  • [VIC] One Off 20% Rebate on Car Registration @ VIC Government
    Merged from deal

The Victorian Premier has announced that starting 1 June 2026, Victorians will be eligible to claim a 20% refund on the full cost of their car registration. To help ease cost-of-living pressures, individuals can claim this refund for up to two cars per person. Further details are expected to be released soon.

    • just in time for the next election.

      • and if after all these freebies and still lost, whoever next will have to fill the sink hole they created, for the (language) there is nothing to loose

        • But… your going to apply for it anyway.

          • @Baldrik: Of course as there are no free lunch, they can give it to you with 1 hand, they will take it back more with the other hand. So if I am not going to take it, I will be even worst off. If there is no such offer, I am not crying for 1.

        • Welcome to modern politics of the last few decades.

There is basically 0 chance that Viclib will take back government, but Labor will definitely lose multiple, just remains to be seen who takes them.

        • Yes the Vic Govt is draining the coffers as they know they are going to lose.
Just like the State Labor Govt did in Qld.
The Vic Govt owes more money than the other states combined.
And Victorians think this is a good thing?
It means no money for the services provided by the state government so dont complain when there are no police with crime out of control (as it is) or you cant get into a hospital etc

          • @Dr Phil: "The Vic Govt owes more money than the other states combined."

A quick Google search shows your claim is not true. If you believe it is, prove it.

Per Capita Debt: Victoria has the highest debt per person among the states, with figures nearing $20,000.
Alternative Measure: While Victoria has the highest overall debt, the Northern Territory has the highest net debt per capita in the nation at nearly $48,000 per person, according to 2025-26 budget projections.

              • @Murkymerv: That's not any evidence of this statement

"The Vic Govt owes more money than the other states combined."

                That claim is false/a lie.

              • @Murkymerv: When only 2 parties can get into power guess what?? There's really only 1 party.

                They are the same party.

You have the illusion of choice to keep you calm and compliant.

                • @OBEY YOUR MASTERS: Actually , that is a false assumption on your part . I have no faith in the two party duopoly 💯

                  • @Murkymerv: Then we are on the same page my friend. The Liberals bring in the bad ideas and the Labors make them even worse. It's self re-enforcing cycle that we can never escape from.

          • @Dr Phil: Australia , the socialist country ✅

            • @Murkymerv: A socialist country that doesn't even tax it's gas companies properly?

              Socialist for the rich, yes.

            • @Murkymerv: Feel free to emigrate to the USA and raise the IQ of both countries.

Let me guess. You and your family weren't born, raised and edcated here. You don't and have never used road, rail or air infrastructure, or health, police and legal services. You never played or watched sport live. You refused to take tax cuts and other govt handouts, during the GFC and covid especially. You're living off-grid so that you don't impinge on taxpayer funded lines and poles. You're donating an equivalent amount of your annual super contibutions to charity or possibly the LNP, who as you know gave Big Gas a free ride on our backs to the tune of at least $100B.

      • Are you telling me, they treat the public as dumb as sheep ?

        • I hope Greens/Independents win more seats in upcoming elections, which could help in putting more pressure on federal govt. to tax top 1% and at least 25% on gas exports! The Labor seriously need to do something about all-time high income inequality rather than dolling out free money and chocking the middle class (OzBargainers community largely) further.

          • @AnirudhD: no business will donate to them for the next election if they do that. Legalized corruption would pump so munch money into One Nation that they become the opposition.

            • @Creamsoda: so not worried about the $15B gone to the bikies and the CFMEU, just worried about One Nation (who i dont vote for by the way) taking political donations?

              • @2ndeffort: What does fixing income inequality have anything to do with corrupt CFMEU?

          • @AnirudhD: People like to think they're middle class, but they usually aren't.

          • @AnirudhD: Greens vote means a vote for labor , correct me if I'm wrong ⁉️

            • @Murkymerv: You can specify your preference. eg Greens 1, DLP 2 etc…

        • Should boycott this.

        • Since they voted labour back in after Dan/Covid wouldn’t you also treat them as dumb sheep?!?!?

        • In fact, the problem is most of the imports who are NOT working and getting all the possible benefits and their kids are either stealing cars or carrying a machete killing someone are believing and will support the B

      • You can accept the rebate without voting for them more on

    • Just in time to be duped into oblivion.

    • The Victorian government is really digging deep now on bankrupting the state, after nailing lawlessness.

Apparently it will cost the budget $700 million, someone has to pay, I would watch out if I owned property or assets in Victoria.

