Pretty much what I paid 3 years ago for it. Good price.

    • i like Breville machines but the grinders are terriable and also get worse over time. I recommend getting the espresso only system and just buying a flat bur grinder.

      • At what price entry can you get a machine with a flat burr grinding mechanism?

        • +2

          DF54 for $356 total at https://df64coffee.com/en-au/products/df54

No real warranty, I suppose. Mine has been going great though. ymmv

        • there is alot of good deals for DF54 grinders if you want a DF64 though hard to get a good deal right now on that. But for entry level I think DF54s are good, Breville has a few good deals during the year for there espresso only machines, and there are bundles you can get too.

      • +1

They acquired Baratza a few years ago and now these units all have Baratza burr grinders in them, it's been fine for me for a few years now

        • o really??? didn't know this. you know roughly the year they did? i am pretty sure i got my oracle way before this. though lol.

      • Could you elaborate on this more? We were gifted a machine about 8 years ago, and I'm curious about what degrades? I honestly don't know but I do struggle to pull shots with older beans.

        • +1

Comparatively poor shot with later or last batch of your coffee beans is normaly in my experience… I sometimes adjust grind setting 1 or half step finer and dial it back down when i buy newer beans. Also do you weigh your shots? Mine's 18g for the double and has not faulted me

          • @kaleidoscope: This seems about what I'm facing now. As the beans get older I struggle to hold pressure, so will adjust for finer grinds over time. I go 18g however I'll check my output now.

            • @Neverrain: Have you adjusted the inner burr? I have the SGP, went from inner burr from 6 to 2, now I can choke the machine at around 17. It's very easy to do.

I would suggest going from 6-4 to start with.

              https://youtube.com/shorts/sz1WqoV_Y4k

              • @Austrian Oak: I honestly haven't touched this, will give it a go.

My shots improved with old beans at like setting 1-3 :/

      • I got Breville grinder & machine separate, in case something goes wrong

  • +2

I've had one of these for over 5 years now, haven't had an issue with it at all, still looks brand new.

Can recommend getting a $15 scale for weighing beans for dose rather than keeping them in the bean hopper as time setting for grinding can't be relied on for an exact dose.

    • Also nice to know how much caffeine you're consuming so you can adjust as necessary.

      • I use the single wall double shot basket with 18 grams and it works well for me

    • Do you have the link for the scale?

      • +1

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/885603

I bought one like that, you can find others/similar

        • Get one with a timer, it will help with dialling in your grind. Aim for 1:2 ratio in around 25-32 seconds.

          • +1

@Austrian Oak: I just use the timer on the machine, when doing a custom shot, it has clock showing how many seconds it's been extracting for.

In saying that, I'm not James Hoffman, so I might be missing something.

            • @juph0rry: Fair, this machine doesn't have an inbuilt timer. Could always use a phone or watch though.

      • You can buy something like this:

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005012001830766.html

It's rechargeable and has a timer. You can use batteries as well if the internal battery stops charging down the line.

The model I have is this:

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005767964874.html

I got from Amazon, but no longer sold there.

        • @GreenLego
          Noob question.
Why do you need a timer for coffee?

          • +1

@Lord Ra: You don't 'need' it.

But for those who want to be very precise, they want to measure how long it takes for their espresso shot. Usually people want 40g of espresso out, in around 30 seconds. If it's too quick, it may indicate that the grind is too coarse or some channeling in the basket has happened. If it takes too long, then the grind may be too fine.

People also like to time their pour over coffees as well so that it's not taking too long or too short.

            • +1

@GreenLego: I take it people don't have watches. Or clocks. 😉
Good to know, thanks for that, very precise!

Cheaper here - not sure on any difference

    https://elvex.com.au/product/breville-the-barista-espresso-c…

Had this for more than 12 years now. It's great machine and has served me approx 2-3 coffees daily :)

    • How often do you service? Any issues in the interim?

      • +1

To be honest, I have not serviced it even once :P

I've only run the clean cycle and replaced the water filter myself.

Last year it begun forgetting to auto stop according to the setting i set, so sometimes if I am not standing ready to stop the espresso will just keep coming. Most of the time it works, but when not you can see me making long and quick leaps to get back to kitchen to stop the madness.

        • +1

Wow great run! Congrats. What you are describing might be the solenoid. Easy fix if you are a DIYer…. Watch out for 220V inside though…

Do you use tap water? Descaling can sometimes cause hiccups with these machines….

          • +1

@Naigrabzo: Thank you for the tip! Im quite handy and I might give it a go after I've finished all my other projects ;)

I use tap water filtered through Brita filter, never straight tap water. And I haven't been that regular with running the cleaning cycle or changing the water tank filter either :)

          • +2

@Naigrabzo: Not the solenoid, it's the flow meter. Detects how much water is going through. When it stops reading that correctly it doesn't know when to stop. Common issue with these machines.

