        With how tiny the typical Japanese room is and how restricting luggage can be when travelling between cities. I think even 30kg is overkill. We just did a smallish backpack each.

    Are these decent prices for Brisbane to Tokyo? Jetstar birthday sale is coming soon, I thought they do almost half this price. Is the difference really worth it?

        The deals conveniently (inconveniently?) does not include any dates in peak Japan ski season (late December to early March). Qantas knows what they are doing.

      I was recently on QF61 BNE-NRT and we couldn't believe how empty the flight was. It was probably less than 20% pax. You could do temu first class and sleep in the aisles. Not sure if was cancellations due to the earthquakes etc. but it was ghost town.

      Pretty good for Qantas International nowadays. Whenever I've looked it's been about $1600/pp return, so ~$1150/pp return is solid imo.

      A couple of my close friends have had some really awful Jetstar international cancellations in the last couple of years which has scared me (albeit not Japan routes), adding on the fact you don't get bags or meals included on Jetstar so I'm spending more than the advertised sale price for those, as well as the cheapest of the cheap Jetstar fares flying back home to Brisbane often being non-direct/requiring transit in Sydney or Cairns so you're spending more again if you want to avoid an extra +4-8hrs of travel. I personally would rather pay this decent direct Qantas fare.

      Definitely looks like it's gone up. These used to be occasionally under $900 and routinely in the low $900s depending on the time of year. $1.1k+ in the depths of summer is expensive

        Unsure why you are judging someone you never met, with no known details around their circumstances or how they have come to this decision.

        Not that I should NEED to explain this to you, but I will.

        We have talked to our kids teachers and they said it would be perfectly fine for them to take off the last 2 weeks of school of the year. In their words, they will not be planning to do any curriculum work because that time is reserved for awards and end of year activities.

        If that does change, they are happy to provide us with homework so they can do it either during the trip or the Christmas break.

        Honestly, I have no idea why you would spend your valuable time on this earth making a snarky comment to someone you don't know, about a situation that doesn't involve you, with no detailed information.

        I hope next time you think about judging someones decisions, you at least TRY and understand why they are doing it and their justifications for it.

      I wouldn't say the Japanese economy is heavily driven by foreign tourist spending. I looked it up, it accounts for 1.3-1.5% of GDP.
      Less than Australias 1.56%.

      But, yes it's so much cheaper than it used to be. I've been visting Japan for 20 years now and it's really starting to feel cheap. Many products are a similar price I was paying 20 years ago.

      Unfortunately now, 95% of tourists go to the same 5 places and they are overcrowded and unpleasant.

      I just came back from a 3 week trip and many places I went to I didn't see any international tourists.

        You should see the Australia subs in reddit. Apparently working families are all living in tents by the river because a couple on $200k can't afford rent. Yet I look at multiple apartments in my building that are advertised week on week for very affordable rates like $650.. it's a very weird/fake narrative.

Go out into the real world and every cafe, restaurant is packed selling $35 parmas. Every shopping center is packed with people going about their day to day lives.

      Yeah. If you don't, figure out where your money is going, or how you can be earning more (extra hours, second job, promotion, etc). Break down what you actually spend per month, and put it into categories like basic groceries, eating out, entertainment subscriptions, and see what you really spent, not just what you think you spent. If you ordered ubereats even once, you're spending like a rich person. If you have more than one 'netflix' type thing, you're spending like a rich person. You are paying a servant to do something for you, if you have poor people driving your food around for you. That's rich. Stop it.

      I earn a pretty average wage, and I decided to buy a 2bed apartment near the MCG. $30k deposit with a 5% scheme. Literally anyone with an adult job can do the same thing. I rent out 1 room, I am out of pocket basically the same as I would be renting. Build your future, complaining doesn't do anything, and just to be blunt, nobody cares, so if you don't like it, only you can change it.

      I have no kids, public transport is now free, I don't really have to think about money. Just went to China for 2 weeks and Thailand for 1. I'd go for 3 months if I had the leave. Being on holidays is actually cheaper than living at home, in some cases. Hotels aren't always cheap, but when food is $3, and transport is $1-2, most of SE Asia is basically free once you get there. Just you aren't working while you're there.

      You can control your own situation, whether it's cutting spending or earning more.

    These are slightly more costly than Ive ever spent to go during ski season. But I'd still happily pay what is on this post to fly direct. Outside ski season, much better deals to be had generally. At 500-600 id just stopover in Cairns flying Jetstar Japan.

        Sale airfares are basically always for non-peak travel dates. Your dates are literally the peak travel dates.

            @Homr: For that time period, probably. There are never sales during a time when they know they are going to sell every ticket at maximum price. It's pretty much 2-3x the price to anywhere during that time.

      I was just there for a month and didn't see any of that, other than the small foreigner markup a couple of times in some restaurants (which often got waived if we said hello and thank you in Japanese).

    I flew Qantas to HK last year and the interior was looking old and tired, with a tiny TV screen to boot - that interior must have been at least 10 years old. It made for a fairly average experience on a 9 hour flight. Of course I wouldn't expect every plane to be like that but I doubt I'll fly international with Qantas in the foreseeable future after that experience.

      Yes that's because they are using 2 decades old A330 to fly Asian routes including HK and JP.
      You're very lucky because these A330 flights often delay due to mechanic failure.

      Agreed - flew to HK last month and found the flight far more uncomfortable than the usual Asian airlines I fly with which is unexpected given Qantas markets itself as premium with prices reflecting it. Interior was very very aged and food was actually abysmal which says a lot as I generally don't mind plane food and will always eat it.

      I feel like I haven't had a quality Qantas international flight in over a decade. Then after covid whatever quality they had left was gone. If it wasn't for convenient flight times, routes and a lot of QFF points, I probably wouldn't fly Qantas.

            @punkel: the AUD/YEN has gone up 13% over 6 months, I doubt their local prices have matched that.

        I have never been, but I remember specials normally being around $700-800. I have no idea which airline or if it was direct though.

    Interesting how JP flights are more expensive than USA flights.
    Could it be a lack of demand from travellers to the USA?

    Thanks for sharing. At the time now with fuel crisis, this is a very attractive price.

    However, I have to be honest, Qantas is no near close to JAL in terms of service, food, on-time accuracy and in-flight entertainment, they are not at the same level.

    I have been flying from Melbourne to Tokyo 4 times in 2024 and 2025. 2 times with Qantas, 2 times with JAL, they are really not the same.

    I wish one day Qantas can remove their slogan “Spirit of Australia”, I don’t think they deserve it at all.

    Found some pretty good fares but their A300 airbus’ are near end of life and tired - not up to the level of comfort and service of key competitors on the Asia routes. Tempting but might be worth holding out for a more comfortable journey.

      Flying BNE - LAX on their A330 was a nightmare. 737s are comfier and roomier.

    Are the sites that this links you to (like budgetair.com.au) legitimate? I usually book through the carriers but I haven't used links through here before. Looking for cheap flights to get xmas/new years in japan (not quite the dates on here but will try jig something up). Will see how we go.

    Best way to save on multi-city journeys?
    If going to Japan I'd like to start in Osaka and finish in Tokyo (or vice versa) rather than spending the whole time in Tokyo.
