I have 2 of these, very reliable. Store my junk well. Might have to grab some more

    • +17

I use underwear to store my junk.

      • I thought you used a trunk like everyone else

        • keep it brief.

Looks like price matching Sydney Tools for similar shelving unit Daytona DSH1830 1830mm x 1820mm x 540mm 625kg 4 Tier Heavy Duty Shelving Unit - $179

    • Any idea if the Daytona is better quality than the Bunnings Pinnacle one? Looks similar.

      • I just put together one I bought a while ago from Aldi (79 bucks on clearance) and if these don't all come from the same factory I would be very surprised.

Relatively easy to put together, and the shelves sit in a recess in the supports so despite being ventilated metal it doesn't need anchors to stop it sliding around. As long as you don't plan on using it for very small items that aren't in containers should be fine for any other purpose

  • +1

i can comment on these also, very solid and practical units and this is a good price.. just be mindful the wire shelf has a lip so can be a bit fiddly if you sit boxes or tubs on them, they won't slide as easily as say an MDF shelf

    • +7

      Flip your wire mesh

    • +3

I agree the lip can be a little annoying (I think the commenter below you is misunderstanding and thinking you're talking about the mesh instead of the cross bar), but it's well worth putting up with that annoyance instead of having the MDF which will inevitably grow mouldy and/or disintegrate over a couple of years. Never going back to that garbage. Wire shelves FTW

      • As someone with 5 MDF shelving units with some starting to go moldy, any good replacement shelf ideas?

        • +1

I had similar, replaced the MDF with tongue in groove particle flooring - not worth the effort :)

          • +5

@weezlebub: You need to paint them, ours are painted and it's been 35 years and counting

        • Free used marine ply from a nearby construction skip. Just wipe the concrete crumbs off

        • Mine aren't mouldy just a little warpy. I actually contacted the manufacturer and asked if I could purchase their wire shelves alone. That was a big no. Have to buy the whole unit. I might fly over to China and ask the production manager personally.

        • I used stuff like this. You'll need to get [hire?] the appropriate cutting tool, or I guess maybe a masonry disc on a grinder, but do it outdoors. And wear a mask.

          It's worked well.

          https://www.bunnings.com.au/durasheet-1800-x-1200-x-4-5mm-fi…

        • Replaced mine with some fairly thick plywood.

  • +4

I have 4 of these. Awesome shelves to organise the garage.

Note the box is really heavy when you pick it up. Grab a store member or friend

    • I pulled a neck muscle the first time I took one off the roof racks myself. Don't think I will be doing that any more. If you can get it on a movers trolley it's not too bad

      • Shit hope you're alright. The hard part is how wide and long it is. Hard to get a good and safe grip on the weight

        • +1

Couldn't move my head one way for a week but I still had to get the other two off the roof myself so had to bat through the innings. I am fine now but yes wasn't expecting them to be anywhere near as heavy as they are, if you do plan on moving them by yourself make sure you are using something to help you, picking them up on their own is not that smart

    • +1

If I get these delivered, would I need two people for assembly? My partner might be able to help with a light shelf but not much more.

      • +3

Not really - its pretty easy to assemble.

        • +4

Yep - it's an easy enough one man job.

But grab yourself a $10 mallet for whacking in the shelves. Much easy at forcing them into their mounting grooves with a tool rather than a fist…

          • @UncleRico: A block of timber also does the job and doesn’t risk damaging the coating or denting the shelf rails as much.

            • @tastybaklava: Yeah, it sounds like the new versions have considerably thinner, more susceptible powder coating.

Luckily, I have the original edition and a rubber headed mallet certainy didn't endanger any of my rails any more or less than a block of timber would have. That said, I suspect your block of timber likely saved you $10 compared to a mallet, so you may well be onto something.

      • It's easier with two as you need to line up sides but I've done it by myself with a rubber mallet (recommended)

  • Any ideas if the 5 tier ($198) is as good and/or better value?

    • +1

They are all the same mate, just buy the one that suits you. If you need to atore large boxes or you don't mind having multiple small boxes on the shelf to shift around, buy the cheaper one. If you want to lay things out like it was a table the extra shelf will help

    • How much do you value an extra shelf and 26cm of extra height? Otherwise, it will be identical. So really up to you…

    • +3

Twenty bucks very well spent so long as you can fit them.

The extra height and extra shelf increase your storage capacity substantially.

As the owner of the 4 shelf version and 5 shelf version, plus too many of the cheaper, shallower Montgomery shelving racks from Bunnings - any time you can maximise the storage capacity in a similar footprint, grab it.

