Say it with me "should be under 1k"..

      • +5

we are lucky Apple hasn't increased prices yet in Australia due to inflation

Aussie dollar is the highest it's been against the USD in two years, might be helping on that one.

      • -2

certainly the most innovative iPhone since iPhone X

This is what people are ignoring. The Air is the first time we have gotten anything as gorgeous since the departure of Jony Ive.

        • yep, the beauty of Apple is … being different :)

          • @webtherapist: Less features IS MORE $$$ ;) big difference in your pocket ;)

        • One camera, one speaker and mediocre battery life are the tradeoffs for thinness only? Nothing innovative here :)

    • +1

      should be under 1k

    • What's the resale value of discontinued (Dead) iPhones? ;)

  • +3

Need stack 10% off GC and TRS refund

Apple must be hardly moving these units compared to the regular 17s. I literally just bought an iPhone 17 yesterday for around the same price - no regrets as I think the 17 is actually the better phone compared to the air.

    • +2

Yep heard many of that, 17 is the best bang

      • why best bang ? other than orange colour ?

        • Isn’t orange 17 pro?

        • +1

Orange is exclusive to the Pro and Pro Max. At launch, the 17 was considered best value since it's the first time a base model has 120hz, a feature previously exclusive to Pros. Now with the frequent Air sales, it's up to you which you consider the best value as there's tradeoffs both ways.

      • IP 17 was the best bang since the Air was priced $400+ higher. But for the same price? It boils down to how much one value the 2 cams and stereo speakers on the standard IP 17. Everything else the Air is better, including battery life.

        • +3

          Battery life no way

          • +2

@JoeOz: That's where most people who hasn't used the Air got it wrong. Its battery efficiency is insane, I used both IP 17 and Air. On office day with limited/no wifi, the Air last noticeably longer. On days where I was on wifi 100%, both last roughly the same.

            • +1

@Kingduytan: I used iphone air and my wife use base 17, and I agree with you iPhone air has better battery life(not by much though). Probably because better chipset and Apple cellular modem.

And yes, people keep mocking iPhone Air, but to me its because of the pricing. If its priced the same as iPhone 17, then both are equally good. iPhone air has better chipset, titanium build, larger screen, and lighter weight. Its a trade-off that people have to choose.

              • @yummypinacolada: iphone 17 is $1399 on jb. that bro bought 17 more expensive, came here to say he paid "the same" and had to remind himself that "he made the right choice" lol air had +$400 rrp for a reason

    • air is better with pro chip, bigger screen, premium rim and thinner. but do mental gymnastics to tell yourself at least you have better battery (not true) and audio :)

      • +6

Alright, let’s unpack my 'mental gymnastics' (of which, I did very little, if any):

On the battery front - the 17’s extra few mm's are mostly just more battery gel, so in terms of my real‑ world use (i.e. what I use it for, including maps, photos, tethering and proper 5G for download large files) certainly leans its way.
On the audio front - the 17’s bigger chassis means bigger and better speaker vents and a bit more depth and volume. I have heard the Air's mono speaker and it genuinely, objectively sounded horrible and tinny compared to proper stereo speakers like that of the iphone 17.

        So, mentally:

You traded a few millimetres and a barely noticeable pro chip boost for:
        * more cameras;
        * more usable battery; and
        * a body that actually survives daily life

Thereby, gaining tangible and measurable versatility while paying extra for something that’s thinner, frailer, and objectively worse in key areas. If that’s considered 'mental gymnastics', then fine lol.

Imagine being that butthurt over somebody else's purchasing decision.

        • -1

listening to apple fanboys fight is as good as listening to tesla fanboys fight

          • +1

@botchie: Not a fanboy by any stretch. Just trying to walk through my “mental gymnastics” for the benefit of one very concerned citizen.

        • +1

Air is thinner, yes, but it's far from frailer. IP 17 is thicker, but Aluminum is more susceptible to be bent. Look up endurance test, the Air is more durable than IP 17.
Battery is mostly comparable, but if you use 4G/5G heavily especially hotspot, Air last longer.

So the buying decisions comes down to
          Buy IP 17 for
          * 2 cams
          * Stereo speakers
          * Smaller screen so may suit people with smaller hands or pockets

          Buy IP Air for
          * Larger screen
          * Lighter and nicer balance in hand
          * 12GB RAM

The pro chip on the Air is a nice bonus, but probably not impactful in such a thin body with limited cooling capacity.

        • +1

By all accounts Air is more durable than the rest of the 17 range.

    • +2

I prefer the 12GB ram in this

  • When is the best time to buy apple's flagship phone? I.e. when does it usually get discounted the most etc

    • +3

Depends. Best time would be launch day, so you get thw latest phone for the full cycle of the phone being the latest.

