$200 to put towards a burner phone.

    • +2

      Not getting this statement?

      • +4

its about the new social media 'character test' by checking travellers phones by border guards in US

          • @BobCobb: "I'm sorry sir, after reviewing your comments on Ozbargain from 2026, we have decided that we don't want your kind of people in our country. You've been booked onto the next available Qantas flight back to Australia."

        • +2

Having not long come back from the US, this is just scare mongering come from who knows where. When you apply for your Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to get in, there is a section where you add your socials. This is optional.

There was no checking of my phone anywhere in the US, for international flights or internal flights. They do not have the staff to sit there and check each person that enters the US internationally. Now if you are acting weird, look out of the ordinary or have been flagged some other way then im sure that will be part of your detainment. But they arent going to detain you for just looking at you and thinking 'that person must have some not nice words about Trump on their socials, lets stop them'

How would Amex know if we have booked one of the eligible flights ? I thought merchants are not supposed to share this information with financial institutions

    • +4

My Amex statement shows the routing, the class, the ticket number and the passenger name when I book with Qantas.

      • Is it a Qantas card? Can't say I've seen that when booking with Virgin Australia or Singapore Airlines, or Qantas domestically

        • +1

Nope, Amex Platinum. It also appears for me when booking on Cathay.

          • +1

@momo1988: Guess that's what the high annual fees are for! I just checked a Qantas domestic flight booked in January and it just says Qantas Mascot on my standard Elevate card

  • +2

Would be cool if this could stack with the amex travel credits but alas.

Hi Trump, thanks for high petrol and inflation, please go screw yourself hard and deep. :)

    • +1

Australias failure to secure their energy supply is not the fault of americans

      • +4

But the US and the Israeli idiot caused this

        • -4

They didn't cause Australia to be running under 1 month of supply.

          • -2

@hippyhippy: Having one month of supply didn’t cause prices to go up.

It was people like you hyperventilating about it leading to panic buying and hoarding that caused prices to go up.

If you’re looking for someone to blame a mirror is a good start.

            • +1

@tp0: You're just flat wrong. If we keep 3 months of supply, the shock wouldn't be so bad. Better yet, if we kept a years supply it wouldn't have changed

              • @hippyhippy: There was no "shock". Supply has been maintained. Prices are just a market response to a spike in demand caused by panic.

                • -1

@tp0: You're definition of supply being maintained doesn't match with the real world. Proves are still double for diesel. Some stations still don't have it after weeks of "supply being maintained". Spike in demand is apparently a few people have an extra jerry can at home and the prime minister going on a begging tour to the refining nations.

Here's albo showing he understands exactly what hes failed to do by criticising the liberals for failing at the same job.

So don't blame the yanks for something our gov failed to do. Fuel inmany countries is still cheap.

      • +2

If they didn’t start the war, the petrol prices wouldn’t have gone up in the first place

        • -2

There are many reasons why oil prices might increase…Australia though their inept politicians was not prepared

  • Weird, I don't seem to have this on my Plat.

  • +1

Not on my Amex QF ultimate, have had a QF cashback in ages.

    • Shows up on my Amex QF ultimate

  • +5

How would Amex know if the Qantas transaction would be for flights to North America. Surely all they will see is "Qantas' on the purchase history of the card?

    • They do check, well at least Qantas does. Two years ago I purchased a Qantas ticket for a similar promo which met the spend criteria for a different destination than the eligible AX/QF marketed destinations; the credit did not post. I escalated to Amex just to see far I could stretch these rebate promos to determine how much automation v. manual checks were performed in the background, an indeed Qantas performs manual checks before approving the credit.

Just had the experience flying Qantas to Tokyo. It was bad. Chicken in the preordered vegetarian food, slow service, toilets not cleaned by crew. And then having to deal with the US customs etc. No thanks

    • +17

Yeah doesn't sound like a great experience if you were meant to go to Tokyo and ended up in the US!

  • On my ex platinum

  • Got in on my explorer card.

  • -1

on Pat Charge, Rewards Advatage Charge or Plat Res Credit - mind you Im in Adelaide so fares dont apply from here??? And anyway wouldn't fly QF to /from US

  • +3

the $200 should compensate for the price increase by qantas today i saw in the news

  • Vancouver could be worth visiting

  • Got this on my discovery and 3 supps.

  • +2

Now a new Singapore route added to Amex this morning, same spend

  • this might be a good deal guys, you purchased a ticket and got cashback, airline starts to cancel the flights massively this week.
means you might just get some free money.

    • amex will take the credits back when its cancelled.