            • @wintermadness: Interesting! I didn't know it had a flow meter. (I need one for my irrigation for kicks and giggles…. )

              Thanks for the correction.

        • +1

Hi mate, I had this issue. i just reset the machine, hold some buttons down (check google) and it fixed it for me.

        • I've had mine for 10 years and i'm having a similar issue randomly since maybe 3 months, but as it doesn't happen all the time I'm not worried yet. The only thing that has failed is the pressure gauge, it lasted a year at the most, but i never missed it.
Never serviced, i use filtered water (under sink, cheap bunnings filter). Great machine!

      • +2

There is nothing to service on these, side from clean and descale. A light goes on every so many cycles to remind you.

        • +1

I had to replace the O-ring a few years back and the button/switch to initiate the grinding of the coffee is starting to go on mine. The O-ring was an easy fix. Haven’t attempted to fix the switch but there are videos on youtube how to do it. Still it’s a great machine.

  • This vs the Ninja? Only asking because I just bought for a similar price 2 weeks ago.

    • +4

I would trust Breville over a Ninja any day. For the price these are very good machines that can be expected to last over a decade.

    • I got the ninja and this.

The ninja didn't do it for me.
The steps seem wider, so harder to dial in a ground.

Even after letting the ninja pour a dozen shots my dialed BES870 still tasted way better.

The ninja is definitely "good enough" but the BES is worth the effort I reckon

  • +2

Good machine, running well since Covid

    • Yea same haha, bought just before covid for $399, and does at least 2 coffees per day every day. It's done so well.

      • Wow! $399 is the best price I've heard for this so far!

I paid $480, along with a free redemption for two 1kg bags of good quality beans, and thought that was as good as it gets.

What deal did you jump on for the $399?

        • +1

Factory seconds (damaged box) at breville factory outlet. No free beans though.

  • Got one of these during Covid. Sold when i upgraded. But got 4 years of probably 4-6 cups a day.

  • +1

I avoid integrated grinders, but otherwise a solid machine.

    • TBH, it's good to have it. Just buy your DF64 etc if you want and keep the integrated for decaf. WIN WIN.

  • +1

Just be aware I don't think these machines have a 9bar opv and need to be modded which may void your warranty.

I have the version without the grinder and it's set to around 14bar

  • -8

Becomes $464.97 when ordered through the Doordash store using 20% off giftcards.

    • +1

Can't find it on Doordash from Perth Costco. Not availble here or is there some trick to it?

      • Probably not available there/ not on doordash

In Melbourne, it wasn't showing up the first couple of days of the deal, but showing now.

    • Is there trick to buy more than 3 cards($300 total) in a day?
Last time also I didn't buy as I was worried stock will run out if I split my purchases over 2 days, and I will be stuck with doordash credit I do not want.

      • Might have to purchase online and also go in-store to get an extra 3. Haven't tested this however.

    • +2

How is this a valid neg when it’s literally from Costco via DoorDash?

      • I guess you're right. Still, the OP should have mentioned DD and DD GC in the description. I negged it so others that didn't know about that wouldn't be caught paying ~$85 more.

        • Not everyone has spare DD GC lying around, and I personally wouldn’t negged it if it’s from the same store but via other channels

I only would use the neg if it’s from a different store that’s available at cheaper price

    • +1

Anyone know if it will be stainless steel colour? Picture on doordash showing black.

      • +1

It will depend what colour the dasher picks up. When I got mine last year I left a note asking for stainless steel and got stainless steel and then gave them a tip.

        • +1

          Great thanks for confirming

          • +1

@actuarial: After checking out Costco, it seems that they only have stainless steel in stock, so that should be all that's available.
Last year they had three models of the Breville Express available.

  • I've had one of these for 6 years and it makes a really good consistent coffee. Spend sown time (and coffee) dialling it in and you will be rewarded. I use the built in grinder and even doser, and can't fault it. I used to weigh and grind each but just lost interest when I couldn't tell the difference.

The only issue I've had has been the water flow sensor, you can replace it relatively easily with some research and the part cost $30.

  • +1

Got a 10 year old one of these given by some friends who "upgraded" to fully automatic. Still going strong.

  • +2

If you have a 3d printer lots of things you can print as well I recommend.

I've pulled 2500 shots or so on the BES860, these units are fantastic value for daily drivers. Perhaps not what I'd buy now, but different budget.

    • Which one would you buy now after the experience with this one over the years?
Any issues or weakness in this product you are trying to address with something different?

      • +1

        Gaggia Classic E24

      • +4

Dual boiler minimum, I'm over the thermoblock, milk takes forever to steam.

