[iOS] Free Lifetime Licence: Converty Camera-Based Real-Time Currency Converter @ Apple App Store

810

I built Converty because I travel often and wanted a way to see prices in my home currency instantly without manual typing.

The app uses your camera to scan price tags and convert them in real-time.

I have a problem: I cannot travel everywhere to test how the scanner handles different price tag layouts in most of the world's countries. I need your help to improve the scanning process.

🎁 I am giving lifetime full access to everyone who helps me test it.

What it does:
* Scans price tags via camera for instant conversion.
* Works in real-time as you move your phone. 📷
* Supports 166 global currencies.
* Works offline, even somewhere deep in a supermarket. 🏪
* Cart mode (add items to the cart, so you won't be surprised at the checkout)

How to claim lifetime access:

  1. Download the app by the link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/currency-converter-converty/id…
  2. Open the app, go to Menu, scroll to the bottom. Tap on the text "App Version" 10 times and you'll see the progress spinner instead of the version value (1.6) for a second or so.
  3. At this point the access has been granted and attached to your device (if you have access to the internet)
  4. If you want to keep the access on the future devices, you need to Sign in with Apple (Menu), signing in lets you to keep access attached to your Apple ID.

🙏 I appreciate honest feedback on how it works and if you faced with any issues.

That's a feature requested by users. I assume, if you're shopping and have a bag in one hand and the phone in the other one and you're not comfortable typing the price

About as lazy as half of Aussies who cant get off their couch and drive down to get dinner.

      • That's Australian irony

    • +9

Lol if he would have been lazy, he wouldn’t have built an app.

    • Lazy argument is weak - in comparison to the 20th century everything done in modernity for convenience would be "lazy".
Cars instead of walking, online food ordering, doordash, microwaves, electric kettles

  • It’s an interesting idea, but the price detection is a little buggy, if it’s 3 digit number it may only detect the first two digits, of detect the first two digits and then the 3 digits after

  • Do like the idea. Thanks for sharing

      You're welcome!

I did a quick test and think you should add support for the macro lens, especially since price stickers can be tiny.

Or if you do support macro, it didn't work on my iPhone 15 Pro Max.

    • Good suggestion, same

    • amazing feedback! I'll do it in the next update, thank you!

imagine how much you have to hate to hate on a random unrelated harmless post that can potentially help you

      • -1

My gripe has to do with so much random free junk plastered all over the front page.

Like it's ozbargain. The big word here being bargain. No one is calling this a bargain. Its a good to know at best.

  • Free Lifetime Licence

That's what I need on my driver licence and IDs.

  • Thank you ! I'm in .

    • You're welcome!

@iosappdev Awesome apps. That would be good if the apps can scan from library picture. I travel with my family and from time to time, when we travel we took the photo of items and including price tags and share it in WhatsApp group. So that’s would be additional feature If the apps can scan from library picture. Thanks.

Amazing, I like the idea, I'll publish that feature in the next update!

    thanks for the app,

but really, so hard to do some basic maths in your head?

    • +2

If the foreign currency is closed to our then yes - ie, AUD$1 is about $1.10 or $0.90 other currency. But where you going, the AUD$1 is about VND$18,000, you likely pull out your phone to work out how much a bowl of Pho in VND$89,500 costs in AUD$ , and then times that by 4.

At the end, I just round it as $1 is 20,000 VND to make it easier to do maths in head.

      • not exactly rocket science,
nothing youd need to get your phone out for, in case youre off by a dollar or two lol

        • Well, let me tell you how the idea came to me.

I lost my job when I moved from one country to another. After ~8 months of looking for a job and working on some low-pay freelance jobs, I've started noticing that my budget has gotten quite low. I had to know exactly how much something would cost me. For those ~8 months, the situation in the world became more and more unstable, and the currency rates for the country where I moved from (my main bank account) were different week by week, sometimes better, sometimes worse.

The whole idea of the app is designed for people who need more precise budget planning in their travels/moving to other countries. Of course, there were better times when I wouldn't notice a huge difference between $50 and $55 of shopping for the same cart in just a month. But on rainy days, I just had to know more precisely.

Downloaded and will try it out when travelling.

One possible suggestion for the currency detection feature, use the GPS location of the handset to determine which country the user is at.

    • +1

Well, I thought about this and I think people might have concerns about that simple app using location updates..

  • Hey, I am off to South Africa for 3 weeks. I will test it out. I noticed that Africa wasn’t in your list of continents of travel destinations at the beginning and made me think that it wasn’t included…

    • It supports 166 currencies and uses mid-market conversion rates. And it can practically recognize even hand-written price tags, but if the writing looks accurately.
In the beginning there are 4 options to answer for the understanding what continent is the most desired for travelers. It should be working in South Africa, even offline.

