  • Last bargain lots of dealers didnt honor the extras. Any tips on getting them to honor this round?

    • Don't pay

    • Go to a dealer that will. If none will, walk away and buy another vehicle.

      Don't play their game.

    • I complained on social media and dealer principal just gave me $3k to stop complaining, better than the original extra I was complaining about.

    • Buy a Camry for $59k to show them aholes who is boss.

  • The AWD looks great but the battery is just a bit too small for me, and it's so frustrating. (I have a bit of a niche case of needing to be able to do Melbourne to Hamilton without stopping - something I comfortably do in my current car and not a compromise I want to have to make when moving to an EV). Seems I need a car with at least a 75kw battery to do this comfortably.

    • Probably wait for byd atto 3 evo 2026.

      • Still has the same ugly interior that's addled the Atto 3 since it first came here (they can change it to black but it's still yuck) - but yes it should be worth looking at once it gets here. I wonder if Leapmotor is going to do an AWD B10…

        • Agreed, it's rough to get hung up on a small detail but it's turned me off too :(

          • @abowen: The cupholders in the Skoda Octavia is what turned me away lol
Ridiculously small and won't fit a lot of cups/mugs we have.

It's a bit sad that such little things can ruin our perspective of an otherwise great product.

          • @abowen: I respectfully disagree. I love that it's not just a tablet surrounded by a sterile, anodyne interior.

            • @SupeNintendoChalmers: Their interiors for the atto 2 and sealion 7 are fine (not tablets surrounded by nothing either), atto 3 is dreadful especially in the lighter colour.

        • Agreed. Interior is pretty bad compared to brands like geely and xpeng.

        • I think they did a mild update on the inside. Toned down the muscle/gym look which has gone a long way. Still has the guitar strings on the doors though.

        • It is called "Yuan" in China, referring to the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368), the first foreign-led dynasty in China (the Mongol Empire). The interior makes so much sense in that case.

        • Same guitar strings too

        • Indeed, its a good looking car from the outside but bloody hell the interior is awful.

          • @Brianqpr: And the fixed non-adjustable in unergonomic headrests which cause neck pain in Atto 3 are just incompetent engineering. I could overlook the poor design but couldn't drive in a vehicle that literally hurts to drive. Had to buy a competitor car with no such BS.

        • What about the Atto 3 interior is disliked? I honestly have no problem with it so I don't really understand.

          • @greater mimic: The guitar strings, the weird door handles. My wife took one look and hated it immediately. It's pretty polarising

            • @cook99: Is it just those two things? I guess they are pretty different to other cars so that makes sense. I don't mind the door handles though and the novelty of the guitar strings have worn off… Maybe I'm just not affected by little things like that

If it didn't function well I would understand it more, but they seem to work pretty well. If it's just a looks thing… I guess I just can't relate

      • If only they actually updated the exterior and interior.
The rest of the package is basically the goldilocks zone for an SUV

        • I said literally this to someone this morning!

(Just needed to get that excitement off my chest)

          :)

    • That is indeed a niche case - would probably advise you to go for a hybrid.
Having a seal performance which supposedly has 520km WLTP, I would never risk anything over 400km even, but that's not a use-case for me at all - I average less than 300km over the week and charge up off solar on the weekend

      • plenty of cars including yours (but I'd want a hatch style) can do it! im not buying another petrol car after my current one conks out.

    • Denz Z9 GT has entered the chat and flashed.

    • How many km your trip and do you require AWD for specific reason?

      • The trip is exactly 300km door to door but the difficult bit is a long ascent up towards ballarat that apparently kills range. ABRP says the 2023 updated ioniq 5 AWD can do it (78kwh battery) with enough to spare to get me to the 50kw evie charger in Hamilton.

No particular need for AWD other than that I would like the powahhhh (and the Ioniq 5 AWD, Zeekr 7X Performance and Model Y Long Range and Performance can do it, so it's something I expect to be able to do!).

