Best Credit Cards (Right Now) for Points?

I am looking to get a credit card to utilize my funds in the offset account longer.

When I've read posts/deals on here, I've noticed some users are really smart at interrupting these credit card deals a lot better than me and was hoping for some help.

We usually spend about $4-5K per month for the whole family. Looking for the best overall deal available.

I've looked at multiple options myself such as Westpac, NAB, ANZ and Qantas, but a lot of them seemed quite comparable.

Any recommendations on the best option?

Thanks in advance.

Did you ask "insert AI name here"?

    • I did go to this. I trust OzB more so wanted to start here.

Go to Virgin or Qantas websites and find their credit card promos.

    Sort by highest points gain.

    Make sure you check for:
    - How much you earn immediately on point spend (ignore the amount you get for holding for a year).
    - See if you can actually spend the amount required.

If you can spend the amount required, start from top and work your way down. Not much more to it.

The best options are the ones that suitable for you at that time.

In the past, I usually went for Qantas points since my flights were pretty much covered by Qantas, and I have had collected quite large amount of points over the years. All of my overseas trips since 2017 were paid by points - mostly economy except one with business.

But in last 2 years, I also shifted to Velocity as Qantas started going down in value. Managed got 1 business flight to Vietnam and 1 economy to Japan on points.

I basically cycle thru the big4 and see which one suit me best. My last credit card was with HSBC just to get the fast track to Star Alliance Gold which suited me well for my trips with Singapore Airlines.

  • Would you prefer to earn Qantas or Velocity points; or something else?

    • As a premium subscriber, is there any card that offers extra OzPoints? I'm burning through so many points on OzAI.

      • Sorry to say OzPoints aren't a great option as they don't include the exclusively reserved First Class international reward seats offered by so many card issuers.

    • Very good question actually.

We fly from Adelaide to QLD once a year so I like Qantas overall, but if Velocity had better points, I'd happily go that way as well.

I am leaning towards the St G Amplify.

NAB signature also looks good with the cashback offsetting the fee but the lounge access makes that yearly flight a little easier with a 2 year old.

Lounge access would be bottom of the list of perks I'd be seeking; just not worth much unless you drink like a fish

        • And many people collect points, aim to book a busines class tickets which would have lounge access included - so this benefit is moot most of the time.

  • NAB Signature

  • Does everyone just get the initial bonus then cycle again?

Or with 2 people, alternate. Ie keep one to get the 2nd year bonus in my name and then stagger one in my wifes name as well (met min spend easier that way) and do the same?

    CC noob here.

    • Get the points and jump ship

    • I would line up the applications between you two like this - which is what I'm doing for years

      • Apply for yourself, get your partner as secondary card once approved
      • Both of you spend until reach the required amount
      • As you about reached the spending, get your partner apply the same card (because you don't need to spend on your card, have a new card line up ready)
      • Partner got approve and sign you up as secondary
      • Close your card once got the bonus points/cashback
      • Prepare to apply under your name for new card once your partner card about to reached the max spending requirement.
      • Rinse and repeat.

Don't keep a card for more than a year - cancel as soon got the points. I only kept cards like Amex (no AF) and Bendigo (no AF and no fx fees) for future usage as I don't intend to use them as regular spending.

This is quite a grind. Do you face issues with credit history etc? And also does this balance out with bonus points vs annual fees?

        • +2

LOL, what grind? Just do your daily spending as usual until you reached the requirement amount and move to next one.

I wouldn't care about credit history because I don't plan to get any loan - loan free for the last 20 years. Also, we are not in US where your loan capability is all depending on a arbitrary number. Some banks may not like too many applications in short period, but I have never have any issue with any of them , except with Westpac seems to started to rejected churners recently.

And also does this balance out with bonus points vs annual fees?

Always aimed for the ones with best returned of investment - low or no fees , less spend.

          • @timhn: Aah that makes sense. I think I'm drawn to the very big bonus points offered upon opening the account. Far more to be gained there than what I will spend in a year with point-for-dollar benefits. But does come with higher opening fees.
