This is pretty much the normal price.

    • +5

i shoved it up my …oh, never mind.

These are decent, I have two: one at the office and one in the car for camping duties. But they are always 18 bucks and have been for years.

  • +1

This is a very useful cooking accessory. It is very accurate, and I use it regularly.

    • -2

      It is very accurate,

      How do you know?

      • +4

It gives a number with a decimal place. That implies precision.

It must be accurate too, right?!

  • Love this. Got frustrated with my analog one that takes a minute to read correctly

  • +1

Can anyone recommend a bluetooth one ?

  • I have this. But anyone have a more waterproof version? It keeps going weird when I clean it and a bit of water goes on.

    • Are you submerging it? Submerging any temp probe messes with them, just give it a wipe.

  • +1

I got the probe version, comes in handy for roasts etc to just have it on hand and connects to the app to monitor temps from the couch

  • +2

I have this thermometer. Temp reading time and accuracy is the same as my $2 Aliexpress one.

  • This is a very useful little tool. We use it for lamb roast

    • -1

Get another then for chicken roast…

  • anyone able to recommend a good cooking thermometer?

  • Great to check that chicken is done. 82 degrees and bobs ya chicken.

    • +7

      That's woefully overcooked

      • -4

Being in hospital with salmonella has made me cautious. :) What do you make yours at?

        • +6

Pull it out at 65 and let it rest to bring it up to 68. This is in the thickest part of the breast btw.

          • @Del Boy: I know that anyone with one finger or thumb (and no brain) can give advice on the internet….. and there is no harm for me anyways….but I thought I'd get the chicken to answer the questions for anyone who is curious.

            • +3

@Naigrabzo: You asked and I provided my answer. Chicken held at 65 degrees for a minimum 4 minutes kills all salmonella. I can assure you any quality restaurant serving juicy, moist flavourful chicken is not cooking it to 75 degrees and certainly not ruining it at 82. This is common knowledge for any competent chef and home cook.

I am not debating 75 degrees will be noted as a standard on a government authority website on food safety, but this is a failsafe set figure so average Joe / Joanna who aren’t cooking all the time don't kill themselves or their families.

              • +2

@Del Boy: I've been eating my chicken ~68c for years. I'd risk Samonella over eating dried out chicken meat.

              • @Del Boy: Where did you say 4 minutes in your original answer? ;)

                • @Naigrabzo: Takes greater than 4 minutes to raise from 65 to 68.

              • @heatseeker424: Thanks for the facebook link mate…. :) I believe a chef over the food authority anyday.

Mine died recently… Won't turn on unless in the charger, so i think the switch is stuffed.

Replaced it with this one that reads instantly

    Only $7 more

    • +1

Thinking of getting this over the orange one. USB-C and IP67 is nice.

I’ve broken a few thermometers due to bending the probe too hard, hope this one lasts

      • +2

The probe on this one feels a bit more sturdier than the orange one.

Also, you can leave the proble open all the time.

It turns off after a few seconds, and any sudden change in probe temperature will turn it on, so no need for on/off switch.

    • +1

Did it have a high temperature before it died?

      • +1

        Nope, it just cooked.

    • +1

Thanks @jv… Bought one. Looks neater than the one posted here.

    • +1

      Is that instant one magnetic?

      • +1

Just checked it. It has a very strong magnet.

    • +2

Thanks JV. Just bought this one instead

    • +1

I have both, prefer the black model mentioned here.

    • +1

Here's me absolutely dying having to agree with jv on something, but I came here to say that anyone who buys this instead of paying slightly more to get the instant read version, is an absolute maniac. The difference to your cooking when you can poke and read, vs poke and wait a few seconds and read, is astounding. Genuinely makes a huge difference.
      Don't buy this version.

      • Disagree with you - buying this one for the waterproofing

  • -1

3 seconds is a bit long tbh

  • +1

Aliexpress (via choice deals) will get you 5 food thermometers for ~$16 delivered

    • Aliexpress electronics are not for longer term use. I think of them as disposable.

      • All electronic goods are disposable.

  • Not sure why this model gets promoted so much. For the same money there's others below. Both run on replaceable batteries so you're never stuck waiting for a recharge - just swap and go. As others mentioned above, AliExpress probably has something near identical for cheaper too.

    Eg.
    https://amzn.asia/d/0fUEhBsr
    https://amzn.asia/d/0f9VimwH

    • Both run on replaceable batteries so you're never stuck waiting for a recharge

I've only had to recharge about once a year, and even then, the battery was barely below half.

    • I think it's reputable brand but those others might be good as well! Consumer electronics would be expected to have a 7 year life. The battery could last that long….not sure.

  • These are decent.

My thermapen $100+ has cracks after being dropped a couple of times.

Please for the love of all that is holy and just in the world, spend a little bit more and buy the instant read version. Three seconds reading time is an eternity when you're trying to work out whether something is cooked and need to flit around a few places to get a good read.
It's hardly more, but the difference is astounding. Worth every penny for instant read.
