Just tried Category Choice Pets & Vets to pay medibank insurance and can confirm it still works.

    • Mine doesnt have the option to manually pay? How did you pay?

      • Open the medibank app/website
        1. Manage payments
        2. Pay premium (make a one-off payment / an advance payment)
        3. Add/change current credit card
        4. Pay specific amounts

        • Reading your comments below you paid Medibank insurance. This doesn't work for the pet one.

          • @Oh Daddy: Sadly, I didn’t know the pet insurance and human insurance are on different systems 🥹🥹

            • @bird380: Yeah Medibank rounds pet insurance via Petsure

    • Did you pay for Medibank Private Health insurance or Pet insurance?

      • +2

        It would be Health insurance.
Medibank Health insurance (amongst other funds) transact under MCC 6300. Which is just insurance sales as a generic. The card doesn't know the difference between animal insurance or people insurance.

      • +3

I paid for my health insurance (human)

    • +1

      Can you explain how?

    • Thanks for the tip. I took a gamble and it worked on my health insurance too.

    • Thank you, worked for me too

    • shhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • +2

Thx so much, just bought 2000 AUD GC.

    • +9

      Shit, Amazon locked my account…

      • Thought that might happen, I only bought 1x $500 gc.
I have $470 Amazon credit sitting on my account so don’t want it blocked/banned

        • Same here just look for 3% off CCGC. Does not have a new CC requiring welcome offer spending yet.

        • Bought $300 and order is stuck in scheduled status

        • I actually happened… Amazon closed my account and I have escalated the issue with Amazon customer service.

      • Why? I just bought 3000 GC, it's fine

        • Idk, then they asked me to provide payment information and I submitted my credit card pictures (double sides) and my driver’s license. A text message said the account was closed this morning. I found “we couldn’t verify your payment information from the documents you provided” when I logged into my Amazon account.

          • @hiram6742: Did your account get reinstated?

            • @PvsNP: I call Amazon customer service yesterday and i found there’s another form to be filled when i logged into my account this morning. I submitted the documents again, waiting for the response now.

      • Uh oh you dodgy

    • +1

      which ones you buy?

      • Groceries GC

  • Can I use GC to pay for fuel at BP or pay for Bupa insurance?

    • +2

The Category Choice Fuel card will likely work at BP.

The Pets & Vets card would probably work for Bupa assuming they are under MCC 6300. I don't insure with Bupa so I don't know for sure though.

    • +2

Waiting to hear if anyone have positive feedback about bupa as well ?

      • +1

Cat Choice Pet all good with Bupa this morning. I buy them through Alinta Energy though at 4% off, and you can also custom choose your amount, with my Bupa account I can only pay for x amount of days, so if you buy a $100 gift card or similar it's no good as there will be some left over.

        • One off payment? How did you pay Bupa, on the website or through the app?

  • Any of theae work for ebay?

    • +2

      CC Department Store

      • @Meteor Anarcom Can the CC Department Store be used to purchase eBay gift cards from eBay so that the full amount can be switched to eBay balance?

        • +2

No, but it can be used to purchase eBay GC in store if the store has the corresponded MCC, so can Groceries. You can buy eBay GC using CC groceries at Coles/WWS, but there's a limit of 8 GCs per order on eBay

          • +3

            @Meteor Anarcom:

You can buy eBay GC using CC groceries at Coles/WWS

Coles: That should work, as long as the staff member allows this.

Woolworths: are you confirming that now works? When someone tried to use a ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift card a couple of years ago to purchase an eBay gift card in-store at Woolworths, it was automatically rejected by the checkout. ShopBack Supermarket Visa gift cards and Category Choice Groceries gift cards use the same bank identification numbers (BINs) in their card numbers, so unless Woolworths has updated their checkouts to allow the purchase of eBay gift cards using Category Choice gift cards within the last two years, my expectation is that it will still be rejected.

          • +2

@Meteor Anarcom: Ok, thanks for info. Just to clarify because I tried using CC Groceries gift card to buy eBay gift card at Woolies a few months ago and got an error at the terminal.
I then had a look at the Category Choice OzBargain Gift Card FAQ and noticed that Ebay is listed in the table of as one of the gift cards that can't be purchased using CC Groceries gift card. It can be used at Woolies to purchase most other gift cards though.

Does the Visa GC work for ATO payments?

    • Probably not.

    • +3

The probably not answer above is correct.

Blackhawk Network - the owner of the Activ Visa gift card scheme - specifically forbids transactions at the ATO under the Activ Visa gift card terms and conditions (clause 1).

In terms of actually trying to make a payment, in my experience:

      • My attempts to make a payment via MyGov or Government EasyPay (both online and over the phone) have always been declined (and I first tried this a couple of weeks after Activ Visa gift cards were launched).

      • Blackhawk Network appears to have blocked Sniip for a while now, so you cannot use that to pay an ATO bill using an Activ Visa gift card.

      • If you have an ATO payment slip, you cannot use an Activ Visa gift card as a payment method when paying in-person at an Australia Post outlet, because the only payment methods accepted there are cash, cheque and card payments routed through the eftpos network (i.e. SAV or CHQ). Activ Visa gift cards only support the Visa network.

    • It doesn't. It doesn't work at a lot of places actually. It is rather annoying.