The Zeekr X is the perfect size for my small family (7X too big and much more expensive) if only it had a 75kwh battery…

        • I have SL7 premium RWD and has plenty of power, didn't want to pay extra $12k for their AWD to accelerate couple of sec faster and compromise range. I test drove few cars guess GAC Aion V has 510km range and was fast enough, the new Toyota BZ4X has excellent range too and the 2026 new model had price drop of $10k with great improvements (car interior does not look as luxury thou). I dont think you will find too many AWD cars that has large range as driving 110km/h and uphill would kill the range. Xpeng G6 is introducing new AWD later this year once they sort out their issue with the distributer TrueEV

          • @huntabargain: Thanks yes all great options, I have test driven the Aion V and is actually a nice car and 75kwh battery will be sufficient, however I can't get over how ugly it is. A shame because the BZ3X sold in China (which is an Aion V under the skin) looks much better - so I know GAC are capable of making a non-ugly car!

I also like the Deepal S07 but shit DC charging speeds at 80ish kw. Mazda CX-6e also a contender if I can let go of AWD.

Don't suppose you've ever tested the max range of your Sealion 7 Premium? I haven't driven one but have sat in it and feels very premium for the $$ (a bit bigger than I'd like but we could certainly manage).

            • @xyron: I think Aion V is more boxy which looks more like traditional 4WD (I used to have X-Trail before) so the +ve is better viewing and you sit higher. Most new modern EV cars are more difficult to see front/rear end and some rely on rear view mirror camera, so it take a bit of time to get used to. SL7 RWD has 480km range but so far I am getting 15.6kw average but then I don't drive much on highway at >100k/h.
Agree Deepal S07 is great price/feature, the concern is not sure if many dealers/service centre around and not selling too many cars in Aust. I heard about the new Mazda which is made by Deepal with Mazda tweaks. I have solar and home battery at home so I only charge 11kw AC at home, I will only need DC charge couple of times a year when I travel away on holidays, so don't think its a big deal unless you do it very often!

              • @huntabargain: what is +ve

                • @eleon00: It's just a shorthand for positive

                  • @cosmicstarhorse:

It's just a shorthand for positive

Wouldn't just + be even shorter? Because + literally means positive, so why the need for the 've'? That would make it 'positiveve' which makes no sense.

                    • @1st-Amendment:

Wouldn't just + be even shorter? Because + literally means positive, so why the need for the 've'? That would make it 'positiveve' which makes no sense.

-ve From google search: +ve" is a common abbreviation for positive, often used in scientific, medical, and technical shorthand to indicate a positive result, charge, or value. It is frequently paired with "-ve" (negative) to quickly denote polarity or test outcomes.

                      • @huntabargain: Didn't answer my question. I have Google too you know…

                        • @1st-Amendment: "+" would refer to "plus" if you want to know more may be take some short hand course.

                          • @huntabargain:

                            +" would refer to "plus"

You've clearly never looked at any battery in your life then, or had any electrical engineering education…

if you want to know more may be take some short hand course.

I did the long version and have the degree to prove it. But thanks for thinking of me.

          • @huntabargain: a used Polestar 2 LR. ?

            • @ruprectaus: I haven't looked much at polestar 2, I think its a sedan? but it has great range at 660km

        • I have had an AWD since May 2025.

I do very little driving so my range is low (losing some charge from my keys/phone communicating to the car a few times a day as I walk through the house.).

I get 330 KM per 66KW (battery). If you are driving every day, you will get a bit more than that.

        • Not keen on the models you listed? Also Polestar 2 should get you there? Not too big also

          • @roby21: Polestar 2 got the same problem as Tesla - all the sub 40k ones disappeared. Also infuriating how they don't have adaptive cruise unless they had the pilot pack added when new. I lost interest when searching for them for that reason too. It's also got a very small boot (but so does the Zeekr X I guess)

    • rated at 415km, of course you won't get that but Melb to Hamilton is 300km?

      • 300km yes but highway speeds 100/110kph and the big hill towards ballarat means everything I've read means I need a WLTP closer to 500 to make 300km with enough of a buffer (10-15%) at the other end. I'd leave Melbourne with 100%. What would be ideal is if I could take a few EVs for a weekend long testdrive to actually test the drive myself!

