This is the newer one that is more restrictive than the previous models.

    • +4

Yep, Amazon basically rebranded/re-released the Fire TV Stick 4K as the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus and released this cheaper 'Select' model.

    • Does have basic apps like Kayo, Apple TV etc?

      • Yes

        • Kayo is not available on it.

          • @Cyphar: Are you sure? Kayo doesn't need to be sideloaded on Fire Stick.

          • @Cyphar: It's available, I use it

          • +2

@Cyphar: My Kayo stopped working on my FireStick 4K recently, or more accurately, it kept on showing 'you must update this app to keep using it' (and that was a Kayo message). I was briefly able to uninstall/reinstall for testing, but then a few days later the app was no longer showing in the app store on the FireStick.
You could probably sideload it (https://www.reddit.com/r/firestick/comments/1t1n8wq/kayo_app…).

Its a shame as I used mine for travelling (just plugged it in and kids/wife/me had all our netflix/YT/kayo all working) but I will replace with an AppleTV instead - not quite as portable but better quality and less buffering issues (albeit the 4K was better than previous firesticks).

            • +3

@camr00: Can't sideload on these models unfortunately. So I wasted my money on it as I bought it for a purpose it's not fit for. I'll be getting an Apple TV like you.

              • +2

@Cyphar: Sorry, didnt mean to specifically tag you, more just a response to your message.
But yeh, these were once good devices but the benefits are no longer there for many uses.
All the best with the ATV.

              • +2

@Cyphar: Return it for a refund and state that it does not have the app you need. That should help send the message to Amazon that these locked-down Fire TV devices are not wanted.

                • +2

@thangcuoi: Do you think the chick with blue hair at jb hifi is going to email bezos about the reason for the return or something? It is just going to go the big bin.

    • I wonder if you can crack it

      • Select models can not be modded

        • +6

Wow. Boomer tier slop product now lol

    • +13

Just looked it up and Kodi is not available, same as before but VLC is not available either.

      So that’s pretty crap.

      • +5

plex also streams through amazon servers, max out at 720p 2mb.. Like who thought this was a good idea.

    • +2

      Thanks. I'll ignore this deal.

Bought a few fire sticks before and blocked the update process in pihole

    • Yep, forget about any sideloading.

      • Looks like I will keep my old Fire TV Stick Lite.
Works a treat on my 65" Samsung TV screen

  • +29

Good for Beryl and Graham to watch netflix, Kayo etc etc.

Not good for us ozb lunatics who use Tivimate, Stremio, 3rd party apps etc.

Amazon slowly cutting these apps off

My dad's new firestick won't allow me to install the downloader app anymore… so word of caution!

    • +2

Yeah at home I've moved on from firesticks to Google TV Streamers. This will be perfect for my mum though.

      • +11

Possibly. But there will be some that will have an issue. Cool?

        • -8

Sensitive topic.. sheesh. Lucky I have 3 older Firesticks. Perhaps sell them at a mark up to OzBargain folk?

      • +8

You are missing out if you haven't tried TiviMate. Even just loading it up with the Aussie TV channel pack and watching FTA is so much better than using all the other apps.

        • Don't think tivimate can even be installed on this model

        • Can you please provide link for the playlist to add in TiviMate?

      • -2

        Proof of statistics?

    • -1

      What Tivimate do?

    • Thanks for that, saved me $45! recently found Stremio but my frustration is not being able to cast it to my TV's. opening in external (VLC) never shows a picture, just the sound so that has been useless to try cast from.

Was about to jump on this but it seems it wont work either

    • Downloader got taken off the app. Store for a few days unless it's this model you can still download it

  • so is it worth looking for an older firestick in order to be able to sideload other apps? or would older sticks be forced to updated eventually?

    • +2

any of the older sticks are fine. They are not upgrading older sticks to the new OS, they release new models with the new OS

    • +1

      It is

Also block updates with pihole network wide

    • +7

      just get google tv

    • Google TV streamer or Xiaomi TV stick 4K are your best bets(wish we got Walmarts ONN 4k Plus). You could get a Firestick 4k max and try this method and see if it still works. But the way amazon is locking these down hard it quiet crazy.

On an unrelated but similar issue - I had a defective controller on my Firestick 4k max and they sent a whole new unit out. They didn't want the old unit back at all. So I thought I scored with having two Firestick 4k max's - but amazon just locked the original Firestick 4k max I had. I cannot use it at all.

  • +5

The 4K Select and HD (2026) are the models that do not allow sideloading (new Vega OS)

Other models allow for sideloading but that can change any day

  • gah, im in need of another 4k max, was hoping this code would work on that (it doesnt). Prime day is in june this year, looks like ill be waiting until then.

    • +2

This is what I need as well. Problem is whether Amazon would still be selling older sticks by then since they announced Vega would be new OS.

      • +1

Its a bit over a month away, even if they did introduce the new model there should be some cross-over with the old model still for sale to clear stock. Hopefully something comes up before then but the last amazon sale was for $69, thats hard to beat.

  • +6

    No sideloading apps, no deal!

PS> the older Firesticks that run on Android will still be supported until 2031. Even though Amazon is starting to lock down some apps, there are usually workarounds that can easily be found by Googling.

  • Does it have a volume limit option in settings? My young son only knows one setting on the tv. MAXIMUM VOLUME. 🫣

    • +2

Have you tried locking the remote in a cupboard?

