Marketplace, I am on my way.

    • Indeed !

    • -7

I'm the bad guy and told a lot of sellers about this deal 😜

      • Honestly, good on you

        • -1

I'm linking this post. The more people we have here the better.

The neggers should know you're telling me I'm doing the right thing

    • If they haven’t been taken down by now.

    • +1

Picked up one yesterday on marketplace for $450 with some games. Traded in today and walked away with $804.38. 🤝

      • +1

Oh, and a free Spider-Man ramen bowl set. Ramen’s never tasted so good

  • +6

Wow, thought I saw it wrong

    • +9

Please refrain from sawing the PS5

  • +4

A bit out of the loop, but what is happening? Got my PS5 disc for $606 in 2024. Why is EB games buying it at a premium? Surely they can't make much selling second hand with new being 1K.

    • +17

Probably because the recent price hike of PS5/ Pro, suddenly, these old PS5 value spikes up too.

      • +12

But who is paying more than $750 for a used launch edition PS5?

    • +3

I'm going to assume supply issues

      • I’m going to assume there could be a way to root the first gen hardware. No, not you Nintendo.

    • +3

Buying consoles at $749 and selling at $800 is still a profit and reduces the amount of secondhand consoles on the used market. Likely the strategy is to control the used market rather than actually make money off it.

      • +2

And they make most money selling games, accessories, warranties, online games cards etc.

      • +8

2020 units isn’t anywhere near the quantity required to take control the market

        • +1

But the units sent in after that will.

Lots will still sell their PS5 consoles at a loss, given a fair amount of work is needed to get it ready for trade-in.

        • +1

2020 is not technically the benchmark is symbolic
Because the offer includes slim disc edition

The PlayStation 5 "Slim" was released in December, 2023

      • I'm thinking the same. They want to control the used market and collect a stash of PS5 Disc consoles so that they can keep selling discs and consoles and the like.

  • +19

strictly limited to the first 2,020 customers and must be EB World PLUS members

Wonder how many will sub to EB world plus but still miss out not being in the first 2020.

    • +16

      All of us in WA.

      • WA has an Electronic Boutique when you guys don’t even have electricity yet?

      • I managed to do it at 5:30pm in NSW. Called them and got in the shop 1 minute before they closed.

    • +1

Could you not just sign up in-store when you go to trade it in assuming you're still one of the first 2020?

      • Thinking the same

        • same - don't see why not

  • +22

The upgrade deal is not good at all since you can get a PS5 pro $200 cheaper from JB. Take the cash.

    • +3

Yeah the upgrade deals are extremely questionable

    • +1

      100%

Take the cash and buy online from Kmart or Target for $1,139. Now I’m annoyed I didn’t keep my launch edition.

      • +1

I’ve already placed a C&C price match order at JB. If perchance I’m not one of the first 2,020 I just won’t pickup the order and get it refunded.

        • JB PM’d Kmart/Target you mean?

  • +1

JB still selling the PS5 Pro for 1200???

    • +1

Yep, they've had a price jump due to memory costs

      • +6

The new RRP effective 2nd April is $1399AUD for the PS5 Pro. Insane.

        • +1

I don't think they expect to sell many at RRP, they'll go on 'sale' at the old RRP and they'll make their profits that way

    • +1

      Kmart - $1139

  • +12

PS5 Slim is now $1000, that’s insane! up 33% half way through its life cycle

    • It is not. Where did you see this price?

    • PS5 generation is nearly at the end of its lifecycle.

      • +8

"lifecycle" is meaningless when the hardware is barely improving these days, it's now just an arbitrary line in the sand enforced by software.

        • +1

It’s enforced by a release cycle. The generational improvements have historically been very significant, though? The PS6 should be no different. Perhaps not as big a jump as PS4 to PS5, but these aren’t iPhones, and these aren’t releasing annually.

          • +2

            @dongltron:

The generational improvements have historically been very significant, though?

