[iOS, Android] Free Lifetime Licence: Halfy - Half Price Groceries and Recipes @ Apple App Store & Google Play

HALFY-OZ-4-LIFE

G'day OzBargain,

Quick disclosure first: I'm the developer of Halfy. To get some honest feedback from this crowd, I'm giving OzBargainers free lifetime Halfy Plus access. Redemption details below.

Yes this is another Half Price Grocery app. I know I'm not the first to do this, there are a few apps like this already. Halfy isn't a reinvention though. It's the version I wanted that none of them quite were.

Some key differentiating features.

  • Recipes generated from this week's discounted products. Meal plans regenerate from the live half-price catalogue, so dinner ideas only ever use stuff that's cheap today. Feed your family for under $10 / $20 / $30 price ranges. Harder but still kinda possible these days!
  • Swipe-to-save on the home screen. A Tinder-style card stack of today's deals: swipe right to save (small confetti when you do), left to skip, tap to open the product. Fastest 30-second triage of the day's specials I've come across. No other grocery app I've tried works this way, and it's genuinely the bit I open the app for most.
  • Action-based categories. Cuts categories by what you're actually shopping for ("Loo", "Brushing Teeth", "Laundry", "Frozen Veg") instead of dumping 600 items under "Cleaning".
  • Trending by saves, not by margin. What's actually popular this week, ranked by real users hitting save.
  • Real price history. Spot the "was/was" trick where today's "30% off" matches last month's regular price.
  • Browse, not list-build. Most existing apps want you to type a shopping list and compare prices. That's useful, but not how I shop. I browse the catalogue and pick what's cheap. Halfy is built around browsing.
  • Solo dev, no data sold, no paid placement skewing the top results.

I honestly think you guys will enjoy it. Happy to take on feedback to build out features you want!

  • How much is it normally?

    • +10

For context. Plus costs $50/year. The bulk of the app is free with light ads. (Not the biggest fan of inline ads) The subs cover server costs and keeps me building. The lifetime codes mean a chunk of you get the full thing forever, free.

      • Whats the difference between the Plus and the Halfy Plus thats part of this lifetime licence? Or are they the same thing?

  • Hello privacy…

    • +1

      What's the privacy issue?

      • +18

He's in fact saying hello to privacy

        • +12

          @privacy-enthusiast @privacyRMIT @PrivacyToggle

I'm not sure which one he wanted so I called all 3 of them.

        • +1

          My old friend…

    • +15

Hey, we do use some AI to generate recipes within a certain criteria and based on a list of all specials gathered. These recipes are then reviewed by us before being placed in the app.
AI isn't used on user data.

        • +16

Why would he need to disclose that?

  • This is a great idea. I'll give it a try.

As feedback, and not sure if it's possible, but would it be good to integrate something like Yuka ratings? Some of the meals might have reduced nutritional value and a lot of additives.

Also there was a screen on your app that said about Apple asking about ads, but this was on Google Play store.

Good luck with it and happy to provide more feedback as I use it, or don't use it and explain why. 🙂

    • Thanks for giving it a go and good suggestions.
I'll add this to the list of things to look into!
And yes sorry, there is a flag in the app not behaving. Didn't realise until this morning. Thanks for letting me know.

  • I think your server might be being ozbargained, cause i'm getting a "network unreachable" onboarding error when signing up

    • Ok signup finally worked… This app looks really great! good work! funny enough I was just wishing for something like this this morning.

  • +15

Thanks. Is there a way to search for an item that's not currently on sale to create an alert? I can only seen to search on sale items.

    • Hey not currently.
The app only shows products that have being tracked as being on sale.
If you do favourite a product and it goes off sale and then back on sale. Then Halfy will send a notification that it has dropped.
We may start tracking all products in the future, but currently Halfy don't support this.

    • +4

      You might like Bargeroo

      • +2

seems like a more useful app for weekly grocery shopping

    • +4

I second this feature, would be nice to add items on there and then if they go on sale to give you an alert.

  • +6

Just wondering, do you lump varities of the same product together? Nothing more frustrating than scrolling through the half price specials and having to thumb past 15 different flavours of Gatorade. Makes the lists endlessly long to scroll.

Would far prefer a 'Gatorade varieties' option that I can then open and further scroll if I desire.

    • +2

Just messed around in it for a bit. Doesn't seem this is the case, so can I recommend as an option to lump varieties of the same product together?
Also, I swiped the wrong direction a couple of times when I first started. Assuming it's just training the algorithm of what I like, but I couldn't find any way to un-swipe these ones. Is that an option?

I largely only shop at Coles, but live outside of a major city so some of their items are not available. Is it possible to filter out/exclude some of the sale items that seem to be the basis of a lot of the recipes? Might already be an option but I couldn't see it readily.

      Cheers!

      • +3

Hey thanks for checking it out.
We don't group them currently, maybe we should?

With the swiping the data is saved locally, you can reset it in your profile settings. Go to Daily Pick History and reset it.

Not currently, I can look into this though for a future update to filter out recipes and or products. Cheers for the suggestion.

        • +3

No worries, happy to provide feedback. I really like the idea and wish you success!

