Aren't Tontine the cheap brand that have issues with the wool filling shedding out of their quilts?

    • I believe that's because of cotton. Wool filling can come out of cotton.

We have had this in a king for about 6 years and don't have this issue!

Good buying here IMHO…get the King size for a Queen size bed.

    • Are you serious? I that a good idea?

      • +34

I always upsize for a more generous fit. Gives more over hang which so holds the warmth in better for restless sleepers (or couples where on likes to hog more than their share).

        • …we all know which "one" is going to hog it too!

          • @ferguson: Fold it under the bed or get some improv straps.

      • +1

Yes, always oversize your quilt so visually it looks better on the bed (hangs over like in pictures).

But more importantly, when your spouse pulls the quilt and wraps themselves, you still have some left.

We run super king quilts on our king bed and it's a game changer. More expensive to buy covers though, which is a bit annoying, but other than that - no regrets.

    • Agree. A double quilt + doona on a single bed makes the best nest.

      • -3

Who single beds :) king baby!

  • +4

High quality and tontine don't belong together

  • They are all on sale so why just put king size?

    • There are other sizes/typed, also depends on if that's left, sale has been on a little while, different ones two weeks ago. This is not washable and this size is too large ⭕ for most machines. Buy when on special or in Aug / Sept for the next winter that are washable, or pick up 200 GSM or 300 GSM X 2, 3 or 4 in Mar / Apr.
$20.00 ± about end of '22 for a laundromat machine that could fit one of these sized babies in. Then you have to line dry them. Paying extra for washable ends up worth it in the long run unless you can afford dry cleaners.
Or buy two 300 GSM versions of 3 200gsm versions etc and double ⏩ them. Cotton is there too in a link I posted below 👇. Use the filters …

        Please 🙏 stop 🛑 writing ✍️ like 👍 this.

        • Why 🤔

💡 You used more than I did!

      • are you suggesting instead of this buying 4 lighter dooners?

        • Yes, if on special. If you have lighter quilts already, may be one or two. I currently have a 300 and a 200 GSM cotton quilt on my bed.

I usually buy two lighter ones and double them. If slightly too hot you can flip one off a bit. Plus you can use towards end of November sometimes into to December. Depending on location and from the end of summer/ beginning of Autumn.

Otherwise the 500 gsm doesn't get used till it is cold enough. The others can be used as described above.

If it gets really cold, add another. Used to sleep with up to three or a light cotton with the 500 GSM wool. Usually the 500 was good enough, depends on your house really.

          • @carrawa: How do you stop them from bunching up in the cover?

            • @reactor-au: I don't use covers anymore assuming you mean putting on a quilt cover. Too much stuffing around.

I did use individual covers which were a pain to put on and sometimes put two in one cover. Once in, I found the individual ones bunched more than two, but required some stuffing to get them in. But when you stack them two or three you didn't really have an issue, just when putting them in if they fit, depending on size.

I did plan to sew a cover onto each but never got around to it + their size.

Melbourne dfo or is there one I haven't heard of?

Oh I thought you meant for Harris scafe. Thanks for the link

        • Do you think it would be cheaper here?

          • @HaydosK: Outlets can be like dumping grounds. Nothing wrong with it, just some demented get rid of old stock mentality cheap to have customers pay more for new stock, and a lot of women do for new look/ styles etc.

May be they made their margin and those who chase bargains know when and where to go.

Some in store bargains are there not advertised online or old stock, but you need to drop in from time to time.

Spotlight specials are few and far between and disappear fast.

            • +1

@carrawa: Yes I do go to outlet stores but from your experience is it cheaper in store than through this deal?

              • -2

@HaydosK: It is the same price in store and online generally. Sometimes stores don't have stock and you need to call and check, that's why I buy online these days and usually more than one so no postage.

They do have some online only deals but usually as above.

Refer to my post below 👇 on the 300 GSM cotton Super King 👑 quilt. Might be better to get a few of them.

          • @HaydosK: Pre covid times it was and probably still is. They do post some offers on their Facebook page as well.

I bought from Linen Dreams ebay in the past. This one tempting though

    • What was your experience with them in terms of prices stock and availability or just really for clearance stuff?

      • +1

I've bought several from them for myself and parents in the past. The latest are cheaper quality so I won't buy from them again. They're still a good budget option (assuming the Australian made with Australian merino wool claim is still true) but the casing isn't cotton as claimed (they used to be) but some synthetic that's crinkly and noisy.

  • Is this one of those cheap crinkly sounding blankets? Can't sleep with those kind

    • Not crinkly!

