Southern China Airlines - 36 Hour Layover in China - Hotel Question

I am travelling with southern china to Europe soon.

Originally my flight would land in Guangzhou at 6am and depart at 11pm the same day. That was cool. Would give me time to sightsee .

Recently my booking changed and I am leaving Australia 12 hours earlier so I’ll arrive in Guangzhou at 6pm and fly out 11 pm the next day.

Questions- I have heard that when there is a stop over for more than X hours then the airline would provide accommodation, as I booked through aunt Betty then would this still happen? Or should I book my own accommodation?

Thank you .

I think you should be able to get the free accommodation.

We booked through BYOJet, which is actually the same company as 'Aunt Betty', and it worked for us. If you go to the China Southern Airlines website and enter your ticket details, you should see a “Book Free Accommodation” button.

The hotel provided was 'Southern Airlines Pearl Hotel'. The default booking is usually a twin-share room. If there are two of you, just enter both ticket numbers. Otherwise, you can pay a little extra to have the room to yourself — I think it was around $30–$40 extra.

We actually just completed this flight last week.

The hotel is about 10 minutes from the terminal. After arrival, once you’ve passed customs and collected your luggage, go to the transfer counter near Gate 50. Just note that this is 'not the boarding gate'— it’s the terminal gate area. Also, the transfer counter is 'not the check-in / boarding pass counter'; it’s located in the main arrivals hall.

    • I am going through their website but they are not recongising booking. I bought through Booking.com

I also email their customer service but yet to hear back and it's been 2 weeks.

did you try the ticket number? not the reservation number?

        • +1

It was not recognising flight number but eventually got it sorted.

I am travelling alone so I had to select shared room as apparently you need to book transit hotel upon arrival if travelling single.

as I booked through aunt Betty

Why don't you ask your aunt?

    Currently in the hotel.

Booked the hotel through the southern China airlines website. There’s a tab for “accommodation “

You use your 11(?) digit booking number - starts with 7465(or similar). To book

Just enter your details and confirmation is instant.

The shuttle leaves to and from the airport every 30 minutes.
There’s a southern China desk at exit gate 50 (on the ground floor in the domestic flight section of the airport)

The hotel is about 10 minutes away.

The room is very decent. No complaints. It’s clean, a good size. Bed is very comfortable . The breakfast buffet 6-10am is very good.

There are local restaurants nearby. The street across from the hotel lobby. Most have pictures of food for easy ordering. I used a translate app to explain my dietary requirements. I used tap’n’go with my Bankwest card. (I showed the restaurant guy my card prior and he thumbed up) . I also have alipay (super simple to set up) which I used at McDonalds later to get a pineapple pie . There’s a 7-11 and maccas around the front side of the hotel.

    • What was included in the breakfast?

      • +1

        Medium size buffet. No cereal.

Various breads, multiple salads, some meats, fruit, hot drinks (coffee, tea, soy milk , corn milk)
        Boiled eggs. A noodle dish

        It was all good.

They were bringing out fresh food whilst we’re. And cleaning tables regularly.

All up the experience was very good.

        • Note. When booking your flights via a 3rd party (I used aunt Betty and booked meals and seats).

None of that(seats and meals) transferred to the airline website booking.

So my partner and I were given separate seats when checking in last night. There was a cost to sit together as the middle seat of the outer 3 rows was considered “premium” and would cost $80 to book 400RMB .

We then asked at the gate to sit together and they made it happen

I also didn’t have my dietary meal ;(

From the main page there are links to book meals and seats. Some seats on some routes in economy cost to book. Dependent on the flight route

I'm always intrigued by this coz I am looking at the same route a you.
    Found this: https://www.csair.com/mcms/mcmsNewSite/en/cn/build/index.htm….

Is it correct for me to assume your flights are all booked thru China Southern under one Booking Number?
If so, I would have thought when they advise you of the change, they would have told you the repurcussions and your entitlements?

The last time my flight got changed by them, they include a line to say I can ask for the Refund, and here's the link!

    • -1

      Yes, one number.

No repercussions or entitlements that I can recall. Though I’ll recheck the email.

  • If they do provide a hotel it will need to be done through Aunt Betty.

  • You could've googled this in less time than it took to make this post.

dude thats so lazy.. and hence the downvotes…

Why should other spend time googling for you? are you handicapped?

        • -5

          Yes, i am handicapped.

Regardless, I am seeking guidance from people who may have experienced this situation.

Because just googling doesn’t always provide accurate or concise information.

Also, having real world experience (like a user’s comment below) provides actual experience.

            @altomic: haha damn… check mate.

I'll be helpful as I have had experience with CSA before.

            1) Check with CSA (email their customer service - they actually reply pretty promptly) regarding hotel stay. It was complimentary for me previously but it was their airport hotel and it was for certain booking classes.

            2) The biggest issue is Guangzhou Airport is not close the main city and airport hotel is near the airport… so you will need to make your own way into town. I think it was 45 mins.

            3) by the time you land and exit the airport, you will be late into the night so need to plan given the travel time mentioned above.

  • Do you have travel insurance?

    • -2

How would that assist? (Genuine question)

      • Depending on your cover, you can be reimbursed for accommodation if there have been changes to your flight which was beyond your control.

        • cool. I'll keep that in mind. cheers

  • Are you sure it is Quanzhou, not Guangzhou? Different city :)

    • Guangzhou it is. Thanks

      • Quanzhou is also a legit city.

        Double check your ticket.

  • Are you sure it's Quanzhou? Southern China airline is based in Guangzhou.

    • My bad. Guangzhou

  • Enjoy your free stay in a run down old hotel or book your own if you want something decent.

    • +4

the condition of the Airport hotel wasn't quite "run down" but its in the middle of no where and it feels like a ghost hotel / covid hotel. Minimal amenities.

When I stayed it was just for the night and we had an earlier flight the next day so didn't really make sense to stay elsehwere / in town. Wasn't quite strapped in for a bender…

      • How about the food options? Any nearby restaurants and/or convenience store?

        • +1

nope but the hotel made decent food (and was well priced). I think there might have been a convenience store (maybe?) but not sure how payment would work..

If you have more time, suggest just going into town and then comig back to crash.

        • There is a street across literally across from the lobby that is full of restaurants (~20+).

There was a great place we went to and loved the food

There’s a 7-11 and McDonald’s around the front of the hotel. And some restaurants and. A KFC across the large road to the front of the hotel.
