  • Fttp? And what is CGNAT?

    • +43

If you don't know then you don't need it

      • +9

No consumer "needs" CG-NAT. There's nothing but minor downsides for the consumer.

ISPs use CG-NAT to conserve and manage the dwindling supply of unique IPv4 addresses - CG-NAT allows them to share a single IP address among several customers.

        • +2

I host a homelab which allows me to use Plex or other services remotely. Yes I can use Tailscale or other VPN to bypass CGNAT, but having a dedicated dynamic IP makes things easier. Also makes it easier if you are on private trackers. And lastly, my VPSs have no SSH hardened with the exception of my IP being whitelisted which is a security risk under CGNAT (however small).

          • +1

@nottoobright: If you are with Aussie BroadBand, you can call them up and they'll just turn off CGNAT on your account. It won't cost you anything but you won't get a static IP either. You'll just an assigned IP on each router reboot/periodically. You can use Dynamic DNS with that.

          • @nottoobright: Going to need to use a VPS with either Headscale or configured as a VPN hub with hub & spoke topology to get a VPN running decently with a device behind CGNAT.

Sounds like you could manage that, I see a lot of people running tailscale & home media servers that really couldn't.

        • +5

Surprised we haven't switched to IPv6 yet..

        • +1

And often suck $5/month for those wanting a static IP addy.

    • +6

Check here to see if you have FTTP or can change from nbn FTTN/FTTC to FTTP.

Some providers use CG-NAT which works fine for most users. CG-NAT can break remote access to some home security cameras, some home automation products, home server like a Plex server, NAS or if you want to host online P2P games. When you turn off CG-NAT you will be able to use remote access and host online P2P games again.

If your home security cameras and automation products use a cloud server you will not be affected by CG-NAT.

FTTP - Fibre To The Premises
No CGNAT - No CGNAT means your internet connection is using a public, unique IP address, instead of being shared with other users.

        This brings me joy:

        Existing customers:
If youโ€™re already on our 500/50 plan, the price reduction is applied automatically. No action required.

I was with my previous ISP for 20+ years, if you keep up this kind of service - I'm happy to be a long term customer. Not a fan of having to change providers every X months to chase offers.

        • +21

Wouldn't be fair not to pass on a deal to all customers. it's so wrong not to do that!!

          • @carboncomms: Exetel has been charging me 99 for 500/50 plan
Website shows $80 but Iโ€™m not given that price. If what you have mentioned is true then Iโ€™ll be carboncomms customer soon.

Come on over to the dark side, George is amazing and so is CC

    • +3

@Carbon Comms - You need to be transparent and state there is a "NBN Service Transfer Fee" of $5.xx charged on your first bill! YOU HAVE NOT addressed this from prev deal. Even though most end up staying due to long term savings…. YOU still need to let people know of this charge to avoid the … wTheck is this $99.22 charge from "telco Payment Se Tiabxxxxx" only to find out its from CC (expecting it to be $85)!

      • +1

If its $85 + $5.50 how does it end up at $99.22 even if you have a credit card fee in it?

        • +1

it looks like.. pro rata charge from 25-27th Feb.. then start of billing 28th FEB… But there is an addition NBN Service Transfer Fee of $5.45

I mean i am Ok with the 5.45 if they tell us upfront.. its just annoying you get a surprise debit notification of an amount you don't expect from vendor Telco Payment Se TIAB 4XXXXXXX. I had to manually investigate it wasn't a scammer.

  • Perth pop?

    • +2

No Perth POP yet. POP expansion within the next 6 months

      • +2

Apart from the 60ms latency, does a NSW POP have any other negative effects?

  • Any updates on PoP expansion and IPv6?

  • can we churn on the weekend without drama?

    • +2

      Yes you can!

    • You can churn at 10:30 at night. George is amazing

      • +1

        yes he is!

  • +1

Can anyone comment on how Carbon Comms compare to Exetel? I'm on Exetel with the same price but the static ip and no cgnat is tempting. Worried about connection stability and ping for gaming. On fttp.

    • +5

We've been around since 2018. if you want to chat I'm George and you can reach me on 1800101050

Use Carbon Comms for a month. You can always change ISP in a month.

ISP Speed and Price CG-NAT IPv4 and IPv6 Static IP PoP
Exetel 500/50 $80/m Yes (CG-NAT can be turned off for $0) IPv4 and IPv6 Not available for new customers PoP in each state
Carbon Comms 500/50 $79/m No CG-NAT IPv4 only. IPv6 is not available Static IPv4 Sydney PoP
      • Iโ€™m in Syd and with Exetel.
I get 5ms ping playing valorant.
Worth changing to CC to save a buck??? Itโ€™s $12 a year after all ๐Ÿ˜„

        • Exetel has $1 off/referral so you can get 500/50 for $79/m or less. Do you need the Static IP from Carbon Comms?