500gsm feels too thick for Sydney. Maybe Tassies or Melbournians would benefit more.

    • +20

It's a shame this was posted on SydBargain and not some website that covers the whole country.

      • Well, it was more the fact that Harris Scarfe doesn't really exist in Sydney. 2 vs like 10+ in Melbourne and 5 in Tas.

    • Wool 🦙 acts differently. They dissipate heat better. I use mine from about this time through to about December unless it warms up sooner, depends on the year. Mine is a more expensive washable version from Gainsborough I think it is.
From memory this is not 🚫 washable. Plus you need a big machine to wash this size of quilt.
The real issue is do you heat your house 🏠 or does it hold heat. Do you wear 👖 PJ's or tracksuits to bed 🛏️? If not, should be fine.
I have slept with 500 gsm this over 25°c. It may depend on if you are a cold or warm sleeper and where you sleep in the house etc too.

    • What in the insulated inner Sydney house..

    Use the filter …

Quilt cotton Soren: 300gsm Super King 👑 $49.99 or 95. From I think 🤔 it was $29.95 for other sizes. Double ⏩ them up for 600gsm and use earlier and later in the year individually. Bigger is better, you might be able to fold in half depending on your circumstances, and size. If you have a 200 gsm layer it with the 300. A few spares for wet weather is better or when washing.

    https://www.harrisscarfe.com.au/home/bedding/quilts

3 options for cotton listed above. Use filters for other types, top option. HS screwed up their filters since I last used it for cotton quilts.

Free delivery was minimum $120.00 or $14.95. if you buy the cheaper smaller sizes it might pay to buy 3. Check what it tells you and your location.
Click on standard delivery or it may try to send you to click and collect.

    • Happen to have seen 200 GSM wool quilts washable around ? Super King

      • +1

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/130991598282?var=433003093077

Not sure about the washable part but we have been very happy with the 200GSM super king over the summer, about to put it away and move back to the 500/700 for the tassie winter.

      • -1

        No.

        Edit: Pillow Talk https://www.pillowtalk.com.au/bedroom/quilts/wool-quilt/

Adjust the filters for other options. 200 GSM wool 2nd on left at time of posting.

One listed here but not cheap in general. Forgot about Pillow Talk. Used to be near a clearance store but I found their good specials disappeared a few years before COVID. Better range though. They had cheaper blankets.

DFO Brisbane Airport if they still exist, check their directory. They sometimes had good deals in some bedding shops and one had a lot of tontine specials. I think the other store while smaller past Darra had better options but not as attractive and lots of empty stores. Hadn't been there since before COVID and hit if a trip by public transport.

There were quite a few about two years ago I saw in store and a think last year when I looked but usually they are 300 GSM and max king size.
They had 150 GSM once about 4 years ago but unless they are on special and washable I don't buy.
If you use something like Snooze tabby and it still works, you can add it to open to the above link and use it to change it to wool quilts with the appropriate filter. The specials randomly pop up and when you least expect them. I missed a lot of specials due to them happening just after I was there and selling out quickly or delaying buying then they ended.
Set it every month or fortnight.

Gainsborough 500 GSM Australian Washable Wool Quilt King Bed

    https://www.harrisscarfe.com.au/en-au/p/gainsborough-500-gsm…

    • +2

I'd never heard of gainsborough in terms of bedding before this thread yet apparently has been around for almost 50 years but haven't bothered to make a website. Really makes me wonder if it's the same gainsborough that sells cheap door hardware (once made locally, now OS and considered poor quality) and they're just an importer that sticks their own brand on stuff.

      • I have the 500 GSM version bought about 3.5 years ago. Going well still.

  • In terms of warmth, is this up there? I'm looking for a new quilt to provide better warmth for the Melbourne winter as my current one is just too thin. whats the next step up from this?

    • You have 500 GSM now? Try layering with another quilt.

Sometimes blankets are the way to go layered. Use their filters to see what they have.

  • I had this double layer wool quilt recommended https://www.halcyondreams.com.au/ultimate-3-in-1-all-seasons but at $394 for a queen I'm not in a rush. I'd prefer quality bedding, I don't think Tontine is it.

  • Bought one of these but goddam it was hot.
Had to give it to the misso because she sleeps colder, now we're both happy.

  • Great find, very warm and heavy, will be great for winter!

  • Does anyone own this? Wanting to purchase but so many reviews saying this sheds like crazy. Can anyone confirm or have they updated & fixed this issue somehow?
