Sunday Work on Anzac Week

I am a FT technician and my work has a planned maintenance on this Sunday (Anzac week) and they said it's not considered public holiday rather weekend rate which is 1.5x instead of 2.5x for public holiday.
Wondering if this is true?

  • Anzac day is Saturday this year. Sunday is not a public holiday.

    • similar to OP's Q … RE : OT rates.

WA specific - (unsure of other states) … some companies will be paying "public holiday rates" (double time) on SAT - most prob won't though.
Think majority will pay it on the actual observed holiday MON.

      best check your award/etc.

      With my work …
Sat is standard SAT rates of 1.5 (except for afew drivers which will be 2x - they are under a different award) … and the MON will be the 2x rates for all.

Now … lets not get started on hospitality industry.
Just hope we don't see surchages for dinners/etc - on BOTH Sat + Mon.

  • Yes, Anzac Day (April 25) is a public holiday across all Australian states and territories. In 2026, it falls on a Saturday, so it is observed on that day. Because it falls on a weekend, NSW, WA, and the ACT will observe an additional public holiday on Monday, April 27, while other states do not.

2026 Anzac Day Public Holiday Breakdown
Saturday 25 April: Public holiday in all states/territories.
Monday 27 April: Additional public holiday in NSW, WA, and the ACT.
VIC, QLD, SA, TAS, NT: Only Saturday April 25 is a public holiday; there is no substitute day for it falling on a weekend.

    • What you said is all correct but you didn't address the OP's question about Sunday being or not being a public holiday.

Sunday is not a public holiday.

    • That's not entirely true. Queensland moves the holiday (not an extra day) if ANZAC Day fails on a Sunday, as is the case in 2027.

      • That doesn't sound right, but apparently it's true.

I just read a partition to do likewise when it falls on a Saturday. Unfortunately the partition says that M-F workers miss the opportunity to celebrate on the Monday, which no one is going to consider credible. It got a reply consisting of 2 pages of waffle with no reason why we need Monday off if Anzac day is on a Sunday or why we shouldn't likewise for a Saturday, to final say they have no current plans to change.

    • VIC, QLD, SA, TAS, NT: Only Saturday April 25 is a public holiday; there is no substitute day for it falling on a weekend.

For VIC, it is made up by the extra public holiday on Friday, September 25 for the AFL Grand Final on the Saturday.

      • no it's not made up by AFL grand final eve, that's always a public holiday regardless of Anzac day falling on a Saturday, hence not "extra"

        • Yep, it's the other way around. We don't get the ANZAC Day moved to Monday because of the grand final eve public holdiay.

    • Need to improve your prompt game, your GPT response still doesn't answer OP's question

  • Anzac Week

Is it a whole week now?

Back in my day it was just one day and we called in Anzac Day.

    • Can’t wait for the Christmas month leave!

    • Ha don't be picky, i am just wanna make it clear it happens this week though

      • Depends if you start your calendar on Sundays or Mondays.

        • In Australia, a week starts on a Monday. Saturday & Sunday are called The WeekEND.

        • The discussion is about Anzac day/week. Not yee-haw yokel cowboy seppo day/week.

        • Our calendar starts on Saturday. Don’t we count?

      • Sure, but your work happens next week given it's Sunday.

  • Anzac Day is Saturday not Sunday

  • I'm just filthy that Monday isn't a public holiday for me.

    • Are you Victorian? If so you already get more than any other state , more always doesn’t hurt haha

      • I know Canberra doesn't exist for some people but still …

I used to FIFO there from Melbourne (no, I'm not politician related lol) so it was good to get those days without actually having to live there :P.

      • Yes. But not quite correct.

        From AI

"As of 2026, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and the Northern Territory (NT) generally have the most public holidays, with roughly 14-15 days, including local holidays. Victoria often leads in state-wide, non-regional holidays (13-14 days), specifically owing to unique days off for the AFL Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup"

Tasmania and Western Australia frequently have the fewest, around 11-12 days

OK I feel a little better.

        • I was careful to use “state” :)

  • Wondering if this is true?

Yes its true, your employer is correct.

  • Thanks all, getting my arse ready now, if any outage don't blame me

    • optus?

      • Isn't it happening often? So add one more wouldn't count aye?

    • giggity

  • Note that some states have double demerit points across the long weekend. Can't remember which ones though.

From memory it's only NSW, ACT and WA.

(seeing as that's from my memory, it's worthwhile checking for your particular state).

    • Possibly, I just came across it in a news article. I don't live in or won't be visiting any of the areas that were mentioned so I didn't pay enough attention to "lock it in".

Then I saw this thread, it reminded me, so just thought I'd give everyone a heads up so they can see if it affects them if they want.

Obligatory disclaimer: double demerits shouldn't bother anybody as they shouldn't be doing those things in the first place regardless of penalty being single or double.

  • It seems the misunderstanding is due to OP thinks that it's a week long commemoration (OP calls it Anzac Week) when it is just one day in the year, the 25th of April.

  • Anzac week? Since when?

  • i cant wait for my monday off

    • Neither can the rest of us - for entirely different reasons. Remember how quiet the roads were during COVID? Looking forward to that again.

  • Note that some states have double demerit points across the long weekend. Can't remember which ones though.

  • OP feels entitled to another public holiday as 2 are not enough.
Let alone they will get Sunday penalty rates for working on a Sunday.
    OMG!
