  • Wqs this the one that protects the paint a little that those mobile people apply and charge a few hundred for?

Any wax/ceramic protects the paint, it is adding a layer on top. None of them are magically superior, most work fine, just gets whats on sale, especially now with crazy prices on some stuff and way cheaper to do yourself.

Being consistent with regular maintenance in long run will trump anything else.

My understanding is that the "consumer grade" ceramics are nothing like the professional stuff. The professional stuff supposedly lasts years, while the consumer stuff is far less concentrated and has a different composition, lasting months only. From what I understand, the professional stuff can mess up your car if you get it wrong, which is why they don't put it in the hands of consumers. I have never paid for paint protection, but it's better than the stuff we get from the shop.

This product claims to be professional grade, but I'm not convinced. Personally I've been using Mother's CMX, which I've been happy with. A bottle lets me do about 4-5 coats, which are easy to apply and seem to last longer than wax. I do a double coat a week apart when applying to a car for the first time. It also works well on hard plastics. This particular post's product is for a half litre bottle, but without having used it I couldn't say if it's worth it.

I used to work at Ford as a new car detailer and applying professional ceramic coating was the most stressful part of the job specially in summer. If we left it for an extra minute than it was supposed to, it dries up and impossible to get it off without using a cutting compound.

        • Do you reckon it's worth the cost? Compared to just doing it yourself with consumer grade coating every 6 months or so?

          • +2

@Make it so: It gives you better scratch resistance, but in terms of protecting paint from contaminants and shine-wise, consumer grade is good as long as you do it frequently

@Make it so: The cost goes into the labour of paint correction to remove scratches and swirls before the professional ceramic coating can be applied. Otherwise, you end up locking in an ugly appearance instead of a shiny looking one.

        • Yup, that is what happened to my car when I DIY'd. However, I know have a good ugly coating of ceramic on my 22 year old car, which prevents the clear coat from peeling!

      • Not professional grade but lasted me more than 1 year. The expensive stuff can mess up your car bad. If you have specific tools u can still buff it out, but I never had the guts to try it.
Used this product and it lasted me a year. Would have lasted much more as I was looking after it with monthly wash with hybrid ceramic wash and wax car wash which renewed it. Really did noticed the protection come back after wash.
Note- my car is always garaged. This matters.

        • I use a car shampoo with ceramic from Mother's, but it hardly foams and I'm not sure how much dirt it removes. It does seem to keep the coat nicer.
But I thought you shouldn't put wax on ceramic?

          • @Make it so: Yeah I did recall seeing that. But both the products I use - meguiars and griots label read ceramic wax..no clue man. Found the thing that works that’s all I care about.

    • A lot of the cost is tied to labour which is directly dependent on the state of your paint. Often a used car will need chemical decontamination, cleaning with clay bar, and then cut/polish stages depending on your paint, surface prep to clean any previous compounds and then rhe coating stage. The better the surface prep, the better results can be had.

Coating life is dependent on the car usage, sometimes it can clog up from contaminants and it can be fixed with a decontamination wash.

      • Thanks! Also whats ur opinion on ppf

    Turtle wax any day.

  • I'm hoping some people can provide some insight as to whether this is any decent compared to some of the $150 products.

The truth is, not all ceramic coating are the same. Sometimes the more expensive ones can last years, and have better water repelling qualities, UV protection, etc. I say sometimes because not all expensive ceramic coatings are good. They might be amazing after coating, but can become ineffective after a few months, like a cheap one can. Cheap ones just have less SiO2 which is the main ingredient of ceramic coatings, expensive ones have more SiO2 concentration

Personally, I rate Gyeon highly myself

      • Which Gyeon product do you use? I'm keen to try a longer-lasting ceramic (Mother's CMX is not bad at all, but it doesn't last too long), as long as it's not something I can stuff up.

I used this product for a year. While I took it out after a year with clay, I kind of regret it/ didn’t have to.
Note-you need to use meguiars ultimate shampoo monthly on your car to renew the protection.
So basically apply once and the do monthly washes with the shampoo. Excellent protection from the elements and everyday use.

    • Is that the Meguiar's Ultimate Wash and Wax or am I looking at the wrong thing for the upkeep wash?

      • Hybrid ceramic wash and wax. Sorry I forget the name - had to re check.
Currently I am using griots ceramic wax and wash and ceramic coat. Griots better protection but meguiars have better shine. Griots also pricier - about double the price. So I will switch back again in a year and 1/2 to meguiars.

  • I used this and it is the worst ceramic sealant I have used. It was barely on the paint after 3 months, where Gyeon Cancoat lasts about a year.

  • The difference between the professional ceramic coating and prosumer is that the prosumer stuff comes in a bigger bottle and has a water base so easy to apply, the professional stuff in small bottles 30-50ml is different base and reacts with moisture in air to cure it. The prosumer stuff lasts about 6 mths supposedly, the professional stuff up to to 3 years supposedly , time will tell, but still needs a topper with hybrid as part of general car care if you want it to look pristine. The trick to the professional stuff was you need to have a very clean surface so it bonds to the paint, and it dries quicker so need to do small areas so no streaks and not on a hot day in sun so more working time. One of our cars 10 years old great clear coat we used the $150 tiny bottle on 6 mths ago after prepping the car, the other 5 year old car we did with prosumer $50 bottle, both bead water the same, time will tell how good the $150 stuff is. The prosumer stuff is so easy to apply , like the old spray waxes, I have no issues every 6 mths. Nothing hard about applying the $150 stuff if you have the time, I sure wouldn’t pay a detailer $900 for what it involves, both cars if it rains the existing dirt actually washes off if you drive while it rains, notice it as the prosumer cars is white. How often do people washe their cars , probabaly more than once every 6 months ?