Of anything I've asked, I definitely think grouping would be the most helpful. Perhaps a tile with the first item, and then a "*+7 more options" flag in the corner, so it's clear that it's covering the whole product type and not just the single one.

          Cheers!

  • +34

Feedback: Should not ask me to review the app before I have used it for the first time.

    • +2

      Noted.. Cheers, will remove.

  • Hey thanks mate.

Used the code. Needed to log out to enable plus. But going back into app took me through setup again… accidentally selected two people in family this time, and now I cannot find out a way to change it to 4. Plus is active now though since logging back in and going through setup.

    • +2

      Noted.. Cheers.
To update it you can head to the Recipes tab and change your family size there.
I see it can be confusing, I might add an option in profile too.

    • Same - logged out to see if Plus had been activated and went through set up again. Not sure which options saved 😅

Perhaps add "Sign In" option on your first screen on app open (please) 😊 and maybe refresh once promo code has been accepted to show Plus activation?

Edit: thank you for the promo code code!

    • Force close the app and reopen worked for me. No need to log out.

  • +3

Just a question will other shopping stores also be added eg: Aldi, IGA Costco. Good app otherwise

    • +2

Yes for sure. I don't have a timeframe currently, maybe in a month or two.
I think getting data from Aldi/IGA will be harder due to regional pricing. But definitely will look into it.

  • -3

In before the unemployed coders mention vibe coding.

    • +6

funnily enough the original version of the app existed before vibe coding was a thing :)

  • +3

Ok, this app is great. I have been using another app (Half Price) for a few years now, but noticed it's progressively been getting worse, not listing things that are 50% etc. Halfy is nailing it and covering so much that it misses. I've already uninstalled the other app; it's junk compared to this.

Thank you for bringing this to OzBargain!

    • +3

      Cheers thank you!
I'll keep improving it for you guys!

  • +9

Looks like a nice app. :-) Well done.

For me these half price deals are not deals … they are just double the price every other week. They really got us with their marketing. I stick to Aldi.

Maybe add a feature to cheaper alternative products than these "deals" - even when they are regular priced.

    • Implementing Aldi to the app would resolve some of that I'd imagine.

    • +4

Yeah I do noticed that, a lot of products regularly bounce between 'half' price and full price. We do have a feature coming up which will let you know if that is a genuine deal or bogus.
The alternative products feature is interesting. I will look into it.

  • +7

Great looking app. love it already,

    Some suggestion
    - Adding your Dietary for your family would help. For Example if you set to Vegan, it would give you vegan deals or meals.
    - Adding other brands into the portfolio, like Aldi, etc

    • +2

Great suggestions. Will add them to the list! Cheers.

    • +3

      +1 for vegetarian/vegan dietary option

      • Ditto

  • Hey, quick question.
I'm using the Android app, and when I try to redeem a code for a Plus subscription, I get an error and the code doesn't seem to work.

Also, just an observation (can't help being a BA in the real world, can you look?) on one of the setup screens in the Android app, specifically the "Ads Worth Your Time" screen, the text says "Tap continue and Apple will ask if you'd like to allow ads." I'd suggest changing it to Google or Android for Android apps.

    • Ignore the 1st part. Found the Redeem Code option. Thanks

  • Support inde developer
Just my first impression comment, the narrow font style is a bit hard to read

    • Cheers!
Which parts of the app in particular do you think has this problem?
      Are the fonts too small?

  • Thanks; signed up - family of 6. $500/week being the top end are rookie numbers (incl. formula, diapers/cleaning supplies, etc.).
Realistically I think we're fairly conservative; but preparing school lunches and home meals kills us. $2000/month is pretty standard; and I'm mostly buying yellow stickers. Will see how this goes real world. Love the integration of meal ideas; and definitely don't care its AI - I embrace the new overlords.
I find in many discussions like this; people don't believe they spend $500/week, until they run a budget and categorize all their bills for groceries. Some banks like Westpac have online categories which seem to work 80% of the time; often spending way more than you think (with top-up shops, regular bulk buys; etc.)!
Aldi tracker would be a plus!

    • I thought the same with Aldi (that's my main shop) but maybe it's harder because I don't think they do the same kind of sales as Colesworth. But if there's a way to implement it into the app I'd love it too.

    • Cheers.
Thats some good insight. I will update the weekly spend slider to accept a higher number.
A lot of people here have requested Aldi, so definitely will try and get those products in as well.

  • +1

Looks great, good job mate. Really appreciate the deal, great way to get momentum. best of luck

    • Cheers!

  • +9

Why is account mandatory on Android? It says sign in to move between devices but that's not a concern for me. Would rather just use without an account.

    • Yeah I'd love to have a no account option, or at least a non-Google one

  • Hey, not for nothing but you might have actually solved meal logistics for more than a couple people living hard right now…

    • +2

Good to hear. That's what I was hoping for. Seeing discounted items is good on its own, but pairing them with ideas for what to do with the products is what gives the whole thing real clarity.

  • +1

Does the app also alert if the sale is greater than 1/2 off? or show these deals as well?