          • @Twix: no, i got dynamic ip with Exetel by requesting to op out of CG-NAT via their online chat.

        • Support Aussie based

    • +2

Worried about connection stability and ping for gaming.

You're in Sydney according to your profile, so it should be more or less similar to latency on ABB?

      I'm on Exetel

Please note that Exetel/Superloop have a (legally?) questionable 30 day cancellation period. Many have managed to get that waived via support chat by ether threatening complaint + TIO complaint, or citing ACCC fee for no service pages.

      • +1

        Exetel's 500/50 One plan doesn't need 30 days notice. No pro-rata refunds.

        • +2

Wonderful. Their CIS for the One plan contradicts their SFOA then.

Still need to time your port out to just before your plan rollover though.

I changed to Carbon comms about 6 months ago and it's been rock solid. No outages and no network latency variation at all - I'm from Brisbane and I get 13ms pretty much constantly.

My experience has been excellent so far.

      • @arcynum Thank You

  • Is there any ETA for POP in Melbourne? I want to jump on but just waiting for that first.

    • most of existing customers in Melbourne Latency is decent. But same ETA for all POPs within 6 months

      • Can you give some examples of "latency is decent"? Honest question, thanks.

        • I am in Melbourne and have been with Carbon Comms for the past 6 months. No issues really and George is very responsive and always willing to help.

Latency is decent around 25 - 30ms on average.

@VishSunny: Thanks, is that a 250/50 plan? Seems slow if it is this 500/50 plan

            • +1

@chewkl: It's the 250/100 plan. The upload looks slow because my work laptop was uploading some large data sets to my work server. Usually the upload is 90+ mbps

  • Looking around October still for POPs in all states? Looking at your 1000/400 plan for $125.

  • Do you guys block any ports? I am currently with swoop and even though I have a static IP they block 443 and 80, plus a bunch of other UDP ports.

    • +1

Not that I am aware of.

    • +1

You can disable those blocks in the Swoop customer settings. I had the same problem

    • I have self hosted with reverse proxy running and can confirm 443 and 80 are not blocked. Neither is udp 53.

Existing customer here, have been very happy with the service provided. Thanks for the discount ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    • +2

      hahaha more than welcome!!

  • Any special pricing for 1000/100 plan?

    • at the moment no it's $99 ongoing

    • +2

There will be higher latency from Perth to Sydney if that matters to you.

  • +1

No love for opticomm users? ๐Ÿ˜ž

    • +1

@freakymonstah new Opticomm prices coming next week :) what speed are you after?

      • 100/20 please

      • Waiting for this too George ;)

  • +3

I switched to Carbon a few months back (from Aussie broadband). In Brisbane, mostly work from home. No issues with internet since, rock solid service. And cheaper! And with this update cheaper again!!! Would happily recommend
    (No association - just a happy customer :) )

    • @cabler365 Thank You

    • Thanks for your feedback. I have been with ABB for years now and I managed to secure a $20 discount during the Black Friday sale (so I wouldn't churn to another provider). However that discount has now lapsed and ABB has been very subtle in ensuring that they take the original $95 for the plan.

  • Hows sydney speeds?

  • +4

Anyone in Adelaide using them currently with Leaptel Thanks

    • +2

      On the same boat..

      • +1

One of my work colleagues is in Adelaide and he switched to Carbon before I did - he hasn't had issues on Carbon. It was on his recommendation that I switched over myself. Says his ping is is 43ms.

        • Not the greatest at 43ms. Do web pages load quickly or not as snappy?

    • I am in Adelaide and have been with carbon Comms, every time I've speed tested I get the full 500/50 speed, ping is around 42ms.

I think it's been great, no issues with any kind of lag.

      https://www.speedtest.net/result/19072264022

    • Also keen to know this. From previous replies ~40ms is pretty average, currently getting 2-3ms on TPG FTTP

  • Can you connect an FTTN service at this price?

    • 500/50 is not available on nbn FTTN.

Check here to see if you can change from nbn FTTN to FTTP 500/50.

      • Not for many years, even in Australia's capital city. I know 500 isn't available on FTTN, the question was whether or not they can provision an FTTN service at whatever line speed is available, at that price.

        • nbn FTTN
          25/10 $49/m.
          50/20 $75/m.
          100/20 $80/m.
          100/40 $85/m.

  • how much was the price drop?

    • +1

      $1 (was $80/m).

  • I just sent you a chat message on your website, new connection required at a site. I am existing 2000/200 customer. I need a deal

  • thanks