      • Oh no won't someone think if the poor landlords

        • I’m sorry your going to get negged…

My landlord and I have had over 12 months of communications for a flyscreen fix… we are getting there…

          • @Zuelly: I was told rent was going up $80 a week. I said hey can we get some bloody fly screens installed as we can’t even ventilate the house?

They said yes, but due to this there will be no negotiation about rent increase. “Due to works about to be completed”

7 months later still no fly screens installed, although they’ve come for a measure and quoted $1500 installed.

But they’re coming in the next few weeks, just in time for winter…

            • @Mike Huntissaur: Wth. Fly screen cost between $150-$300 ($150 if you know where to shop, dont go bunnings, there are too many shop around, way cheaper than bunnings) labour $200-$400 depending on area and how far, its pretty much straightforward, nothing difficult and under an hour.

I’m not sure if they overcharged your landlord or I’m undercharged my clients. Hmmmmmm

            • @Mike Huntissaur: Opened report: 11/5/2025
Emails every 3 to a month, awaiting owner approval.
Managed to get quote after threatening to get TenantsVic involved: 6/2/2026
              Paid quote: 15/4/2026

5-6 week lead time for installation, but atleast I know its coming….

        • They'll pass the cost over to you, genius.

          • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Tell me you live in the gong without telling me you live in the gong.

            • @Zuelly: At least our property prices appreciate over here, and we haven't been overun with immigrants terrorising us with machetes. There is nothing about your state which is even remotely as close to as good as what we have up here.

              • @Lets Make Sandwiches: You sound very educated in a state you don’t live in…

Anything else you want to tell me about where I live?
Seems like your an expert :)

                • @Zuelly: Do I need to live in Victoria to keep track of property prices on RE.com?

How about the machete bins? Do I need to live in Victoria to know that 13 million was spent on 45 bins to have these deposited?

How about the CFMEU? Do I have to live in Victoria to know that the administrator alleges that 15 to 30 billion was rorted from the government via major projects?

It's pretty simple in VIC. The government thinks they should be sharing the spoils of hard work with those that haven't worked hard.

          • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Shedding you one singular tear

            • @DergBrain: No need mate - I would never invest in Vic property anyway and am far away from anyone with a machete.

        • 13 landlords negged and 37 oppressed updooted as of this time

        • …..who rent to you, and have to recoup their costs.

      • It’s staggering to watch the Victorian government take its own voters for a ride, dragging the state further into decline—yet somehow, they’re rewarded at the ballot box again and again. At some point, you have to question not just the leadership, but the cycle that keeps enabling it.

        • yet somehow, they’re rewarded at the ballot box again and again

What’s the alternative? Victorian Liberals can’t manage themselves, I wouldn’t trust them to look after my lunch box.

          • @Randolph Duke: As my pop use to tell me, "All governments are bad, you just have to pick the best of the bad". With taxes skyrocketing, crime and violence out of control, public spending and infrastructure budget blowouts, highest unemployment rate, i know who i WOULDNT be voting for.

            • @BatmanAU: That's called manufacturing consent, I recommend you read up on it.

            • @BatmanAU:

i know who i WOULDNT be voting for.

I’m not sure you understood what your Pop said. I agree Labor are on the nose. I still wouldn’t vote for the Libs. Who are you thinking of voting for?

Lack of credible opposition is hurting Victoria.

            • @BatmanAU: I wouldn't be voting for the Liberals when they are suing each other and keep changing leaders. They're too focused on themselves to formulate policy or care about the public.

            • @BatmanAU: "crime and violence out of control"
              Lol

              Actual information from the experts:

Block-quote "However, when measuring crime on a per capita basis, Melbourne’s crime rate is actually lower today (18,097 per 100,000) compared to 2016 (18,334 per 100,000)."

Block-quote "There is a similar picture unfolding in Melbourne, with drug use and possession down 7.5% and drug dealing and trafficking down 20.6% since last year."

Block-quote"Many of the increases in recorded crime are in line with national trends, indicating no real cause for local alarm. Meanwhile, significant recorded crimes, such as homicides and drug related offences, show drastic drops."