To that end, the pick of all my shelving is the Skytech, whose ebay store frequenetly participate's in the promo code promotions offering up to 20%. There's plenty of similar companies doing rack shelving - typically available in various heights and widths, but the main benefit is the 600mm deep shelving. Game changer for storing archive boxes, storage bins, christmas trees etc. www.ebay.com.au/str/skyteckonline

You’ve mentioned these in the past I think and I’m very keen to get these for my new garage. I have high ceilings so the additional height is very desirable.

If I buy one set, can I buy a second set later to extend with?

frequenetly participate's in the promo code promotions offering up to 20%

Good to know, I wonder what regional postage is like?

        • +1

Yeah - my garage is testimony to my serial rack shelfaholic affliction and I’ve posted about them in other threads after similarly leaning of them from other OzBargainers. They’re modular and can be configured in many different ways, so you can certainly buy and add more in multiple stages.

I started off with 4m wide x 2.4m high and then added a further 1.5m wide by 2.0m high to fit under a roller door and maximise the space. They come with four shelves each as standard, but you can get extras which I recommend as many items are considerably shorter than the average 60cm+ per adjustable shelf. And unlike the wire mesh shelves, the flat shelves of the metal rack shelving units allow you to push and store items across multiple units since they all sit flush.

Postage is expensive since they’re big and weigh a ton. Value proposition really only stacks up if you can pick them up from a nearby location.

          • @UncleRico: They don't seem to have extra beams/shelves available on their website, only sets of screws

      • The problem is most of the skyteck ones are capped at 200kg per shelf, not 500 like these.

        • Are you really planning on putting more than 10 bags of cement on each shelf?
I highly doubt these pinnacle ones could actually cope with more than that.
Skyteck looks more heavy duty than pinnacle to me.

    • I've got two1830x1820x540mm shelves (the one in this deal) and one 2090x540x1820mm shelf (the one you linked but only 4 tiers) and the 2090mm height shelf appears to be made of slightly thicker material, feels sturdier and is more square. The 1830mm height shelves I more recently were both a little crooked with no weight on them although they seem to be reasonably stable once they had some load on them.

  • Edit - Just did CC anyway.

How long do Bunnings specials last? Was going to grab another of these on the weekend but will click and collect if they dont last long.

  • +1

Ahh these are great - rock solid and plenty big enough. I have been waiting for a special to get another one.

  • +1

Gonna be a challenge to fit into my average SUV and $100 delivery :/
Ordered 2 and let's see what happens.

    • Should be able to get free trailer hire. As long as you have a tow bar obviously.

  • +6

There is a LOT of recent complaints on the Bunnings reviews that the manufacturer has changed the powder coating on them in the last year making them very susceptible to scratching and denting. Looking at the photos in the reviews that definitely seems to be the case, looks far inferior now.

Eg photo from one of the reviews:
    https://photos-eu.bazaarvoice.com/photo/2/cGhvdG86YnVubmluZ3…

    • +1

Damn I would not buy the new one after seeing that! The original was so superior. Looked so good even after 3 years

    • +2

i wonder if the " Daytona DSH1830 1830mm x 1820mm x 540mm 625kg 4 Tier Heavy Duty Shelving Unit - $179(sydneytools.com.au)" linked above has the better quality as the OG pinnacle. Shipping from sydneytools however is outrageous, which kills the deal (BNE - SEQ) Shipping $366.36 Surcharge $88.00 (Tailgate Service) TOTAL $633.36.

    • +1

Which is the newest version of those two side by side?

      • +1

The new version would be on the right.
Mine are about 10yrs old and look like the left one with the hammered finish.

      • +1

I believe it's the thicker and more coarse looking Powdercoating on the Left. In fact that's the ones that are on display in some Bunnings so its kinda dodgy that they display those and then you end up with the others because the manufacturer decided to probably cut costs

    • Which one is the old and better version? Left or Right

    • thanks for the heads up. might just look for a one on marketplace.

  • Ordered one for cc. Thanks op!

  • How do these compare to the generic black powder coated shelving that's all over facebook marketplace?

  • Thanks OP. Any outdoor suggestions guys?

  • +1

    Does anyone know if the 1830 x 1500 x 540mm size has ever gone on sale? Apartment's storage cage won't fit 1830 x 1820 x 540mm :(

  • ty. got 1.

  • Thanks OP

  • Does anyone have the Giantz (or the other similar wholesaler shelf’s that look similar)? Can pick up shelving that looks very similar to this one through Kmart Marketplace from a local wholesaler and curious how they are!

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/giantz-2mx2m-warehouse-shel…?

