  • Are all shortcut keys in the Definitive Edition the same as those in the original one?
    It's been more than 5 years I haven't played

I remember some of these games having a 'Classic' hotkey profile in the options to help restore the original bindings. Worst case, you can refund the game within the first two hours if it isn't to your liking.

No, it actually defaults to a modern grid-style hotkey layout (so the top left hand icon is Q, then to the right is W E R and so on. Unlike the original game though you can rebind the keys to anything you want, some OGs still use the original layout if they're used to that, but it's much easier to pick up the grid keys for newer and returning players.

      Some things also worth noting
      - AOE2 DE isn't just a remaster, it's actively in development and has a bunch of new expansions with more planned for the future.
      - Most recent new expansion came out February 17, 2026
      - There's new energy in the competitive/spectator scene, Red Bull just ran another tournament which had a grand final at the Royal Albert Hall in london. Surprisingly compelling viewing
      - The classic isometric graphics are preserved (unlike the in my opinion, ugly 3D of AOE4) but it has gotten a fresh lick of paint and looks amazing without compromising the OG look
      - This game (profanity) rules

I got my first copy of AoE in the front of a Nutri-Grain box. Good times.

the Wololo Cup was extremely interesting. Two masters of the gaming going at it plus the setup was top notch. I think this game base is strong 😁

    Wololo

Aoe2 is also on sale for $14 if you don't want any of the side games. The three dlcs comes with the game purchase.

I have all of them but AoE2 really is the most playable long term. Good buy at $14.

    • +2

Yeah the $14 AOE2 pack is the best pick in here if you want to dip your feet in, I've been enjoying it a lot so scooped up all the expansions

  • You bought a new rig so you could play 20+ year old games? 🤣 Love the mindset.

The specs are significantly higher, none of these are the OG games they are HD remasters with 4k textures (and also don't have that insane level of optimisation games had when devs had no choice). Gotta have that smooth FPS too, why not 🤣

I remember buying Age of Empires and then selling it when I was finished with the game. Why can't we do that anymore?