I might be up for a Rocket Appartamento TCA at this point, but would want to explore better value competition to that first.

  • I've had this for around 7 year and it's a very good entry level machine but average grinder. Grinder served me well for a few years before I upgraded to a DF64, which makes extracting more consistent.

I've reached a ceiling with this machine imo. Every day I hope it dies (so that I can upgrade to a Dual Boiler), but it still keeps going!

    • Nah, since they bought out Baratza, they use the same conical burrs as found in the Baratza Encore ESPs, so a big step up from what you had 7 years ago. Obviously not in the same league as the DF64 but will be fine for espresso.

      • Steps are still too large and it struggles with light roasts are grinding super fine

        • Have you tried adjusting the inner burr?

    • Why dual boiler? I have the dual boiler 920 and I don't think it makes a different coffee…? You can froth and cook coffee at the same time though.

      • Still researching what's the next step up without spending too much. Ideally around $1-1.5K. Always though the BDB would be a step up with the 58mm portafilter and better temp stability.

  • -2

    Moka p0t

  • My unit still feels brand new after five years and about 2,500 cups of coffee. One tiny thing I’ve noticed is that the 'Clean/Descale' light has been on constantly for almost two years instead of blinking. Make me lost track on when it needs a good servicing. I always use filtered water from a Brita jug. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

    • It means it needs cleaning/backflushing, using the little rubber disc that goes into the basket

      • +2

No it does not mean that. It means the machine needs descaling but instead of machine identifying it needs to descale its some sort of a dumb time limit.

        • +3

          Solid light = descaling required
          Flashing = backflushing required

        • +1

Of course it is time or cycle based.
You expect sensors to detect scale build up?
How would that be done on a consumer budget?
I'd be surprised if even the $20,000 commercial machines have that.

The bloody Breville doesn't even warn you when the water tank is empty!!

          • @bargaino: Pretty sure it changes colour of light when water is low. You can see the water level (it's lit also) on the front anyways.

            • @Naigrabzo: I think you must be looking at a different machine. No coloured lights or front-visible water level on mine.

              • @bargaino: Ah Sh#$, Mine is the BES 920. MY bad. The coffee making bits are the same AFAIK.

    • +3

You need to reset it mate once you've done it. See the manual.

    • +1

Mine does the same. I don’t bother to follow the light. I just descale/backflush every 6 months.

    • Thanks for the tips! The indicator light finally went off after I ran both a cleaning cycle and a descaling cycle. It was my mistake—I hadn't checked the manual in years and thought the solid light only meant it needed backflushing; I didn't realize it was for descaling. Glad it's sorted!

  • +1

Any thoughts on this vs Barista Touch?

I have this one already and looking to either replace or upgrade soon. I mainly make long blacks. The Touch looks like it may be more convenient by have pre-selections for the type of coffee you want vs having to measure, grind, etc unless I’ve misunderstood how it works

    • +1

Which areas of the express do you feel is lacking and pushing you to consider upgrading?
The barista touch is pretty much the same thing, just different UI, the screens are also an additional failure point, prone to breaking and bricking your whole machine.

      • +1

yer i agree, the barista touch looks nicer but in reality isn't really worth it. If you are dropping ~$1500 on a machine a dual boiler second hand and/or on sale and a seperate grinder will give you better value.

We had a barista express, later on i got a better grinder second hand from a friend, then when the barista express pump died I upgraded to the dual boiler. Very happy with the upgrade. Saying that Barista express or similar breville machine pulling ~2 coffees a day for most people will be a massive upgrade of cheap full autos or pod machines.

      • More for consistency and convenience. My coffees aren’t always consistent with the Express. This is down to user error, not the machine. I don’t weigh the beans and estimate around two shots per cup. My tamp strength probably also varies. I could start weighing the beans and upgrade the tamp to improve the consistency though. With the touch - I assume I just press a button and it makes the coffee so I wouldn’t need to tamp/weigh the beans, or have I misunderstood how it works?

        • +1

The Touch is the same thing, you'd still have to tamp, if you get the Touch Impress then it has a built in tamper but you'd still be manually pulling the lever, and at that price point you'd better off going for the Oracle, which sounds like what you're after - doses, grinds, auto tamps. In saying that, regardless of which Breville you get, if it has an inbuilt grinder, consistency is not it's strong point.

    • Sounds like you might be wanting to drop whole lotta cash for the next better machine. All brevilles in this range are the same…. Maybe you need to check out the Italian machines etc ..

  • got this during covid, its fantastic, use it maybe 4 or 5 times a day within the house - the steamer isnt as strong as some of the other ones but honestly just happy it does everything and its still working!

Def will buy another breville in a few years

    • +1

Descale it and steamer will become strong again.

  • Man, would love a deal on the Bambino instead? 🙏