Just select South African Rand and you're good to go :)

  • Looks interesting. I'll give it a try, but I don't think the drive to the Sutherland Shire counts as another country, so I'll have to wait until I'm allowed to go overseas again…

One suggestion - can you add the option to remove haptic feedback?

    • Sure thing, I'll add such an option to the Menu soon :)

      thank you for the feedback!

  • Are you planning to release an android version?

    • Not yet, I'm an iOS engineer and not sure I can do it for Android… will see

  • +3

Very good for elderly or people who are easily confused - avoid accidentally paying too much.

Also the scanning price helps people who struggle with finger dexterity on phones.

Nice idea OP - thanks for sharing

    • Thank you so much for the feedback!

  • Will give it a shot. Just don’t know when I will be travelling OS again. Best of luck with the app. It is nice to have something that is confirming your “basic maths”.

    • Thanks! Please, let me know if you'll face with any issues in the app, I'll do my best!

  • Thank you so much for the feedback!

Great app, I like the simple thoughtful design. Will use it more on my upcoming trips. It got me thinking it would even more useful if it had a native iOS widget so it could open from my lock screen. I know I could make a Shortcut already and get it to open the app from my lock screen. However, it could be a great way to entice users into the premium option. I believe that’s what Flighty does too.

    Thanks again OP!

    • +1

That's actually a great idea! I'll dig into this direction and I think I can add these widgets and quick shortcuts in the next update. Thank you for suggesting!

  • Would be good if image detection would work on computer screens as well. E.g. for Spotify:

    Premium
    Platinum
Your next bill is for INR 299.00 on 01/05/2026.
    Saved card *** 1234 | /

When I point the camera at it, it gets confused and puts a bunch of prices none of which are accurate conversions to A$. Also sometimes the pop-up text (conversion) that comes goes under the fixed text on screen.

    • Hmm.. It should work even with scanned prices displayed on any screen. I think the problem here might be that it cannot recognize "INR" as a currency. I'll fix it soon and update the app.

    • UPD: Just checked, INR 299.00 is supported format, I guess, the text on the screen was too small to recognize it.

      • When you add support for INR you can also include the newer symbol ₹.

        • I'll add it, thank you!

  • Tapping 10 times didn’t work for me. Am I doing something wrong?

    • Could you, please, tap on "uID" on Menu and paste the copied value here? I'll check the access in the system and grand lifetime access there if you had any problems activating it :)

      • 81b7a2d321774e10933c63608ab1fb64

        • The system shows you have been granted access. To keep it attached to your apple account you just need to Sign in with Apple and that's all. On the Pro access screen it should show you "Pro access active".

  • I wish I could get this app for the future but without an iPhone I can't. I know it's not the developers fault but I really wish Apple would do the same thing that the Play Store does, in that you can add it to your library and install it later. Wishful thinking I guess.

    • I don't know if I can write the same app for Android, will see. But in case if you'll have the iPhone, you're welcome to send me an email (support section) and I'll give you lifetime access :)

  • Nice app, just came back from 3 weeks in Asia and would have loved this! My suggestion would be to allow multiple currencies in the main calculator view so you can quickly switch. If you then allow tapping the currencies directly you can switch quickly between your ‘favourite’ currencies.

    • I like that idea. Probably, I'll add it soon :)

  • Only for iPhone… Wow

    • At least for now, I'm an iOS dev for 7 years and haven't work with Android. Maybe some day…

  • This is not an IAP, it's lifetime of device, not iCloud account. Goes away on device upgrade.

    • Well, if you just Sign in with Apple it will be attached to your account, even if change the device. Plus, I've tested another scenario: If you buy another apple device and install it, then go to the app (without signing in with apple) you still have access. But if you delete the app or reset your device and then buy another one, you won't have access unless you signed in with apple before that.

  • Have not try it since I won't travel overseas until end of the year but may be OP can add features like sum of items scanned - like shopping list, just scan several items and the total displaying in real time.

    • +1

Yes, this feature actually exists. You can add items to the cart and then open it and see number of items, total cost in 2 currencies. I'm working on the features like control your cart with voice and Siri + Dynamic Island widget showing your cart. Will be soon

  • Sadly I just saw this post and installed your app today as I was just in Armenia when you originally posted this. I’m in Georgia right now so I’ll give it a go tomorrow in the grocery store here. Thanks this app will be very useful to me and the wife on our travels.

    • You're welcome! please, tell me how it works there!

  • Hi just downloaded the app as I’m planning some trips in the coming months. As I am currently testing the features I realised I cannot end the app, it’s always sitting with the value “$0.00” in my Dynamic Island in my iPhone. How do I end the app, please not I am unable to end the app by swiping the app up to close it.