        • oh ok.

yeah, get a car with a larger range.

I wouldn't buy a Tesla but they are excellent for energy efficiency and range. Even the basic models will do 300km easy.

          • @JimB: Apparently the RWD will struggle to do this trip too, otherwise it'd be the go for me (I'm not particularly anti tesla and I'm not 100% committed to AWD, but it'd be a nice to have).

Prior to the oil crisis there were heaps of ex-lease Ioniq 5 Epiq AWDs for sub $40k on carsales but they've all since been snapped up (and the newer ones to come online are closer to $50, which is getting very close to one of these brand new Zeekr Xs with a full warranty, more power, and a drivers seat that hasn't been farted in).

            • @xyron: Surely you borrow a Tesla from someone you know to test it out. very common cars.

I'd be surprised if it can't make it.

              • @JimB: I have a couple of friends with Model Y RWDs but they're in Adelaide! I could rent one from Sixt one weekend and give it a go, I suppose. ABRP says it wont make it, though.

                • @xyron: If you're not doing Melbourne to Hamilton every week, you would also stop and charge for 10 minutes to top up.

I wouldn't let that stop me if you really liked the car.

                • @xyron: Use something like Turo to rent one for a couple of days and do the drive.

              • @JimB: You could also try renting a Tesla as well? I think its roughly 2-300

            • @xyron: I don't get why Hyundai EVs are priced so high. They have ICCU problems which can get you stranded and without power on the highway. It's not an exaggeration and the scale of the problem is massive. They can't fix it.

        • I drive 270 km from my model 3 SR+ with rated range 420 km, 50% of the road is 110 km/hr, 45% is 100 km/hr (very rough bitumen surface) and only 5% (70-80 km/hr) and I still have 25% battery left. Tesla model 3 is extremely energy efficient, I don't think any other EV with the same battery could achieve this. Granted this road doesn't have any hills so your use case would be different but if I were you I'd definitely try a rented Tesla to see how that does.

    • I think if you were able to stop and charge for about 10min of supercharging you'd be fine

      • Not something I have to do with my 15 year old ICE car and not something I think I should have to do with a modern EV…hence my frustration that so many of the newer cheaper ones are coming out with batteries that are too small for even a small roadtrip. It's also not as easy as it sounds as I'd have to detour off the western freeway and into ballarat, easily adding 30-40 minutes to the trip, and I'm also relying on the chargers to be free/accessible when I make the trip. Also, if my 3 year old child has fallen asleep, stopping for a supercharge and waking her up is akin to committing suicide.

        • why would you wake her? just lets her sleep in aircon etc while you watch some Netflix for 10 min and off you go

          • @derdew: As soon as we slow down or stop, she wakes up, no matter where we're going! (Sorry I should have been more clear, we certainly don't wake her up in the car if we don't have to!)

        • I used my Tesla Y LR to commute from Caroline Springs to Wendouree daily for 3 years, going 115km/h. Going to work uphill consumed about 25% battery, back home downhill about 20%. Rated Driving range is 533km, but realistically its around 425-430km of range with hilly highway conditions.

The detour off the Western Hwy to Wendouree Supercharger is under 5mins. There is hardly anyone using the charger there, as people in regional areas don't often buy EVs (They love their diesels). You only need a quick top up to have enough buffer to reach your destination so 10mins should be ok.

          • @voo123: sounds like the Model Y LR (or Performance) would be ideal, shame all the cheap ones (sub $50k) on Carsales have been snapped up!

        • Looks like the rule-of-thumb real world range on freeway is -20% range (WLTP), at least.
If Tesla (being one of the most efficient EV's) is getting -20% range on freeways; other cheaper brand EV's would most likely fair worse.

Also, southern states like VIC, TAS, SA gets cold in Winter, and having a "heat pump" is a necessity. Without a "heat pump", minus another 20% the range when using the heater in Winter.

(Zeekr X - did not see "heat pump" in specifications?)

    • (Hard) left field - MG IM5 Platinum 100kWh 655km WLTP - close to $70k tho'

      • Yeah the interior is so ugly though and I think at $70k there are options like Zeekr 7X Long Range and even the Leapmotor C10 AWD which are better for less.