    • +4

Have you tried locking the son in a cupboard?

      • +3

But then he’s in there with the remote?

      • That's only for nephews with lightening scars

  • +8

    google tV MUCH BETTER

    • +1

yeah, but sadly no google TV at this price point :(

      • +1

Google tv streamer has been really close to this price though.
I got mine in December for $48 at JB Hifi with price match and $10 birthday voucher. Still unopened, bought it as backup for my firesticks.

        • yeah I recon I got it for under $50, even if you had to pay $10 more and have stremio on it you make your $$ back

  • Do these devices still spam the network with packets? I was watching my network with an older Fire Stick 4k and it was getting hammered with all kinds of requests from the Fire Sticks IP. I couldn't even block them all with my AdGuard so I ended up just replacing it with a Chromecast and my network got way quieter.

    • you could say that. Ive blocked some requests, i havn't gone to the hassle of blocking everything yet and seeing what i can get away with - https://ibb.co/tT67kT1x

    • Im not sure about that, but pretty sure you can block all of the updates from amazon on the regular ones. These are locked down and probably no chance.

  • +1

I have 2 unopened (Android one) older versions which i bought 7-8 months ago before they released the new one.
While doing some research, I noticed there aren’t many up to dare resources on fully customizing or unlocking the device (changing menus, installing custom interfaces, etc.). I remember there used to be some great projects where you could completely transform the UI, install apps like Stremio and similar setups, and even block the device from receiving updates permanently.
Would really appreciate any advice or direction.

    • +3

TroyPoint is your go-to. I was able to block any updates on my Firestick 4k Max (2nd gen). I have projectivy launcher on it too, so it looks and feels nice and uncluttered. With the downloader app I am able to have everything on there including stremio and other similar apps. As always FMHY is your friend.

  • So does this have Kayo on it without doing some little hack etc just want to be able to install it like normal

I’m new to all this as I use AppleTV but was thinking about getting one of these for when I go on holidays and wanna plug it into a TV to watch the NRL via Kayo

    • +1

No you cannot install Kayo on this. It is incompatible with the new sticks:

      https://i.imgur.com/HRYxnOv.png

      • Hey can I be a pest and ask you to confirm stremio is definitely banned on the new sticks?

Everyone here saying you can't anymore, google is sayings its still possible.

Reddit thinks "Firesend" works as a sideloader now too?

        • +1

          Only the select ones

      • Ok thanks
Can you tell me or someone tell me why??

It’s not like it’s a small little homemade app

  • A word of warning on Kayo and the FireStick. I am not 100% sure if this applies to this new model. Though since Kayo updates forced 4k on firestick, the device is unusable on Kayo, reported by mself and a few others. The framerate constantly drops into the teens. I've resorted to using my PS5 for Kayo again as a result.

  • +1

this model is shit stay away from if you are using 'certain' IPTV apps just a warning

    • +1

just say it - stremio stremio stremio stremio stremio stremio stremio stremio stremio stremio

  • Nobody buy, they have to drop the price?

  • Just curious - what makes someone choose this over a Google TV or Apple TV? Aside from price.

    • I think deeper Alexa and smart‑home integration and better 4K/Dolby Atmos support.

I'm willing to try Onn 4K Pro by Walmart's private‑label brand. If anyone used this one . Troypoint is highly recommended this .

    • +1

      this particular model - nothing.
However the 4k Max does audio passthrough which the google streamer and apple tv do not. If you want lossless TrueHD/Atmos then the 4k Max is the best bang for buck.

    • Nothing . Doesn’t even play well with a hub because it’s micro usb! Chromecast way better with USB C

  • Hey, this can be used to cast youtube etc?
    Cast with local cast etc?

    • +1

Yes you install the YouTube app then you can cast to it from your phone.

      • More for watching videos with something like local cast etc

  • This Amazon product has become increasingly annoying blocking side loaded apps, not sure SmartTube will work on this, it still works on my older fire stick tv max 4K .

    • +4

      No sideloading = no SmartTube

      • +4

= No point. Plenty of better options.

  • Which of these streaming things allows you to use stremio? Is there a preferred device. Stremio and YouTube are the main apps that are used and prioritise good connectivity over 4k (4k would be nice but always buffers too much)

    • +1

Google tv streamer 4k, NVIDIA shield pro, firestick 4k max.

    • +1

I grabbed the newer Google TV Streamer 4K and its worked well with all Stremio content and custom sideload apps such as YouTube without ads etc.

    • Apple TV does as well, but I think its still better on the shield

  • This is the one that is not android, so you will not be able to install any external apps. Maybe someone will come up with an exploit, but still cant install the regular apks.

  • +3

Beware this is the worst streaming device you can get. Runs on Vega os instead of android tv.
You are limited to apps on Amazon store. Simply useless device unless you are happy with official apps and zero side loading and flexibility.

    • And then remember they might decide to just pull the product if it doesnt do well, and their app store would be gone for it too. They are doing it with older kindle devices.

      • they might decide to just pull the product if it doesnt do well,

Yeah, don't buy, force them to pull the product.

  • +2

I bought this as I wanted to covert a very old dumb tv missing a remote to something more usable. I am happy as it was easy to set up and I am able to use the internet browser for streaming.

  • Do people still buy these?

  • Apart from not being avle to sideload it is wifi 5 only.

Wifi 6 is a big step up. Reccomend the pre switch 4k Max.

  • Pass on the select