    • lol

Can’t seem to get Category Choice Groceries gift cards from HCF any more so great to be able to get them here, in a reasonably sized denomination too ($500). Thanks OP.

    • I could still buy them from HCF and $1000 too vs $500 in this deal

    • They are phasing out upfront discounted GC purchases and instead giving cashback/points on GC purchases through their new app :(

  • Had promo credits but forgot to apply this discount code (did it use to auto apply in the past??) so re-purchased another one. Thanks OP!

  • Any cap?

  • Anyone know if you can pay fines with the Visa Card?

    • keen to know.

    • Just bailed myself out of jail with a few.

      • Judge must be @WookieMonster

  • Does Costco work for Fuel or does it come under 5542 — Automated Fuel Dispensers (pay-at-pump)

  • Wondering why it's getting popular, with only 3% offer?

    • +7

because it can spend in places with 0% discount?
eg. Category Choice Groceries can be used in Costco, Asian Groceries , so 3% off is better than nothing? My next best will be using HSBC Global Debit which gives 2% cashback for every tap transaction below $100

Besides, I can use AMEX to purchase GC from Amazon, where costco and most asian groceries doesnt accept AMEX

      • Can you please explain how do you pay using these cards?
Are these physical cards or digital?
If digital, can we add them to Apple Pay?

        • +5

Category Choice gift cards are digital prepaid Visa gift cards that work at specific merchant category codes. You can add them as a new payment card onto Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet.

      • A few days ago, I had an experience at Costco where I was told that split payments aren’t allowed and only one card can be used for the entire transaction at checkout. This was stated before they even knew what type of cards were being used.

We were planning to pay using two HSBC cards, and when I explained that we didn’t have sufficient funds on a single card, a supervisor reluctantly allowed us to use two cards.

So if you’re planning to use a Category Choice card, it should be fine as long as it covers the full transaction. Otherwise, you may run into some resistance at checkout.

Hopefully, this is just an isolated incident and not representative of the direction Costco is going.

        • I've been told that regular Gold Star members aren't able to split transactions (as in complete 2 transactions with separate receipts) but that is possible as a Business member.

I've never had any issues using multiple cards to compete a payment though. Hoping this isn't a new policy.

        • There's one occasion when I requested to split payment, was being asked what card I am using
I told the staff I am using prepaid visa and he allows it
(I am a holding a business card member, so not sure if it's difference to Gold Star member)

Also helpful to use these to stack with other in-store GC offers at Coles/WW/Aldi as mentioned in comment below

  • Does The Pets & Vets card work for GMHBA?

  • Does Category of Choice Groceries work in store at Coles? Apologies if this question has already been asked!

    • +4

I used one in-store at Coles yesterday.

I assume it still works, because Coles is supposed to be categorised as a supermarket.

If you are purchasing a gift card from Coles, you may have a staff member stop you if they see you are trying to use a Category Choice gift card as a payment method, but in my experience, nearly all staff do not care.

    • +2

yes but I personally wont be using Groceries GC for Coles when its easier to get discounted Coles GC
Check on this Wiki page and you can find there are many places selling discounted Coles GC
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/discounted_egift_cards

The only exception is probably to use Groceries GC in coles is to purchase giftcards, as Coles giftcards cannot be used to purchase other giftcards instore

      • +2

Looks like all the other ways to get a better discount for Coles GC either require a membership or don’t accept a credit card (like Macquarie). Or did I miss something?

  • Ohhhh great timing, works great for both my wife and my new credit card…

  • Do all insurers use MCC 6300?

  • I used it once for a $500 gift card and now code can’t be used again. Are you guys adding all cards in one transaction?

  • Can grocery card be used at Aldi?

    • Yup. Just the normal ALDI credit card surcharge.

      • Thanks. I just but coffee beans from there

  • great

  • I just bought grocery GC for testing, it doesn't work for Coles online order :s

    Is this I store only?

    • +2

Whether a Category Choice gift card works at merchant depends on two factors:

      1. The MCC assigned to the merchant.
      2. Whether the merchant accepts Category Choice gift cards.

Coles Online appears to be assigned MCC 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets), so that is not the issue.

However, Coles Online appears to use Visa Secure to screen any Visa cards being used on their website as a way to reduce their exposure to fraudulent transactions. Visa Secure will reject any Visa cards not supporting Visa Secure, which includes basically all prepaid Visa gift cards (e.g Category Choice gift cards, Vanilla Visa gift cards). A lot of websites use Visa Secure, so it is not unusual for Category Choice gift cards to be difficult to use online.1

      1. The Mastercard equivalent - Mastercard ID Check - is usually less restrictive when screening Mastercard cards, so prepaid Mastercard gift cards (e.g. Coles Mastercard gift cards, Vanilla Mastercard gift cards) will usually sneak through these checks.

  • (Today I Learned) The Category Choice card is limited to one device and cannot be shared across multiple phones.
And I missed this part, so I can’t buy any more cards 🥲:

The promotional code is single use and can only be redeemed once

    • +1

Yes I found out as well after the first purchase. If you have a partner or anyone you know ask them to buy for you.

  • Thanks got a $500 groceries gift card to use at Aldi, Asian groceries shop.

In my experience, I can only ever get two of these loaded to Apple Wallet and then I get errors. Google wallet there’s no issues saving 5+.

    • Thanks. does teh code give 10% discount. not working .error-The promotional code you entered is not valid.