Is Melbourne really the 'crime capital of Australia'

          • @Randolph Duke: at this point the local RSL committee is worth a shot, literally anyone that is not Bendigo Barbie is worth a shot

        • Cute little em dash ;)

          • @Zuelly: No point in having these discussions on OzB, too many people on here screaming “please Sir, may I have some more free money” and then negging peeps who try explain how economics work. Lowest common denominator on here unfortunately

            • @BatmanAU: Nawww buddy… looking for a community to cry with… You should try reddit, maybe you’ll find some sympathy there :)

              Good luck :)

              • @Zuelly: Lol wut, Reddit is the exact same crowd as ozbargain… Only selfishly vote for whoever give them more "free" shit.

              • @Zuelly: Nah not me champ, just my usual Sunday post, filled with fact and commonsense that uneducated neggers rush to their keyboards to hate on, fills me with warmth knowing they got some exercise today.

                • @BatmanAU: Errmm.. you actually left a comment not a post

      • Yes that evil state VIC trying to bankrupt itself. Absolutely awful giving money back to people.

QLD would never do a massive public stunt that involves giving free money to people for things like transport for example. That's just throwing away money! Only VIC is evil.

I wish we had the soaring house prices that other states have as well as all their other shitty ideas in VIC. Shame the government is incompetent and seems to be dealing well with the housing crisis. 😭

          • @bigpoppa: You must live in an uncomplicated world to have such a simple take

            • @gakko: you must be a product of right wing (profanity) world that took the funding from public school skuul to give to private schools to even understand what the context of the chain of comments in which my one sits

            • @gakko: IMO i think its people like you that have a simple take and dont think the 1 percent pay off officials to get everything they want. just look at the money the gas lobbyists are spending on ad campaigns and some government officials literally quoting from them directly. Kinda mind blowing how many people who leave government that go into roles working for the corporations they used to rights laws for. But you do you, sometimes being ignorant is easier, ill give you that.

              • @Hoopzzy: And yet we have Medicare, NDIS, solar rebates. Labor undid some of the income tax changes that libs put in motion which would've taxed the rich far less.

You guys just prove my point by pretending that it's all one dimensional. And by logical extension that we are powerless and irrelevant. You think that because I say government is capable of good, that id not acknowledge the bad? Typical Maga level projection.

                I

                • @gakko: Exactly, government has literally been the only institution in history that has been able to keep the rich elite in check, not always successfully, but it's has been the only thing but somehow people get "Government = Bad", of course that is intentional when you look at who is spreading these ideals and the owner of those platforms.

Maybe we should ask Ms. Rinehart and DJT down the streets if they could help us instead.

                • @gakko: By your own logic you just assumed i said all government is bad which i did not. i just pointed out some of the bad. And to call someone from australia a Maga is actually funny, what has that got to do with anything being said? did we hurt your little feelings and instead of having a big boy conversation you try and make the other person immediately the bad guy? maybe grow up and you can come back to the big boy table once you learn to point at facts to prove your point because no doubt everyone that disagrees with you now is a naz* or a rac*st too.

              • @Hoopzzy: obviously by 'the 1%' you mean the CFMEU and the other powerful unions

                • @2ndeffort: Sure they can be included in the one of many groups stuffing over the rest of us? You cannot make a country this stuffed without many peoples hands in the old cookie jar.

        • Giving free money?, is it really free money after they tax the shit out of you?

You cant really deal with a housing crisis if no one wants to live there.

        • Oh they’ve definitely dealt with the housing demand… by making Melbourne undesirable to live in. This isn’t the W you think it is

      • Just tax more from business owners a landlords and give out more handouts, no one will complain about that. Long as there are more workers and renters than business owners and landlord, we will still have the vote of the majority.

        • You don't seem to realise that all that expenditure gets passed straight back to you. For some reason people love to tax "other people". Taxes and free stuff are just false incentives and don't actually fix any of the problems in society.

      • Ok, I am "watching out".

So what exactly should I be doing?

        Please provide practical advice.

      • People whose family tree isn't a straight stick understands the government is for the people not for the epstein class. only someone whose wife is their mum and sister would willingly vote for a right wing (profanity). Only these inbred muppets would pay a 'cheap' $4 billion for overseas trains, then blow another $2 billion fixing them, when they could have just supported local industry for $5 billion from the start. Great economic mangers everyone…

    • how much is rego is VIC?

      • About $900 for cars

      • $900

      • Just paid mine .. $930. It varies by region though which is absolutely moronic.

        • Not if you live in the region where it's cheaper ;)

        • It includes third party bodily injury insurance which in other states you need to purchase separately

        • So it’s $930 plus CTP? If not that is expensive

I just paid my NSW rego, about $380 plus $450 CTP

          • @Grok: It's $930 inclusive. Basically the same as NSW.