    • Those ones look okay, more like traditional rack shelving but most of the thin sheet metal Giantz units you see are rubbish.

Giantz are bottom of the barrel with wafer-thin metal and flimsy as all buggary compared to these. Many of their units only have 30 or 40cm deep shelves compared to these 54cm, making them considerably less useful and realising much reduced storage space.

    • I do. I got it first, then got some pinnacle/montgomery wire shelving, which I prefer

They work alright, but have a lower load rating and it needs to be balanced. It's a solid metal sheet so things slide on it which is nice, but if you try and put something heavy with pokely bits like car parts it will scratch the paint off and dint it because its only about as thick as the steel shell of a dryer.

The 2090 high version at $198 is the better buy. The extra shelf and extra height. I have the 4 shelf version at 1830 high and sitting next to the one 5 shelf version (because of price and being on sale) and wish they were all the higher version with the extra shelf. All the smaller stuff would go on the smaller height shelf on the 5 version.
Basically, for extra $20 get the 5 shelf version

    • ^^^ This guy knows. ^^^

    • +2

the 5 shelf 2090 high version is now $279 :(

Bunnings used to do an end piece peg board for the end of these shelving units which had been discontinued and no longer stocked. They were handy for end storage and also hanging things on the end
I should have bought some of them when they were in stock and a regular item

    • There are plenty of spare holes left on the uprights once you’ve put in the shelves at the desired height, so one way to add some additional storage to hang things like bike helmets is to put in some cheap stainless steel S hooks. Bunnings has plenty.

    • I recently got the wooden pegboard (https://www.bunnings.com.au/customwood-5-5-x-1800-x-1200mm-b…) to go on the end, cut down to 1800x540. Bunnings were able to do the cut for me on their big saw. Half the price of the metal one and leaves a similar size piece left over for use elsewhere e.g. on another shelf.

The metal pegboard might attach nicer but this one wasn't too bad, there small wooden blocks on each corner at the top/middle/bottom with screws through the holes, and pegboard screwed onto it. There's a small gap from the floor to the bottom as it's only 1800, but since everything hangs from the pegboard this seems like a non-issue.

For hooks the zenith and everhang ones have worked, but the quality control is pretty average. Be prepared for a decent portion of them to need the holes widened a little, accepting a not quite flush fit (I hung heavier items on these) or taking some back for another lucky dip exchange. No experience with hooks designed for the metal boards, those look about 1mm thick so I don't imagine they'd work too well here.

Does anyone even check the recent reviews on these…oh dear.

I learned the hard way that I got what I paid for with cheaper shed shelves with MDF. I think I can relate to every comment on here - and thanks everyone for the comments answering every possible question I might have had.

  • I had two of these 3 years ago on clearance, for $75 each (inflation!). They are very good, strong and holding up well to the dirt and humidity in my old shed.

  • A UDL of 600kg per shelf seems highly inflated. Could this really hold 2.4 tonnes total?

    • I reckon its 600kg total over the whole unit.
No way would these take 600kg per shelf

  • Anyone tried putting castors on these? Just something to make it easy to move them for cleaning, rearranging once in a blue moon, or easier retrieval of the inevitable thing falling between the back and the wall. If anyone's got experience here would love to hear it.

Ones rated for 600kg each to match the 4x600kg shelves look to cost almost as much as the shelves themselves. But for mine, I doubt the entire shelf rack has more than a few hundred kg on it, so I'm hoping to get away for a more reasonable price

    • I wouldn't trust rolling these around anywhere with stuff on them. The metal will bend to easily. They are fine for forces straight from above, but angles will buckle them.

  • I literally bought a couple of these at full price a few of days ago, what are my chances of getting the difference refunded with just taking the receipt back without the items?
I've already put one together, and the other is still in the box but too heavy to haul back to bunnings.

    • You're in a bind if lugging them around is problematic, else you could just buy again and discount price and return them using your more expensive receipt…

  • The Rackit units, also from bunnings, will give more options with add ons and parts. I have the pinnacle and wanted an additional shelf and you can’t buy one.

The wire shelf can be painful so I cut some MDF to get the best of both worlds. You definitely don’t want the cheap MDF only shelves. The strength is in the wire shelf

  • I'm not sure what the fuss is about with these.
There's cheaper/better ones available all over FB marketplace/ebay etc such as these: https://www.plusoutdoors.com.au/2m-shelving-2m-x-0-6m-x-1-8m…

    • -1

Temu has them for cheaper I think but not sure if the quality

    • Yeah, but delivery costs almost as much as the shelves.

  • $21 more for an extra shelf
