VEU - Quote (Seems Too High)

Hi All,

I have a 13 KW Solar and a 13 KWh battery at my PPOR. For a while (despite battery installed of lower capacity) I have been thinking to get onto the VEU bus to decommission ducted gas heating at home for a while. We are in Victoria and I have started looking for quotes. I consulted https://www.ezyair.com.au/ and the quote they have come seems a bit too high. Details here:

We are in Melbourne's south east. Keen to know what do you think of quote. I was really wishing with existing rebates to get something in range of $5000 but looks like inflation has played a role here too. Not keen on super cheap Chinese brands but something in mid range. Please let me know if there are other reasonable vendors that you have used in this region I can go and talk to. Else its a journey to search google and approach everyone (Too many 5 star google reviews seems manufactured too but I may be overthinking).

Thanks

you are dreaming. Cheap hisense - you are looking at $8-9k after rebates these days. This quote is reasonable.

Just remember what ever quote you get in Vic works out the same in other states. I.e there is no real discount/rebate - the invoice is inflated by the amount of the rebate and then discounted by it. Basically a free hand out to the installer for operating in Vic lol. FYI mine was around 11-12k for a 12.5 mitsi elec with 8 outlets and 6 zones + Airtouch 5 + R1.5 ducting. Unsure if your quote includes airtouch/myair but if it doesn't that's a really expensive quote especially for only 2 zones lol.

As above if your budget is 5k splits might make more sense.

    • Sucks that the rebates are not policed properly. The unit seems to retail for approx $6000, so an extra $10,000 for labour seems ridiculous. Then a rebate to bring it to $12,000. Insane.

    VTS & VEU

    • I came here thinking about Vanguard too.

    • VGS

I have a four bedroom home and spent 6k on a ducted refrigerated system through the scheme. I then had to spend another 10k reinstalling the whole system because the rebate company sent clueless tradies who installed it completely incorrectly.

    Stay away id say.

    • Yes I read your post. Not a great outcome.

    • reported the cowboys

Yes, VEU rebates are abused by all installers.

$5000 for that many rooms? Tell him he’s dreamin’!

We got quotes for ducted v splits (single and multi) and found single splits far cheaper for our house size. That being said, we didn’t put them in every room - we only got 4 (lounge, kitchen/dining, master, office), but most of the time we only have 2 on and they cool/heat the whole house very well. But we ended up choosing our sparky and foregoing any rebate, and it was still cheaper.

Thanks, by single splits, do you mean a window unit in every room? Your idea seems to make more sense to me as we have a large 8KW reverse pump in common area that does its job but just is too small for entire house. We dont really want to heat entire place at night. Daytime common areas make sense and at night just the bedrooms. Great idea. Thanks again.

Why'd you only get one quote? Get at least 3 from different places and then compare.

    • Recommended. Also get one from the expensive guys, they might suggest some features you hadn't considered.

Maybe try quoting DPheatingcooling.com.au. I've been quoting split systems for my 4 bedroom place with VEU and these guys came out very competitive for me with the Fujitsu brand. I haven't proceeded as yet for other reasons, so can't advise on their installation, but their reviews look good.

We got our ducted heating and cooling upgraded 6 months ago and used All Aspects Heating/Cooling which is out east. Give Aaron a call. We were very happy and our friends have also since used them and were also happy. Very reasonable pricing. We have a 4br home, got a Panasonic 18kW, 9 zones (put beds on diff zones), 13 outlets, incl MyAir. Highly recommend going through a dedicated heating/cooling specialist as opposed to the cowboys set up to just get a quick profit.
I have no affiliation with the company, but was very happy with their work and service.

    • Do you mind if I DM you friend? Just wanted to get an idea

    • What was the total cost for this installed?

I've used ezyair and find them one of the better trades to work with. Their prices are fair, they turn up on time, they do excellent work and clean up their mess.

That's a lot of outlets! I imagine that's where the cost is. Ezyair installed my 9kW single split system, just one unit, no ducts. This is augmented by fans in the bedrooms and underfloor heating (above slab, under carpet) heating… But that's more the belt and suspenders approach and not really required but I'm barefoot year round. The fans are awesome - but when we said we wanted them when designing the house they added 30cm to the ceiling height, ideally you need 2.7m ceilings to use fans. A 2.4m ceiling, just don't give your kids a piggy back.

Comes down I guess to what star rating your house is. 6-star needs lots of heating and cooling. My 8-star doesn't need much. A 10 star in theory needs none.

Maybe you have option to go the single split units and target key living (day) zones and just add what you need and add to that over time either by more systems or by changes to the energy efficiency of your house.

  • Got few veu rebates installers comes to quote to decommission gas ducted and replaced with multi heads to three indoor units. Only multi head replacement and kWh as high as possible to get maximum rebates. Sadly all jacked up to sell. I simply took the unit models and if buy off from aircon warehouse, it was so much cheaper though excluding installation. Or also much cheaper if I go for back to back installation split system but all them prefer to offer multi head only option.
