The MG HS Super Hybrid PHEV has just had a sharp price cut…

Super Hybrid Excite now $42,990 (was $47,990)
Super Hybrid Essence now $46,990 (was $51,990)

A saving of $5,000 or roughly 10%.

You’re getting a plug-in hybrid with up to 120km of electric range (WLTP), meaning most daily driving can be done purely on EV power. It also claims just 0.7L/100km fuel consumption, thanks to the 1.5L turbo + electric setup producing 220kW and 350Nm.

  • The fuel consumption rates on PHEV vehicles are always on a distance where the battery still has charge. Once you're after the 100km, the engine doesn't miraculously drive at 0.7L/100.

    • And you need to be driving quite calmly for the engine not to kick in.

  • Seems like a better buy than the Sealion 6 or Haval H6 on paper?

    • H6 Ultra PHEV supports much faster charging and larger display, but the range is lower with a smaller battery (19 vs. 24kwh)

    • Carsauce has a very positive review of the H6 Ultra, which is the top spec with AWD and $45k da.

    • What about Sealion 5?

  • No DC charging, this thing is dead in the water. Such a shame, I don't know why MG nerfs their products like this (see also the comically small batteries in the MG4 Urban)

    • 2 battery variants, depending on your needs and budget. Atto 1 would be struggle for anyone in cheapest form, just isn’t a nice car and range is pathetic…

    • i dunno, maybe people on the budget end dont want to install full charging infastrcture in their house, and it charges fast enough overnight with the small battery?
and dont need to use a public charger as its a hybrid

      • You're right, GWM, Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo are idiots for putting DC charging in their PHEV competitors. Who would want the extra option to fast charge on the go when charging is cheaper than petrol? Especially when GWMs product has AWD and more standard gear for the same price as one of these. Enjoy your compromised MG!

        • I wouldn't buy any of these shitboxes, just providing a reason why

          • @Lonewolf1983: Not a good reason. The only reason is cost cutting in the hope consumers won't notice. Mazda did the same with their PHEV CX-60 and it ought to be called out (that isn't even a cheap car).

            • @xyron: Up to the consumer to decide with their money

              • @Lonewolf1983: I mean, I don't disagree with you, but why are you defending MG's shit decision to avoid DC charging in this model if the best defence is "it's up to the buyers"? It's not like this car is being sold at a discount compared to its direct competitors (Tiggo 8, Jaecoo J7 SHS, GWM Haval H6 PHEV) to make up for it. And, what's worse, this has a bigger battery than all of them, so could actually benefit from DC charging.

It doesn't even have 22kw AC charging for charging at shopping centres and other public 22kw chargers (or homes with 3 phase!)

(I am particularly frustrated as I would have been tempted by this model if it wasn't for the DC charging oversight).

                • @xyron: Not defending, sure it would be great if it had it, and more power, and bigger battery and was cheaper but thats economics.
Wait for the next model, maybe they will add it

  • I reckon the Geely EX5 Complete is a better buy, full EV, similar size 4.6m nice interior etc, each to their own.
