          the thing is, at what point is something used , what is relative and when repackaged as manufacturer

          Hdd have a serious service life of 3-5 years, this model is released 2020 could be 1 - 5 yo

          When i get the drives from wd seagate they seem to reset the factory smart codes to 0
          Arguably is that a 'new' product. And we should be entitled to expectations of 3-5 y

          Recertified implies the manufacturer considers level of this is guaranteed as 'new' i'd also consider expectation 3-5 y

          Refurbished, sounds like a polish a used product and sell as used in current state of lifecycle

          i have to be honest 3 months would be the relative expectation based on an age of 5 years.
          If they are 4 yo or less i'd expect 1 full year assurances

          The photos suggest 2024 build dates,

    This is a Toshiba MG09 18TB enterprise CMR drive, not a desktop-grade HDD, so the comparison is usually against other local enterprise/refurbished stock rather than consumer drives.

    When you say you fully smart test, anyone can run crystal disk info and hddscan/Victoria for read and writes. Most drives will pass smart tests … Until they don't…

    What's the average power on hours, your threshold for reallocated sectors count,spin retry etc before on selling them?

    Yes price of drives is ridiculous at the moment so these are competitive especially for enterprise grade drives. 3 months seems a little thin on the warranty though

      You’re absolutely right that a simple SMART pass alone doesn’t guarantee long-term reliability, which is why we don’t rely on CrystalDiskInfo screenshots alone.

      Our screening process focuses on:

      clean SMART health
      zero reallocated / pending sectors
      no spin retry or interface CRC concerns
      stable extended read/write surface scan
      no abnormal vibration or spin-up behaviour

      We’re conservative with what we resell, and any drive showing questionable sector behaviour or unstable scan performance is rejected.

      Power-on hours do vary from batch to batch as these come from enterprise decommission stock, so we prefer to judge based on actual health metrics + full scan stability rather than a fixed POH cutoff alone.

      Totally agree that 3 months is on the lighter side, and that’s us trying to be realistic with refurbished enterprise hardware rather than dressing it up with a “marketing warranty”.

      They are used enterprise decommission drives, which is why we describe them as refurbished rather than manufacturer recertified.

      Power-on hours vary by batch, so there isn’t a single fixed number across all units. We focus more on actual SMART health and scan stability rather than POH alone.

      spin-up and vibration behaviour checks
      interface / CRC error review
      full wipe and reinitialisation
      cosmetic clean before packing

      Any unit that shows questionable behaviour during scan or SMART review is excluded from resale.

      So the “refurbished” part here mainly refers to tested, screened, cleaned and requalified for reuse, rather than simply being used drives resold as-is.

      They also come with a 3-month local replacement warranty from Melbourne stock for extra peace of mind.

          they're not alone in these grey-practices though - send out a multimeter for 'calibration', they do exactly the same thing: send in straight back to you with just a pass/fail sticker and still charge you $600 for it

      So lucky got 4 of them before price hike (2 of 18, one 16 and one 14th). Just hope one doesn't fail because won't replace it now and probably run without parity and just do crucial backups to my small nas.

          Nah, 1 year on those. Ultra Star WD. My 18tb Was AUD$323 when I got it a year back. 16tb $271 from Amazon. It was hard to justify upgrading it last year but now looking back, did the right choice. Running unraid.

    Honestly I am shocked at the responses by the OP here, expecting us to spend $500 on a used drive in this economy with only 3 months warranty. It's not like you can eat these once they fail. Seriously please don't buy these drives, send a message to lingtech by not purchasing these.
