while. That’s a much more inexpensive way to waste time.

  • Excuse me, but having Nvidia shield pro and got Blu-ray quality on some movies. What's the main difference between this and my setup. It also got Dolby vision. Beside massive files.

    • The shield has no support for dolby vision fel and has a few bugs when it comes to playing Dolby vision.

      • Thanks. Wasn't sure the main difference. For us its a massive difference in quality since we got a new tcl c755. Old one was 8 or so years old.

        • Oh yeah it's not something most people notice but most people can't seem to tell the difference between a DVD and a Blu-ray so idk.

  • Already have the 420 version that is working well. Tempted to hoard this one but I really have no use for it except as a back up..

I have a Samsung oled so don't need the Dolby Vision.

    • I’m in the same boat! Very tempting in case I ever get approval from the wife to upgrade our TV.

  • Just contacted JB and they price matched $455 plus $11 delivery to Brisbane by 17/4

    • I tried Good Guys, they refused. Said their cost price was ~$650 and that's the best they can do. JB worked for me as well, $455 matched.

  • So we don't need to pay for a subscription for this thing?

    • Nope

  • $459 price matched at Good Guys, including $4 delivery.

    • $459? It is $409. Edit. Ahh, you went early and then it dropped further… sorry

      • Yes, ichie trigger finger. I cancelled my JB order and ordered at $409 from AOL. Will need to wait until the end of May.

  • good guys no longer price matching apparently

  • Man, I bought a Sony UBPX700 UHD player 2 years ago and it's not been used past it's first 2mths lol

EDIT - well it seems I have a bad grasp on time. I bought it Thu, 17 Dec 2020. Not realising it's been that long is a little troubling.

  • Planet Earth & Planet Earth 2 are a complete delight watching nature in 4K. It changes your perspective when you have 4K content using the right player such as this.

  • $409 Now. Just bought one. Why so cheap, is there a newer model coming out ?

    • They kindly refunded me the difference since I paid the $455 yesterday.

      • appliances online refunded the difference? sounds good!

i'm sooo glad i procrastinated last night and didn't jump on my $455 gg's quote, i saw it was valid for 7 days so didn't rush.

the question is: how low will it go?

        • Yes. Through their chat.
