How convenient their Red Tail Sale ended last week, then they bring in the DSC/DP promotion once prices go back up

    • +6

Quite. Seriously, Qantas. Just offer the flights for free already.

    • +5

It’s almost like they have multiple types of promotion to encourage people to spend and they don’t want them to overlap. Inconceivable!

      • Not quite. When Qantas had their DSC/DP promotion in February this year, they had an overlapping fare sale. I know because I booked the popular NZ status run during the February promotion.

If you can snag a Business sale fare to Auckland or Christchurch, the Status Credit earn rate is much higher than domestic routes which is a option especially if you've got a trip coming up anyway.

You can often find reasonably-priced Qantas Business Class fares on trans-Tasman routes, earning 160 status credits each way. You can also add on a >domestic connection for little extra cost to earn even more status credits. For example, if you flew Brisbane-Melbourne-Christchurch or Gold Coast-Melbourne->Auckland, you would earn 280 status credits one-way.

  • is it more worth to opt for status credits or points?

    • +1

What's your end game? Do you fly a lot and need status benefits, or are you a twice a year flyer? Points can be easily and comparatively cheaply bought. Status credits are nearly always earned 'bum-in-seat' flying, thus harder (and pricier) to earn than points - but worth nothing if you can't leverage into status.

If you don't understand this, choose points.

    • Depends entirely on your flying activity and what you value.

But as a generalisation, if you aren't already familiar with how frequent flyer status works and what it takes to reach the levels above Bronze, then you're probably not in the market for bonus status credits.

    • Are you anywhere near or think you'll get 700 status credits for the year or 14,000 status credits over the lifetime?

    • As others stated it depends entirely on how much you fly. unless you are going to be getting 700+ status credits for the year or like me you are working towards your lifetime gold for 14000 status credits then status is worth nothing.

  • Hope Virgin does the same thing.

  • Travel dates until 31 August. My Gold resets at 1 September and I’ve already reached it so bad timing for me :(

    • Your gold resets at 1 Sept AEST, but if you travel in a time zone where 31 Aug local time is AFTER 1 Sept AEST, you should technically qualify.

  • Nothing is really decent from QF anymore, sales or promotion wise.

Cries in booked flights last night.

Free cancellation within 24 hours. But you will most likely pay more for the rebooked flight tickets

I feel this is a desperate attempt to counter all the negative sentiment from their flight and QFF benefit cuts. over the last 2 years I have gone from a loyal Qantas customer that collects status and points and am almost gold Lifetime to for the first time flying Virgin in Australia and looking at my next overseas holiday being with another carrier.

    • You fly with Qantas to get to lifetime gold. Virgin is like flying Jetstar. We really don’t have a choice. Once we get to gold, Just fly any other one world airline internationally.

      • Virgin is a step inbetween Jetstar and Qantas. hell you don't even get lounge access for Jetstar business seats anymore unless you pay for business max. I wish we had more competition locally, I still have over a million points to spend with Qantas (which is bloody hard with how shithouse it is to find reward seats that aren't classic plus these days) but I think I will focus on one of the international carriers miles programs for future earnings.

        • It’s easy to find seats man. Just utilise DSc and be platinum. Then you can ask to release seats for you. I don’t go around looking for seats these days. I just spend like 6k a year to get platinum and then use points to fly long haul to Europe and America every year.

          • @unhuman: I think I am done with DSC trips, it is just not worth it any more. maybe next year if we decide to go back to NZ, otherwise return on investment is just too low now.

            • @gromit: It’s worth it if you go on long haul. Nz trip can be done on economy. There’s no need to fly business or even pay with points for 700 dollars flight

              • @unhuman: I thought you were a DSC chaser? surely you realise NZ is one of the best ways to do DSC business.

                • @gromit: Bali from Sydney to brissy to Mel to Bali will net you 480 sc one way during DSc for 1500 aud. Nz does not even come close.

                  • @unhuman: Yeah but then you are in the shithole of bali. Wasted 1500 in my eyes.

                    • @gromit: Not when I can go to New York and London return on business every year. Bali trip is like 2 days trip lol. You just gotta know the trick

                      • @unhuman: Would much prefer to book somewhere like nz. Slightly less credits, less cost and you are somewhere you can actually enjoy a holuday

                        • @gromit: Man that’s 3 hours flight tho. I don’t mind flying economy for trips to nz

  • I am assuming Classic Reward flights are included?

    • +1

Yes, if you are a points club member, you can earn SC on classic reward flights.

  • so if my membership year is say 1/1 - 31/12……..and I attain gold in say Dec… does that mean I only get gold for one month and then it resets on 1/1 back to zero?

    • +1

You will have it for a minimum of 12 months. So in your case, it'd be 13 months. Having said that, the credits earned will reset and you'll need to reach the appropriate amount to keep it for the year after.

  • Surprised there’s promos despite what’s going on everywhere… guess it’s a good thing to continue as “business as usual”

  • So… I am about 20,000 points short of Points Club. I will reach Points Club in a months' time when I take a flight overseas.

If I book a Classic Rewards flight in August does anyone know if I will get points for that flight? Or do I need to be a Points Club member at the time of the booking?

    • Yes it's about what benefits you have at the time flying rather than booking

    • It would have been quicker and easier to read the Points Club webpage than ask here, but in any event the answer to your question is you will not earn Qantas Points on classic reward flights, with or without Points Club.

Points Club enables you to earn status credits on classic reward flights (at a lower rate than you would earn on normal paid fares).

Points Club and Points Club Plus members will earn Status Credits on Qantas Marketed Classic Flight Rewards and Classic Plus Flight Rewards if they are a Points Club or Points Club Plus member at the time they fly. Your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership number must be recorded in your booking before your flight departs to receive the Status Credits. See the Points Club Status Credit Table. for the Status Credit earn rate for Points Club and Points Club Plus members. Flight Rewards are subject to capacity controls, availability is limited, and some flights may not have any Flight Rewards available. Taxes, fees and carrier charges are payable to Qantas (excluding any amounts payable to third parties at the airport) in addition to the points required.

  • Most likely that their quarterly report numbers aren't looking good so they decided to do a last minute DSC promo to improve their numbers. Such a short travel period for it and inflated prices