Not since 6th or 7th gen, no. Notice that:
            - The hardware became commoditised
            - Nintendo stopped competing on performance because that's a dead end.
            - Games now regularly ship on two gens with only slight graphical differences.
            - Within a gen there are multiple consoles from the same brand with different "improvements".

At this point you're basically just buying rolling release low-end PCs with locked bootloaders and heavy-handed DRM-enforcing OS with limited functionality.

            • @ssfps: I agree that the generations are arbitrary, Sony/MS/Nintendo could do a yearly or biennial hardware rolling release but they choose the traditional discrete generations (with a midlife cycle improvement).
I reckon there are a couple reasons. The first being developers only need to optimise for one or two hardware configurations within a generation. The other, probably more important reason would be it makes it easier for the end consumer. If it says PS5 on the case, it will work with the my PS5, regardless if it's the original, slim or pro.
Nintendo did have some "New" 3DS exclusive titles but eventually patched it so they could be played on any 3DS.
The rolling model could potentially be more profitable from a hardware sales point of view but it would stratify the hardware in such a way it would be a pain for non-tech savy users who just want to game. Like this game works with PlayStation 2023 , this works with PlayStation Pro 2020 but not Base 2020, you'll need the latest 2026 PlayStation for this game, etc.

              • @FireRunner: You're right re the main consumer point now being relatively static/few development/performance targets, but i'm not convinced that actually matters. Very few games aren't already cross platform, so most console games are still targeting 2 or 3 xboxes, 2 or 3 playstations, possibly a nintendo or two, and then PC on top of that (with all the scaling/LOD work anyway).

How many AAA games are only targeting one or two consoles these days? (Eg, only xbox X, or only ps5 pro?)

                • +1

@ssfps: There’s none that would target a single console, it would be a minimum of the base and Pro of the same generation (which is definitely a good thing, having a fragmented library of the same generation would suck).
It still reduces since its max 2 consoles per generation for each platform. Each platform doing an annual or biennial hardware release would require significantly more targets
As mentioned, I think the developers are the lesser of two reasons anyway. Having a clear product and lineup for the end user is the more important.

        • +1

Agreed. I find it interesting that technically on paper the PS5 Pro offers ~50% faster rendering and better ray tracing over the base PS5 but the game experience doesn't really change THAT much at all.

          • @mayo: That's the main driver IMO, diminishing gameplay/graphics improvements per performance increase, and diminishing performance increases due to moores law dying (and dennard scaling dying 20 years ago, around seventh gen).
            Thus, diminishing returns squared!

  • +14

There are apparently 336 EB games stores in Australia. That means they can take 6 trade in redemptions per store.

  • +10

They will resell when GTA 6 comes out in a few months

  • +2

Damn, I traded mine in 2 months ago.

    • EB do have a zero regret policy for buying back games you traded. Not sure if consoles are part of policy but worth calling about.

  • Should I do this if I don’t see myself using ps5 for the next few years due to new born at home?

    • +46

Keep the console as it will go up in value, sell the newborn. You can always make another one of those things

    • +1

$750 is nothing compared to how much you will be sending, you might as well keep it.

    • You could be stuck in a feeding chair with them attached to you. I wasn't, didn't game for years, but you might be different

    • +1

Buy a Playstation Portal to remote play from the PS5, works great.

    • +2

The newborn might push you to game more often. Best feeling is settling in to a nice game as the newborn sleeps on you in a carrier or even in your arms depending on the type of game.

I've been playing Expedition 33 and really enjoying it. Only started because the newborn meant I'm home more often and spending time looking after bub.

    • +1

I play for an hour or 2 before bed each night after baby has gone to sleep. Helps me wind down and keep my sanity.

    • It'll be more than a few years… Just a heads up.

  • +1

That’s more than what I paid for it. What’s the catch?

    • +14

You need EB plus, $49.95 a year subscription

      • +1

        No monthly?