    • Yes it does, if you save a product. Any price drops will provide you with a notification.
There are some products greater than 1/2. If you go to the search tab without typing a filter. the products there are listed from highest discount.

  • Looks good, thank you!

  • Thanks, OP code redeemed successfully although it does ask me if I want to upgrade to plus still is that correct?

    • Hey, yes try closing and restarting the app. You should get Plus active after that.

  • -2

Would be great to see Amazon added to the platform

  • Awesome app. Thank you, OP!

  • +6

    I know im weird,
but instant uninstall, because it forces to lof in with your google account 🙄

    • Huh? Not me i had a choice

    • +5

:( Sorry. I stuck with Auth providers to make dev simple to begin with. I'll look into bringing in Email/Pass for people without Google/Apple accounts.

    • +4

I had the same sadly. Did others find a way on android to create a email and password login?

      • Nah couldn't see or click on anything during the wizard to skip that step

  • When you change your prefer from coles and Woolworths to just coles or Woolworths, the trending items don’t refresh keeping the previous store preferences

    Great app though! Love it

    • +1

Oh yup, good catch that is a bug. I will update this.

  • Code worked fine, interested to see how it goes - keen to see how the feature of preferred items goes.

  • Great responsive app. I agree that it would be better if we could group the varieties onto a single screen and list all the available flavours there.. I dislike scrolling 30 Tuna Flavours :)

    • -1

Noted.. Another user also mentioned this.
Will look it. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers.

  • -1

I said no for meat but I'm still getting dog food

Probably too much work to add a dietary requirements selection

    • Oh thats odd!
Which part of the app is it showing the meat/dog food?

      • The tinder suggestions. I'm guessing pet food is a different category to meats

        • I'll look into that, shouldn't be happening. Cheers.

  • -3

911 clicks to apple store via this post (at time of this comment) plus more to google play. And only 69 upvotes? People are really getting slack. Click the + if you like the app.

  • +6

Great work for an indy dev 💪
Only thing I baulked at was that I need to use my google account to sign in. I would prefer to use standard email address/password to sign up.
Also, if trending section allowed you to filter by retailer.

    • +1

Apologies, we kept to Google/Apple Auth for logins to keep things simple. I see that some users do want email/password so will aim to implement that for next update.
A few other users have also suggested to add a filter for tending as well. Will look into it!
      Cheers for the feedback.

  • I couldn’t find the item I wants say Bulla ice cream , you dun have the one for bull creamy tub one. It won’t be good if you really cannot have the items the user needs to add to, but still a good idea for the app.
    Cheers

    • Hey thanks for trying the app.
Yes, currently it will only show products on special. So if Bulla isn't on special, then it won't display.
A few users here have asked for regular product tracking so people in your situation can get notified on a drop.
      Thanks for your suggestion.

  • I signed up with Google account as per your onboarding.

If I uninstall and reinstall later, will you remember my account as having the subscription?

    • +4

Yes for sure. The Plus entitlement is linked to your account.
A few users here do want email/pass auth so we will look into implementing this in the next update.

  • +2

Another tip for you: adjust the "favourite store" options by state. Just google what the biggest chains in each state are.

I chose my state (Vic), and then it offers Harris Farms, which has no presence in Victoria.

It also offers Chemist Warehouse, which are fine but Aldi, then Foodworks and IGA, are bigger here.

    • +1

      I see..
Cheers that is some good insight.
I add this to the list.
      Thanks!

    • +1

Plus one for this request. Especially IGA, as its only worth going there for specials.

  • Thanks Dev - not a bad app, from a quick play!

Quick feedback would be some more demographic filters - I don't need to be shown ladies underwear/socks, or kids-related items.
I'm not vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free, but potentially some dietary-prefs too?

    • +1

Thanks for the feedback. Do you mean to only show you certain categories? Or have the ability to exclude categories all together?
I think that makes sense. I will consider this.
      Cheers.

      • Moreso hide specific ones, or show more 'relevant' categories based on my profile.

  • Cool app, thanks for sharing!
Once you pick your items and now have a list of 20 or so, it would be good to filter between stores, eg: create a shopping list for each Coles/Woolies if we have access to both.

    • +1

Hi! Thanks for trying the app out!
That is a great idea. Will add it to the list for the next update!
      Cheers!

  • +2

Looks good so far and could be pretty useful. Appreciate you extending the offer to us ozb crowd.

    A couple things.

I was comparing to the Coles app and found a few items that were on sale in the app but don't show up at all in the Halfy app (Example being Twinings Peppermint Tea 160g 80 bag pack, Coles VIC)
I see other comments where people have requested general product tracking regardless of special so I guess that feature would resolve this one, but seems some stuff isn't showing despite being on special right now.

Dark mode. Must have in any app, no questions asked.

Lastly, as someone with an allergy finding recipes can be an absolute nightmare.
Your recipe feature is cool, but it would be great to be able to omit specific ingredients or allergens in order to find recipes. Since it's just using AI to pump out meals that may or may not be palatable shouldn't be too difficult to add filters etc. Coles for example lists ingredients for products which I already exploit to find stuff I can actually eat.
Just an idea, probably not helpful for the majority but yeah.

    Best of luck!
