I've had automatic machines, but I prefer my breville express impress that I have now. Depends how much coffee you make, automatic machines are great if you make a lot of coffee, but I only make a couple a day. Grind, tamp, extract is a piece of cake, steam milk if I feel like it. Dropping the puck straight in the compost twice a day is easier than cleaning out an internal puck container daily.

It helped that it was only like $500 for a refurb on breville's ebay store when I got it. Just need to wait for an ebay discount that works on their outlet store.

No machine needed, just pour the beans from fridge into cup and done …

    D'Longhi Automatic

I've had delonghi machines for years now, and they have always been great, and very reliable. I run a coffee club for my work, and we have multiple of these machines getting thrashed all day, and they never miss a beat. The internals in the basic model machines (magnifica) are the same as the more expensive ones, so no worries there (the expensive ones just have the screens and auto milk systems). You can often get the basic machines for around $500.

I bought one of the breville express machines after being impressed with a mates one. Three of us have them now though of course bean selection is also important.

I got a Breville Barista Pro - which has been pretty good

I avoided an integrated machine in case the grinder broke and I’d have to throw the whole thing out. So I hedged my bets and got 2 separate machines. The Sunbeam MiniBarista EM4300 $300 and coffee grinder EM0440 $100 have been going strong (2 coffees a day) for 5 years! A great investment for $400.

    • Wise. I bought an integrated machine and the motor of the grinder wore out (specifically the brushes). I could only reuse the jug from the machine :(

You could always replace the brushes.

        • Yeh, I tried but failed.

Seeing sparks fly out of the grinder was cool and scary at the same time.

          • @skid: Nice work, at least you gave it a crack, everything just seems to be throwaway these days. Also got a free fireworks show.

  • I have had a Smeg Bean-to-Cup for the last 4 years, its great! No complaints at all and small profile on the benchtop. Can find them for around $600 on a deal.

      No complaints at all

I wouldn't complain either to someone named Gunther

Depends if I am a WWE professional wrestler or the Central Perk coffee house barista…

  • Phillips Lattego - any model

  • Do you need another machine for milk to cup?

  • Are you open to other options? I appreciate coffee is very personal. My recommendation is a grinder and good stainless steel moka (stove top) pot. And well under half your stated budget.

Are you open to other options?

Like tea, or hot chocolate ?

      • Ha ha ha yes, those too. Nice one. 😃👍

  • I no longer go thru the time consuming hassle of using either a coffee machine or grinder.

I now simply add 20ml of Nescafé Espresso Coffee Concentrate (100% Arabica beans) plus milk & water to a cup, microwave it for about 1 min 40 seconds, and voila, a hot cup of Arabica coffee in short order!

Now making coffee each morning is no longer a chore!

A dirt cheap option for your daily coffee!

  • Try to get a second hand or refurbished Jura unit. We have the ENA8 and it’s been great so far, does 7-8 cups a day.

  • The newish Ninja around $600-$700 (sorry, don't have model number to hand) is getting very good reviews and is said to be excellent value for that price point. Someone else has mentioned the Breville and its a good machine, but I'd give the Ninja a view. They're putting out interesting well thought-out gear right now.

Added: If I was going through all this again, I'd buy secondhand. Occasionally there's real bargains out there on Marketplace. They're an expensive bit of gear new.

    • I've been doing a bunch of research today on the Ninja and it's got a lot of mixed reviews. I've heard of parts breaking after 4 months, customer service being difficult to contact. Issues with milk temp, small drip tray etc.

But that being said, it was a bunch of coffee snobs on reddit… soooo yeah.