      • for me best is when new model hit the store, rich people are upgrading, and then i get to buy their 2nd hand (relatively) cheap

        • There's a lot of iphone 16 pros on ebay for around $1100 (or even $1k with a coupon) but I've read far too many horror stories about switched out batteries. I can't justify $1k more to get the 17pro though.

    • +1

Buy last years top model. You'll still get near identical specs as the current and iPhones keep getting updates for well over 5+ years.. Get a battery swap mid way by Apple direct and you're sorted for a long time.

I say this as someone who cannot fathom using iOS daily, though. Just way too many frustrations.. Just wish android had a true direct hardware competitor. Samsung's UI and bloatware blah. And I shouldn't have to custom rom a brand new device.

(nexus/pixel owner for years but mannnn google gotta fix the hardware and battery issues)

      • Great post.

      • +2

Where can you buy last year's Pro / Pro Max brand new? All major retailers stop selling them right after the new one drops unlike the older base models.

        • They may stop stocking them with new deliveries but they don't just disappear overnight. Meaning they'll have leftover stock, often aligning with some (usually mild because Apple) sales.

          • @ReaperX22: I was wondering about this too. Until a few days ago Harvey Norman had the 16 Pro Max listed, but did not seem to have any stock.

Everything else in Google Shopping seems to be pre-owned.

      • +1

Tell me about it. Every generation of Pixel/Nexus I've had has had hardware issues. Cameras dying early, CPU glitching & overheating and now modem issues in my Pixel 6.

Apparently need to go Pixel 9/10 to get newer 5400 but goddamn I'm just so annoyed. Looking at iPhone 15 or so now second hand to ensure get USB-C

Its under $1100 on Vodaphone - over 36 months so interest free pretty much + plan or you can cancel and pay out the phone

Anorexic iPhone for over 1k - lol

The 13 mini is where it was at

    • +2

I went from 12 mini to 16 pro to an Air.

Loved the minis form factor, but camera was getting dated.

Loved the Pros Camera and Larger crisper AOD screen, but it was heavy af.

Air is the lightest thing ever, but need to get used to the single camera, and its FAT, compared to the standard. No issues what so ever with the battery, fitness tracking bluetooth majority of the day etc.

I still miss the minis form factor, but the air is like the middle of the pro and mini, as honestly its so light I forget its in my pocket.

Dear Mr Ternus, please give me an Iphone Mini Air Pro, dont care for battery as its so easy to have a portable these days.

      • Dear Mr Ternus, please give me an iPhone Mini Air Pro, dont care for battery as its so easy to have a portable these days.

        Amen Amen

      • +2

I keep my 13 mini. The longest I did not upgrade.

Thought about going to the Air but the size is just too big. I remember the old times where everyone tried to get the smallest phone.
Mini is still the best form factor - but getting a bit dated. I will replace the battery and hope to get two/three more years out of it.

        • +1

So sad that the mini size was abandoned by all the main players

Asus Zenfone came closest for Android but kept having hardware issues

Not sure there's any left on Android or iPhone

    • +1

Still running my 13 mini, keeping it on iOS 18 as I've heard 26 slows it down too much.
Until there's a suitable replacement I'm not getting rid of it.

      • Running a 13mini as well - updated it to iOS 26 and it’s snappy as ever.

Battery is 90% considering it’s close to 4 yrs old now too

        • Man I hear such inconsistent things from people!
Heaps on reddit or even here saying ios 26 massively slowed down their phone and reduced battery life. Mine is on 94% battery health, had it replaced about a year ago. Also from my perspective there isn't really an incentive to upgrade to 26, don't care about the design and as far as I know there's no killer feature so from my perspective its jus risk to downgrade my user experience.

          Anything I'm not considering?

          • +1

@LanceVance: You’re not missing anything really form the non-upgrade.

Only worry would be for how long the security updates would last on iOS 18.

  • this or iPhone 16 pro max

    • +3

      This or a PS5 Pro?

    • -1

coming from 16 pro max I like this one better for quality build, design (thin and light). when the fold comes will switch to that, for now I feel like the wow from iPhone 4S and iPhone X in this 😆

    • -2

iPhone 16 pro max just for the titanium

      • +3

Air is the only one with titanium in 17 series, holding an aluminium phone is like a downgrade 😅

        • +1

agree, and it feels even more premium when its at its thinest vs a Iphone 16 Pros titanium .

    • Yes, but in reality if you use gift cards buying outright can be slightly cheaper, or anyway less hassle as no need for a mobile number or to cancel.

  • its been this price for a while now

  • HOLD!!

  • anyone had any luck getting this deal price matched at an Apple Store? It seems to be a large gap from their usual 10% unofficial matching policy

    • I would more likely get one if it were available at that price at the apple store