        • Have you test drove the im5 or Im6 and seen it in person? The parts feel very premium and at MG Dandenong they were more than happy to bargain it down about 5k from asking price

    • I test drove the AWD and it's a beast (probably too powerful for it's size - I mean the front lifts up noticeably when you plant the foot). The car was quite nice but the rear seat space was pretty compromised (the front was great) and the boot even more so unfortunately which would rule it out for us (the rear seats and boot seemed quite a bit smaller than our BYD Dolphin and it's a pretty small car). We also have the Xpeng G6 (LR variant) which is nowhere near as powerful as the AWD but it's larger/loads of space/more comfortable/great tech and has really good range (WLTP of 570km and it actually achieves it's WLTP, unlike some other EV's we've had (Volvo XC40 cough cough))

    • How about the MG4 LR? I’ve seen it get 400km comfortably and have plenty of juice to spare.

    • True, 415km WLTP range is too low.

    • Check IM5 or IM6 it has 100kw battery with 555 km range and start with 59K and great drive

      • The IM5 with 100kw battery starts at 71 driveaway. The cheaper one only has a 75kw battery

    • My cousin did 5 trips in February from Albert Park to Hamilton Base Hospital NON STOP driving a Chery Omoda E5.

    • Check out the Aion V. Not the best looking exterior-wise, but super sharp price, 75lwh battery, premium spec and sub-50K on road.

  • That X I think is one of the best looking EV’s on the market. I want the 009, but the price!

    • I know! I just got a second hand Honda Odyssey and love it to bits, and getting an EV version would be a dream.

$150k for highest model drive away… ooof. If dropped to $100k, maybe I could do it..

      • The 009 is over priced in Aus. Great MPV but not 30K better than the Denza D9 or the Xpeng X9. The 8X though might be worth the 100K that its potentially priced for.

    • best looking EV’s

better than the Cupra Born ?

It was $47K in January 2025.

      • they did say "one of the..". one must quote the whole sentence for this reason.

        • Yes, you are right.
I lifted part of the sentence,
and I should have quoted the whole context.

      • Cupra is better looking though…. and has more personality.

        • it is very beautiful

    • Have heard lots of people praising the 7X looks, but this is the first I've heard anyone saying the X looks anywhere near nice.

      • It's all subjective, I do prefer the look of X over 7X.

  • No physical door handles. Hate to be trapped inside the car when the software controlling the doors glitches out/fails (as it will as some point or another)

    • Just keep a cheap window breaker in the glove box if you're worried about it.

      • Won't be so cheap once you factor in replacing the glass

        • Mechanical doors can fail too, but do you have a window breaker too?

          e.g. Ford Falcon XF's lol https://www.reddit.com/r/CarsAustralia/comments/1m91e5o/were…

          • @abowen: I'd rather trust mechanical than software. There's a reason China has banned future cars without a door handle. This is likely the last EV with hidden/no door handles

            https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-02-03/china-bans-hidden-doo…

            • @illusion99: I particularly don't like any cars that have mechanical releases hidden. All it takes is a crash where the driver is knocked out, the 12v system is off line, there are kids in the back and in a panic and a fire has started, they don't know how to open the door…

The Australian Design rules should ban any design that is not intuitive to open (ie: ban all cars with hidden releases)

              • @Pcoder: I agree. The mechanical door releases are well hidden and the Auto Unlock during an accident is of unknown realiability.

              • @Pcoder: That's a pretty specific scenario. Do you fret when they go in another vehicle?

                • @Big L: Electronic only handles are a solution in search of a problem. The fact is there have been many cases overseas were responders weren't able to open doors because the 12v volt system had failed. Yes, they should have looked at breaking the windows, but in a panic, you don't always have the time.

                  • @Pcoder: I guess you're right. It sounds like people are panicking just thinking about what could happen, let alone if it did.

I hope those people never go in a convertible

          • @abowen: When have mechanical did failed? Not including Ford 😅

      • But how do I open the glove box when the power's out?

        • you gotta get a glove box breaker!