        • +3

You can only apply in store for the 3 monthly subscription

    • +9

      Catches:

      1) The system has to work and look in good condition, that is the console, a controller, and the cables.
      2) You need to be a member of EB Games Plus, that costs $49 for 12 months, but it comes with a free meh gift.
      3) Offer limited to the first 2020 customers around Australia to get it.
      4) Cash not available in WA.

      • -1

I spray painted the cover plates black myself, I wonder if they still accept it.

        • +5

          Lol of course not

        • +1

          Does it look like shite?

          • @Viospeed: No you would think it’s just black cover plates until you really inspect it.

      • +1

I read "free meth gift" and got very excited.

  • +6

Holy moly. I honestly am quite tempted. Have barely used the thing outside of Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet, had it since 2020. Barely (profanity) touched.

But of course I had to go and buy a year of that PS+ mega deluxe top tier level thing a few months ago to try and be motivated to play it.

So far I played it for like a week and a half, platinum'd a few choice PS1/PS2/PSP games, and haven't touched it since early March. :'(

No way I'd ever get 750 for it again though. Damn.

      • +14

Now, my story begins in 19-dickety-two. We had to say "dickety" cause that Kaiser had stolen our word "twenty". I chased that rascal to get it back, but gave up after dickety-six miles

        • +7

Which was the style at the time

    • +1

      Me with my Series X.

Honestly such a shit generation all round.

Retro gaming is where it’s at now.

      • -1

We use the Xboxes every day, but a lot of that is your bog standard Netflixing, kid show streaming, DVDs, etc. and not a boatload of actual gaming. Like we do play games, a lot even, but it's mostly 9 times out of 10 stuff that could be (or is) on last gen, Fortnite, and the sort.

The whole gen is pretty trash, yeah. I like all three consoles, but I liked all three predecessors too, and these just feel like better versions of those. Series X is fantastic, quick resume is great, all that jazz…but no games worth buying on it. PS5 is a PS4 that looks prettier and loads faster, which is all you'd really want…but no games worth buying on it. Switch 2 is bigger, comfortable-r, higher res/definition, all that…but I already have Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, so…

I've recently been getting back into Dreamcast and it's been so fun. And I have long since lost count of how many emulator consoles I have. Retro shit is the best shit, my dude. 100% with you

      • +2

        There games are there.

        But are you?

  • +3

Bought the slim disc or $575 2 years ago, will sell it to them

    • +1

I thought they only want the OG Disc PS5? I’m so confused.

      • +2

My local eb told me deal is only for the original ps5. Ps5 slim disc trade value is around $380.

  • +6

The dilemma is that if you trade it in now, 99% without a ps5 will have to buy another when GTA6 comes out end of this year :p

    The FOMO will be real!

    • +1

Xbox series X should play it surely?

      • +1

Yes, but you would have to rebuy a console, unless you have 2 consoles right now and want to sell 1

    • I think this is the real reason they are doing this. Building up enough pre-owned stock for GTA6 launch.

If this does well they'll do it again in a few months time.

  • lol bought the temu ps5 last month

  • +6

Must be an EB world plus member. Well that killed the deal.

    • +5

Getting $700 after the EB plus membership fee of $49 is a deal killer on a 5-6 yr old console ? They will let you sign up on the spot surely

      • +1

If they could tell you before you sign up on the spot, whether you're one of the lucky 2000, it might be worth it, maybe.
Probably just a scam to sign you up to their EB plus.

  • +7

Plenty on Marketplace for ~$500. Easy $200 profit.

    • IF you are quick enough, they will be swamped with this deal

    • +1

Assuming they don’t find out and take it down. You would be daft selling this privately.

      • +1

Isn’t he saying , buy one now on marketplace for $500 and sell it to EB?

        • +1

Yeah, if the sellers don’t find out about this deal and sell it to EB instead.

          • @p3r514n: Oh I get it, all the people selling on Facebook are going to see this deal , got you
