Firstly the HSBC Star Alliance credit card does have foreign transaction fees
Secondly was the amount in AUD, USD or another currency?

Congratulations on your gold stars (awarded for not piggybacking off the first comment). Well done!

Wow, I didn't know you could still book flights with Australian National Airways.

ANA: All Nippon Airways

You're wrong! The person commented above correct

Turn off the international transaction on the card then try?

i think its a bank error in your favor, collect $200.

I expect they processed the payment in Japan hence the fee. Was it a .au website or a .jp website? If it was .au then ANA should really make it explicit where the payment is processed if not in Australia.

If charged in AUD the bank made an error, if charged in Yen (which it appears to have been), the there would be a disclaimer somewhere that you missed, stating that fares will be charged in Yen.

Some banks still charge a FTF even if the transaction was made in AUD e.g. Westpac, because the business taking the payment is based overseas.

I recalled ana au site is Sydney based.

They charged me in AUD last year.

The HSBC Star Alliance credit card charges a fee for purchases made outside of australia regardless of what currency you are paying in.
You'd get charged the same foreign fee buying from Temu in A$.
This card really should not be used for purchases made outside of Australia even if in A$. Just use it within Australia, but apart from the sign up bonus it's not a good ongoing card.
I do think it's quite dumb that cards like this and the Amex Cards that are aimed at travellers also charge a fee for transactions made overseas.
Gotta say there are some good airfare deals with ANA at the moment.
Yesterday I purchased multicity flights for February to Japan, US and Canada (5 flights in total) for $3455 for 2 people.
Which was only a couple of hundred more than the return flights just to Japan on those dates.
Also as nice bonus (unlike HSBC) ANA doesn't charge credit card fees on their tickets.
