Looking for Dashcam Recommendation - Budget $800

Hi, I tried to find the right forum to post this under, so I hope I found the right one. I was looking for dashcam recommendations but didn't find any recent posts. All were at least a year or more old.

I just bought my first brand new car and would like to install a reliable 2CH dashcam. My budget is under $800.

Just a few things I'm looking for:

  • Parking mode.
  • Clear recording of number plates, including at night.
  • GPS.
  • A super capacitor and the ability to buy a hardwire kit, if one is not included.

Oh, and I'm not very technology savvy anymore. An easy to use interface and easy way of transferring videos from the cam to a phone/laptop, would be good too.

What brand(s) would you recommend and are there any brands I should avoid?

Thanks in advance :o)

a229 plus 2ch is a good pick up

Ditto. Flawless so far in 2 cars. Get a good micro SD card though as the card gets quite a workout; and reformat every 2 months or so. 128gb minimum. Sandisk Max Endurance pricey but very reliable.

Don't get Samsung Pro Endurance. I had a recording get corrupted because of the card. I went to Officeworks and got the SanDisk Max Endurance cards. Only buy from a reputable bricks and mortar retailer. There's too many fakes online, even from Amazon.

Thinkware X1000, goes on sale for around $500. Comes with hardwire kit and gps antenna. Happy with first unit I got then bought a second for my other car. Records to an SD card though, so need computer to get it. No wifi on this device.

Don’t pay X1000 nowadays, it’s a very old dashcam and still using STARVIS1 sensor - and arguably expensive for what it is.

For $800 go with Blackvue Elite 8. Otherwise, <$500 is the budget, look at Viofo, DDAI or 70mai.

      • I was looking at a viofo a329s, but viofo has an issue with SD cards and suddenly not recording?

    Budget $800

    I wouldn't consider an $800 one 'budget'.

    • Under 800. If I can find a good one for 200 bucks, that's fine too. But 800 is my maximum budget.

      • Yeah OK…

  • Blackvue

Second this. I’ve had a black 750x for the last 4 years. It’s excellent

I like this guy for reviews I like this guy for reviews https://www.youtube.com/@VortexRadar/videos

don't think the current batch of blackvues are that good

        mine is an old one

        • yeah but the current batch are better than the older ones ;)

one thing I like about blackvue is it has no screen.

blackvue look much better than viofo and others with a screen. I would definitely consider an upcoming blackvue model if it's good.

  • Thanks everyone. I'll look into the Blackvue, DriveVision, DDAI and 70mai.

    • Let us know how you go…

      • There's more than one of you?

        • Yes, in a parallel universe there are another 3 of me…

  • Looking for same for my son however don't want to spend 800$. Maybe around 350$

Trade your new car for a car that comes with an in-built dash cam (eg Merc, Mini, BMW or Tesla). Third-party dash cams are never perfect. What if someone hit you from the side? Or keyed in?

    • I don’t trust car cameras. I wear a body cam in the car at all times and have a DJI drone in follow mode 24/7.

I avoid this by staying home with the car parked safely in the garage.

Or you could enjoy the free public transport for another month.

        • I use it wherever possible.
